My wife and I have owned a 2000 Chevy Impala since 2002. We have also experienced the high/low beam switch problems since about 100,000 miles.(the car now has 160,000 miles) I have to hold the dimmer switch back when I need the high beams. After reading many responses to this same problem, I seem to like the approach Stephen of Canada used. He put some epoxy resin on the end of the plastic plunger that was worn down. Has anyone else tried that method? Looking for some input here.

I have a problem on my 05 Impala. My daytime running lights work but when it gets dark they my headlights turn off or when I pull the headlight knob on the dash so at night I need to drive with my high beams on that switch is on the left side of the steering with the cruise on off switch & wipers. I've heard dimmer switch or headlight control module. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Go to DOT.gov and file a complaint. Takes about 10 minutes.

mine is a different problem. the switch is good but the high beams would randomly shut off. i would kick back to low beams and then back to high and they would work fine again for a long time before they went out again. now the low beams wouldnt come on for a while then pop on. now they wont come on at all. but kicking to high beams works well. i am going to try the dimmer relay for a solution to the problem. if it works its about a 16 dollar fix. will keep everyone posted on the results.

I have a 2002 Impala and for the past few months my switch would not stay to turn on the brights. When I did get it too work (like now) the brights are stuck on! I don't have the cash to get it fixed so just wanted to know if this is a recall yet?

it could be that sensor that control when your lights come on at night, which would be the headlight control module

All lights work but headlights do not go bright to dimm. The light on dash shows it does but they don't

It took a Newfie to come up with a sensible idea to solve a problem..he's a member of the society that once fixed a car with hay wire..a nylon stocking (when a pulley broke). And a pair of pliers. I took his idea to my mechanic and asked him to direct wire my high beams to a switch on my dash. Cost labor installed $ 50.00 works well. The rest of the car runs fine. I use it only at my Summer cottage.

I've had the dimmer switch problem on my 2002 Impala where I couldn't switch between high beam and low beam. After reading all the complaints about the dimmer switch issue, I decided to not replace it, and instead, one quick trip to a local mechanic fixed the problem permanently.
I had a local mechanic cut the high beam headlight wires near the headlights, run them through a relay, and then to an old style floor switch in the cab of my car.
Now, my high beams operate independently of my low beams (meaning I can turn all four headlights on at once for better visibility) and I won't have to worry about a little piece of plastic breaking and losing my headlights while driving. Even if my low beams happen to go out, I can flip on my high beams.
