How to check/add transmission fluid for 03 Chevy Impala

Does anyone know how to add transmission fluid to the 03 Chevy Impala? Also, beginning 2 days ago I started experiencing an intermittent mechanical failure where my Impala does not move forward/backward when in drive/reverse, but the engine seems to be running fine when this failure occurs because if I accelerate to try to move the car, the engine sounds and feels like it is revving up the same as usual but no movement occurs- my car seems like it is stuck in park or neutral. It was really crazy yesterday. I did notice that my oil was low so I added more which seemed to improve the condition long enough for me to make it home, which takes me about 25 mins but the drive is all highway, so my average speed of the drive is above 55 mph. I also noticed how the problem occurs mostly when I am stopped at a light or something like that, if I am going uphill at low rate of speed, and when my speed dips below I say around 25 mph. I thought that I should check/add transmission fluid, and possibly add an additive but I cannot locate where the transmission fluid goes. Please advise. My email is kc10282006@yahoo.com, Thanks.

The trans dip stick is close to the fire wall between engine and firewall. It has a red (red trans fluid)loop handle. The engine should be warm and running in park when checking the fluid level. Very hard to tell the level if the fluid is clean. The hatched area on dipstick measures one pint. Do not overfill and do not use the wrong Dexron type fluid. The dipstick has an imprint on what type trans fluid to use. If you do not know what you are doing take the car to a service garage and ask for a road test, code scan, and mechanics opinion and estimate for repair. A temporary repair would be a trans service changing the trans filter. A flush would probably not help as the old filter would still be inplace.

If your trans has no 4th gear in D then quite possibly metal particles have circulated thru the trans hydraulic system causing your trans filter to plug up. When the filter is plugged delayed reaction and poor shifting occurs. The trans pan underneith the car has 20 bolts that need to be removed. Trans fluid will spill from the pan and a large drain pan is required to catch the spill. Be careful not to damage the gasket as it is reuseable and very expensive to replace. Next examine the trans pan for debris. Mine had dull silver metal particles clustered around the magnet. My 4th clutch hub and shaft splines were eaten away because the shaft end splines were not hardened by a heat treatment process by vendor. My milage went down to about 20 MPG average as compared to 25 MPG before the failure. Mine failed at 80,000 miles. You have a 4T65E THM trans. If you take it to an automatic trans place they will charge about $2000 to overhaul it. If you change the trans screen, clean out the pan, reuse the gasket, and add about 7.5 quarts of new trans fluid you will be able to drive your car with less fuel efficency till you can afford to overhaul the trans. Supposedly the splines were heat treated in 2003 models and newer.

You could have other problems. A trans service is recommended by me.

Good luck
