I have a clunk noise in the front end, so far the dealer said they don't know what's wrong. Does anyone else have this problem. I'm gonna get it looked at a couple of more times then I'm tking it up with the lemon law associates.

I had a clunk in the front of mine, but I added a CGS exhaust and it had loosened up a bit and was hitting the hood strut. If problem persists, you might check out chevyhhr.net, a forum with over 1700 HHR members and see if anyone has had a similar problem.

If you have the electronique power steering then it might be your rack and pinion, it make loose like noise in front end and give very small jerks in steering wheel on rocky roads. Check that out!

I have a 2005 chevy silverado and when pulling out of the drive or going over little street bumps I consantly here a rattle like something loose, like a shock or something in the suspension. Does anyone else have this condition? If so what did the dealer fix on it? My truck just went out of warranty.

Gary, I have an '02 2500HD Duramax that has had the infamous front end clunk since I owned it. I wish I had taken it to the dealer ASAP instead of waiting until year two of my warranty. Long story short--I ran out of warranty but the fact that I had brought it to the dealer no less than six times for repair that they are still covering it out of warranty as they should. It should be a recall item. Maybe I should say it again louder. IT SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM!!! I had the intermediate steering shaft repacked with grease several times now as well as 3 replacements. The latest repack was only a monthago and guess what? Yes, it is already clunking again. I will NOT buy a Chevy again until they fix the engineering design of that piece of crap. |

the clicking/clunking in my 2004 siverado is when i'm making tight turns. I've had it looked at and they said nothing was wrong and that it might be the tires rubbing?? I've heard other chevys doing it. But i'm sure as hell not taking it to chevy so they can 'find' something wrong and charge me alot of $$.
anyone else's clunk while turning? |

I have a 2005 z71 crewcab and I have the same clunking noise in the front end. I can feel the vibration/clunk in the steering wheel when I turn right a low speed on bumpy roads.
I also have a noise between 60 and 65 in the front end. It is a harmonic sound and will only make the sound at this speed. I had the tires replaced but it didnt fix the problem. Help! |

Jason- You're not alone. My 2004 Silverado 2500HD had "the cluck" from day 1. It took me several gripe sessions with Hamm Chevrolet to finally agree there WAS a clunk, and then to fess up and fix it. Some lube kit. Long story...lube doesn't last forever. It's been a year, and the thunk is back. I'm headed back to raise a little hell and demand they "maintain" this annoyance for me as long as I have the truck. Google "chevy intermediate steering column" and you'll find zillions of others. |

Jason, I had both front wheel bearings go out on a 2004 Duramax with only 50,000 miles. I had told the dealer that I had a noise going on in the front end. It took out both brakes and cost me $2,500 The company that the chev dealer uses does not want to cover it. I may have to sue the ---------- |

Check the wheel bearings. Both of mine went out at only 50,000 on a HD Duramax. Unreal for a $49,000 dollar truck. They don't want to cover it on the insurance. It also took out both front brakes due to the wobble. What a piece of ----! |

I have a 2001 Cadillac Deville, and had that same clunk noise problem. I took it to the dealer, they didn't know what the problem was, I took it to MIDAS brakes, where my brakes were purchased, they didn't know what the problem was, finally I started to listen very closely to when the "clunk" sound was made.I noticed that it was only made when I lightly tapped the brake in the midst of a platform incline or decline. Even though MIDAS insisted that it wasn't the brakes, I was convinced that it was, so I took it bak to them and told the manager. The he said " Ok, we'll take the brakes down, but we won't find anything, because it isn't the brakes", he said that it wold be a 6hr job, to totally rebuild the front brake system. Thank god 3hrs later they found the problem. The mysterious clunking noise, coming from my front end only, was something as simple as lubricating the front Caliper slides. Who ever would have thought. I had been to that my well maintained car need everything from suspention parts, to rotors, to brakes, just to correct that sound. Keep searching and worrying the hell out of everyone who has ever done work on your car and the problem will be found. I hope that your vehicle is under factory or extended warranty as mine is, good luck. |

My 2006 Silverado 1500 has the clunk! It started at about 20,000 miles.I notice it on small bumps in the road and on turns. Appling the brakes makes no difference. It's an annoying clunk that you hear and can feel in the steering wheel.I got underneath and suprizingly tightened almost every bolt in the front end .This made no difference!I'm headed back to the dealer with copies of these comments...I see why GM is losing sales to the imports!!

I hear a clunking noise on the right front end at speed of 100 to 105 mph, slow down below 100 mph it goes away, dealer says they can't duplicate the problem, it can be tested up to the speed limit 65 mph. |

Like almost everyone, my 05 HD has the infamous "clunk". The dealer explained that GM is working with the component supplier but that so far, no recall is imminent. They did say, expect to be notified within the next 30-60 days that a permenant fix has been designed and that owners will be notified by letter that the truck can be brought in. I am a staunch GM buyer but this kind of thing is really making me think about other brands next time.

Just to add my comment on the clunk sound and feel, i have the same problem as the rest of you on this site,it is very annoying, mine is about to go in shop,i hope by now someone has come up with a permanent fix for this, truck only has 29,000 miles and is a 2004,happens when turning ,over very little bumps

Sicpuppy is right; this is what fixed my steering noise. I have a 2004 Z71 I got it brand new it has 43600 miles on it now. I have had that intermediate shaft fixed twice, last week the Toc converter went out and they had to also fix another bracket that broke (don’t remember what is was but it stopped the noise in the rear end when I stopped and hit the gas. My newest problems this week is the speedometer-stopped working they have to replace the whole instrument cluster. This morning was cold so I go to turn on my heated seats and go figure it does not work… My truck is the biggest pieces of crap… I am getting rid of it this weekend after it is fixed. I will not be buying another GMC. |

I also have had my Driver Side wheel bearing go out on my 2003 2500HD w/Duramax at 55,000 miles and my mechanic Freind said to be ready for the other side to go out soon. This is a bunch of crap for how much this truck costs.I was lucky it did not ruin my brakes but I could have.

TECHNICAL
Subject: Clunking Noise Under Hood and Can Be Felt in the Steering Wheel and/or Steering Column (Lubricate Intermediate Steering Shaft Assembly) Based on recent Engineering validation testing, it has now been determined that either grease (Molycote Grease (dark color) or NYE Grease (yellowish color)) can be used on all vehicles noted in this bulletin. Either grease will provide a significantly longer interval than replacing the I-shaft itself. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 00-02-35-0031 (Section 02 - Steering). Note: To properly grease the splines, the I-shaft MUST be removed from the vehicle. Failure to do so will result in a repeat repair and a dissatisfied customer. Condition Some customers may comment on a clunk-type noise coming from under the hood that also can be felt in the steering wheel. These conditions may be more noticeable when turning at low speeds on rough road surfaces. Diagnostic Tips Use the information below to help diagnose the source of the noise. Frame Snap and/or Popping Type Noise - A frame snap or popping type noise can be duplicated on rough or smooth road surfaces with steering wheel input to the left or the right. This type of noise can be HEARD and is typically louder with the windows rolled down. For additional information refer to Corporate Bulletin # 03-08-61-002F or newer-Snap/Popping Type Noise Coming from Front of Vehicle (Remove Front Crossmember, Change Fastener Orientation) Intermediate Shaft Clunk - Intermediate shaft clunk is heard and FELT in the steering wheel and/or steering column area, typically while driving on rough road surfaces with steering wheel input.
