I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem. Sometimes while turning I can hear a strange whining noise coming from under the dash. Is not power steering or anything like that. Sounds like rubber rubbing on metal.

Also sometimes transmission shifts hard, every gear. After I turn it off and it sits for a few minutes, it's fine again. Only done it twice, heard there is a pressure solinoid that causes this?

I had the same problem on my 2002 impala. It was the power steering fluid was low/empty. Check that.

I had a whining noise on my Malibu. There was a vaccum leak and the dealer replaced a hose.

Nope. All is well. Very strange problems. Car only has 48,000 on it. Just sounds like something rubbing only when turning the wheel. Guess I will have to pul the dash panel out to find it.

I had rubbing noises on my Impala when the steering wheel was being turned. The car was in warranty so I took it to the Chevy dealer. There was a sound like rubber rubbing against metal. the dealer replaced the rack and pinion unit because it had a part that broke and all the lubricant leaked out. Three weeks later on a new rack and pinion steering shaft, the noise returned and I heard a noise coming from the dash area which sounded like metal rubbing against metal when I steered to the left. I returned to the dealer because I observed the steering lubricant had leaked out of a new shaft when I looked under the car. The dealer found cracks on the bolt on subframe which is bolted on the car frame under the car near the dash area. Look there too because there are rubber boots on the bolt on sub frame where the bolts are.

The cracks on the welds on the subframe was causing the steering shafts to break, the fluid to leak out, and then that is when you hear rubber rubbing against metal while steering. My dealer had GM replace the sub-frame free of charge when they told me the extended warranty from GM would not cover it. My dealer went after GM and told them there was a manufacturing defect which they were liable to fix. The sub frame also carries the steering shaft and the engine as well. My dealer also informed me they have had the same problem with a few other Impalas as well. I was informed the problem also made the engine shift while you were driving due to a cracked sub frame support.

In the end, I ended up getting the sub frame fixed free of charge, and a new rack and pinion steering shaft as well. Welds if done properly should not break and crack.

I also have another Impala and that car does not have any problems with the steering shaft or sub frame.

I have an 04 SS that has recently started making the same noise. It started doing it occasionally, but now it happens every time I make a turn. I would normally think its a low powersteering fluid level, but with a sealed unit.I'm not sure. Did you ever track your problem?

I have an 04SS and it whins when i turn corners pretty badly - it does sound like a power steering fluid thing but its not that because i had someone check my fluid and they said it was fine. Ill be bringing it to the garage soon im sure, and ill let you guys know what my problem was.
