Yes our 01 Impala has a "floating needle" problem - never know what's really in the tank. We have to depend on the odometer.

Mike...this happened to me...and I called my mechanic who indicated that this whole thing is going to cost me @$400 to fix. I'm done. Would you please let me know a 'fix' for this. You can reach me at [email protected] Thanks.

Hey I have a pretty cheap fix for that, actually its free if you have some tools! I found mine was doing the same, and if you let it go it will eventually stop working. Go here: http://impalahq.naioa.com/HowTo/GasTankSender...

They have the procedure to take them out, however the easy and free fix part of it is once you have it out you will see the sending unit-its a little (generally black piece), with 3 brushes, that touch an arched panel. It will look dark. All you have to do is take a Q-tip or some other small thing to clean off that arch of metal. It should shine right up. Be sure you don't bend the three brushes. Once clean replace, and your problem should be fixed. It worked for me, I have a 2000 impala and I had this same problem and rather than dropping the money on a new sender I decided to clean it and see what happened, and now it works. Even if it doesn't fix your problem at least you tried for free! Hope this helps.

You might have to go into the gages and re adjust the needle. If you do it make sure you have a full tank, or run it out of gas completely and you should be able to re adjust the needle by just moving it in there!

Hey Mike;
My wifes car does the same thing; 2000 impala, she took it to the shop and they fropped the tank and said the connector was loose. The re-connected it and said it was fixed. They also said that if it did not work that they would have to replace the pump which would be $600. Please help with this problem.

My 01 impala has the jumping needle. Its a pain. It just started doing it when the gas is low. I am wondering if it is going to get worse?

If the cleaning the brush does not work the only way to do it is replace the PUMP... I had a 00 pontiac montana, i cleaned it and it did not work. so i tried the sending unit, it did not work. The only option was to replace a $360 pump. I found out that the wires inside the original GM pump actually melt (read this on some GM tech articles) THey said only fix to was replacement. SO if you clean this and it does not work, dont waste the 30 for the sending unit, just get the pump its the only option. And anyone can do it...

The fuel gauge in my 2000 chevy impala stays on full unless the car is sitting idle or I am about to run out of gas. Do you think I need a new fuel pump
