Well, I took my 2008 AWD Equinox Ls back to the dealer for the second time (see 4/12/2012 above). This time I got the service manager to ride with me. He immediately sensed and acknowleged the misfire problem and took the Equinox into the shop. The mechanic found one bad spark plug that, he said, was damaged because of bad plug wires. He replaced the bad plug and all six wires. The Equinox now runs great! The cost was covered by the 5-yr powertrain warranty. There were never any "check engine" codes.

This happened with my wifes 07 Equinox. The problem at 40,000 and 60,00 was the Cylinder 1 plug had a crack in the porceline and was grounding to the motor during exceleration. This is hard to get to. It is the plug closest to the pasenger wheel in the back. You have to remove the coil pack to get to it, and don't over torque the new one.

Wow! I searched to see if anyone else was having sputtering issues with their equinox. Low and behold this was first link shown on search page. I've been so worried about what was wrong with my car. I'm taking it today to have it looked at. Those of you that got help from GM to cover the cost of replacing bad spark plug wires, who did you contact? Mine is an 07'. I haven't seen anything come in the mail concerning a recall and I did buy my Equinox new. What's the approximate cost of this repair? Thanks!

We have 2007 Chevy Equinox w/64000 miles. Started to miss fire/sputter under load & at low rpms. Had an extended warranty took in & testing revealed a bad spark plug & wire, they also said it was covered under internal memo of the same problem you all mention. They only replaced 1 plug & I think they shouldve just replaced them all since in there & who knows how long until others go bad?
Guess it's all about getting customer back in to pay!

My 2008 Equinox was having this ignition problem. I left it with a dealer for repair. Next day the service tech called and said they could not duplicate the problem and that a diagnostic test showed nothing wrong and that there was nothing they could do because the check engine light never came on. A few weeks later, the problem getting worse, I insisted that the Service Manager ride with me. After a short drive he acknowledged the problem. They replaced all wires and bad plu next day. Problem solved. Covered under 5-yr powertrain warranty.

Your dealer should know call them in service. They didn't do a recall only internal memo we were told. It's a bunch of bull. Estimated costprobably $200-300. Good luck!

I also have an 08 equinox that sputtered, missed a beat, took it to two dealers, the first one told me that they would have to keep it up to a week as they were overloaded with repairs, did not even see what was wrong, just wanted to park it on the lot until they could get to it. I refused and took it to the second dealer, within 2 hours they had found a cidanoid bad on top of the powetrain but said it was not covered by the oowertrain warranty and charged me $287. for fixing it. Before I got home motor light come on briefly and the same noise of before. I called them, they said bring it back in. I took it in the next day and they told me thatthey could look again but it was not going to show there was not anything wrong with it. I took it to a private person which said after he drove it that it was the spark plug and/or both plugs and wires. He changed both and it runs perfect. I want to know of the ones who called the company if you have telephone numbers. I don't think I will ever buy another chevrolet product and I have bought around 10-15 cars in the past from a dealer. They do not want to service their products if they think there is a big problem. There was never a engine lite connected to the spark plug problem.

I have a 2008 Equinox that was experiencing this problem. The first time I took it to the dealer the service dept said they wer enable to duplicate the problem and couldn't fix it without a code. They charged me $50 for the diagnosis leaving the probnlem unfixed. I few months later I took the care and insisted that the service manager ride with me on a test run. The missing was immediately apparent and they nfixed it, no charge, under the 5 year power train warranty.

I also have an equinox, 08, with the same problems that all of you have. Took to two dealerships, first one said they were full up on repairs, to leave it and maybe they could get to it dometime in the next week, had 40 cars ahead of me, he said. I did not leave my car and took it to the next one and they said all they could find was a EGR valve. Said it was not covered by powertrain. It is connected to powertrain by being on top of it. They fixed that and and told me that was all they could find. before I got home, my problems accured again, I called and they said bring it back in, I did and they told me that they could send it back but would find nothing wrong with it. I took it to someone else, not a mechanic, and he told me what was wrong just by my telling him what it was doing. He put new wires and plugs in it for me and now it drives like a new one. I caled this am to the car dealership and told them what I had done and finally got to talk with the manager of the repair department and the person that told me "they wouldn't find anything wrong" is in trouble and they will pay me for the plugs and wire but not labor as he wasn't a mechanic. Nothing seems to be under powertrain.

Hi! Been reading some of the posts. I have a 2007 Chevy Equinox with 75,000 miles on it. Never had any problems with it whatsoever!...until 3 months before the car loan is to be paid off. Bought the car used in 2007 with 8,000 miles on it from a Chevrolet Dealer. Car started sputtering about two months ago. Took it to the dealer (place where I get regular maintenance. Got a misfiring code. Replaced the spark plugs and the EGR valve. 4 days later, sputtering started again. Called the dealer to ask what else could be the problem? Told him the check engine light wasn't on. His reply, was "could be many things. Would have to run a diagnostic" After spending $343 4 days earlier, I wasn't about to take my car back in. Took it to Oil Express. Guy said it was the catalytic converter. Didn't charge me anything for diagnosing. Told me to take it to a shop that specializes in mufflers, catalytic converters, etc. Took it to Midas, and they said the same thing. The inside of the catalytic converter was broken up, according to the mechanic.$350 for a new one. Picked the car up the next day. Mechanic tells me that the hose still had debris from the old converter not cleaning the gas (or something like that) Suggested high octane gas be used in the car next fill up, then after a week or so, should be fine. Followed his recommendations. Now 3 weeks later, car still sputters,at low speeds and when going from 55 to 60 on the freeway. I'm broke, frustrated and upset! Mostly because, after reading these posts(very informative I might add), I find that some 2007=09 Equinox had issues with spark plug wires. I comes to mind, remember that I asked the mechanic at the dealership if they checked the spark plug wires when they were replacing the spark plugs. His answer was "No". I should've come on this site first! Thanks everyone for their posts.:)

We purchased a very low mileage Equinox w/V6 and AWD approx.2 yrs ago and have had no problems until last week when at a bit more than 40,000 miles we noticed the exact same symptoms of surge/hesitation/engine miss described by so many. It occurred while driving in "D" at a steady speed at about 50 - 55 m.p.h.and trying to accel. When it happens you can watch the Tach. and observe the engine R.P.M.'s fluctuate between 1800 and 1500 R.P.M.s. Driving in local traffic with the selector in "I" minimizes the condition somewhat. I had been suspicious of spark plugs and/or ignition wires..but now, thanks to all of the other comments my suspicions were confirmed. This is a severe anxiety causing condition when it happens and I look forward to having it corrected. Thanks to all contributors for the info!!

I have a 2007 Equinox that is sputtering/jerking when going uphill. It usually only does it after I have driven the car a while and it has had time to warm up. I dont have any check engine lights on. Maybe the same issue as others above??(spark plugs and wires)

My 2009 Equinox with 61000 miles would jerk at 45 going up hill just when it would be ready to down shift making you think the transmission was failing. The dealer checked it out at told me I have a bad transmission and it needs major repair. I found this thread and replaced the spark plugs and wires myself. PROBLEM SOLVED!

I have a 2008 Equinox LT FWD with the 3400 motor in it with 89,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago I noticed it would miss while at highways speeds(50-60mpg) under load(going up slight hills) and it would do this while the vehicle was in 5th gear at around 1500-1800 rpm. If the vehicle downshifted to 4th it would stop missing and run normally. Then today it started to miss almost constantly. The funny thing is that the check engine light does not come at all. Which I think it is wierd.
I had a belt replaced about 1 month ago just for preventative maintenance reasons and asked them to go ahead and replace the spark plugs while I was there. They said the vehicle had 88,000 miles on it and the spark plugs are good till 100,000 miles and there really was no need to replace them.
I was pissed off because after asking them to replace them and now possibly have problems with a bad spark plug, I called the dealer today and asked them if they think it is a plug or plug wires and they asked if the check engine light was on and I said no. They said they would have to run a diagnostics check on it because they said it may not be a misfire it may be the transmission lunging. They said when they hook it up to the machine it will be able to tell if it's misfired and how many times and what cylinder. But my thing is that if it is saving these misfirings in the computer then that means the computer does detect a misfire and that means there should be a check engine light on giving a engine misfire code. Does anyone know if it will save a misfire in in the computer but not trigger the check engine light?
I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and what it might be? It does seem to point to the transmission. Only does it in 1 gear(5th gear) at low rpm, it doens't do it at all driving in town(up hills or anything)and ofcourse driving in town you are only using lower gears. And ofcourse that would explain why there isn't a misfire check engine light either.
But then again 9 times out of 10 if you got a bad wire or plug it will only misfire under load and low rpm. Maybe while driving in the city i never really am under enough load at lower gears to put a big enough strain to cause it to misfire.
Any help would be nice. I do have a powertrain warranty on it so luckily if it is the transmission I am covered. But i'd rather not have the headache either.
We had a belt replaced, same thing happened to our 2009 Equinox. WE took it to the dealership and they replaced a broken spark plug wire...and some other wire had been disconnected. WE are running great now except for the problem we are having with the gear shift. When you turn off the car, the ignition won't release the key..so your battery is on, lights on, everything on can't get the key out. We start it again, back up, put it back in park, key won't release. We start it again, back up...and maybe this time it will release...not sure what is going on with that?

Well I stand corrected again! It was NOT the tranny. 2 bad plug wires showed up. Service rep. said there was a "bulletin" on wires that were known faulty. So no charge, took about 3 1/2hrs. 30 mile drive back home,so far so good!! Not a bad experience at all. Good luck.....
Hi Chris, my 08 equinox lt AWD is going the same thing . I do not have a warranty and I have 75000 milages on it .. Will it still be covered ? And this 'company bulletin' you all speak of is it just GM? I shall call them and explain and they fix it free of charge ?

I have an 08 Equinox that was having the exact same problem. I called the dealership and there is an internal memo to GM service departments to fix this issue. They replace all plugs and wires on my vehicle and paid for it as well. The service manager did not know about the internal memo until I mentioned it. I waited till I got a flashing engine light (shows and engine misfire) and that gave them enough to confirm the issue.

GM WILL PAY FOR THIS REPAIR, but you have to push them on it. She told me the memo said that they would cover this repair cost for up to 125,000 miles. Once you crossed the 125K mark, you waited too long.

I was able to "punch the gas" on a hill to get a flashing code. Don't do this too long because you can damage the catalytic converter. All they needed was to have it flash for just a little bit to confirm the misfire was due to bad wires.

Like I said, they replaced all 6 plugs and wires on mine. You may have to gripe a bit, but they want 100% satisfaction rating, so they generally will do what they need to get it! As the consumer, you are in the driver seat and do not have to let them push you around.

Thanks everyone for posting, I thought I was losing my mind. I have a 2007, start sputtering just before Christmas. Like everyone else, the diagnostic did not show anything, no warning lights on. I have had a complete tune up, replaced 6 spark plugs, filled the tank twice with high octane gas,... I am calling the dealer now to see if it would still be covered. Probably not, but at least now I know what it is.
