I have a 2008 Equinox LT FWD with the 3400 motor in it with 89,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago I noticed it would miss while at highways speeds(50-60mpg) under load(going up slight hills) and it would do this while the vehicle was in 5th gear at around 1500-1800 rpm. If the vehicle downshifted to 4th it would stop missing and run normally. Then today it started to miss almost constantly. The funny thing is that the check engine light does not come at all. Which I think it is wierd.

I had a belt replaced about 1 month ago just for preventative maintenance reasons and asked them to go ahead and replace the spark plugs while I was there. They said the vehicle had 88,000 miles on it and the spark plugs are good till 100,000 miles and there really was no need to replace them.

I was pissed off because after asking them to replace them and now possibly have problems with a bad spark plug, I called the dealer today and asked them if they think it is a plug or plug wires and they asked if the check engine light was on and I said no. They said they would have to run a diagnostics check on it because they said it may not be a misfire it may be the transmission lunging. They said when they hook it up to the machine it will be able to tell if it's misfired and how many times and what cylinder. But my thing is that if it is saving these misfirings in the computer then that means the computer does detect a misfire and that means there should be a check engine light on giving a engine misfire code. Does anyone know if it will save a misfire in in the computer but not trigger the check engine light?

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and what it might be? It does seem to point to the transmission. Only does it in 1 gear(5th gear) at low rpm, it doens't do it at all driving in town(up hills or anything)and ofcourse driving in town you are only using lower gears. And ofcourse that would explain why there isn't a misfire check engine light either.

But then again 9 times out of 10 if you got a bad wire or plug it will only misfire under load and low rpm. Maybe while driving in the city i never really am under enough load at lower gears to put a big enough strain to cause it to misfire.

Any help would be nice. I do have a powertrain warranty on it so luckily if it is the transmission I am covered. But i'd rather not have the headache either.

Sounds like the same problem I'm having also. I haven't had my car checked out as of yet. I recieved a recall notice for this engine was told not to take it to a dealer until I had a problem with it. My car has 53,000 miles on it. I'm not sure if this issue is covered in the recall...my check engine light also is not coming on.

We bought a 07 and the very next day we were getting a GM reman tranny put into it at the cost of GM, then within 24 hours of the tranny being finished and us getting the vehicle back it started to do this same thing you describe. Eventually it did throw an EGR range code that caused a trany system control code, but they both went away a day after they were triggered. So my wife continued to drive it and as of now I am calling to get it into the shop because the jerking has spread so I can now feel it when in passing gear and some times at slower speeds

Funny, I went online tonight to find why my 2007 is doing the same thing at 51,000 miles and I found this thread. It started hitching at about 50mph as I accelerated a week ago and I plan to take it in this week. I'm glad I'm not alone and will take this thread in. Steflynn, for what it's worth, I bought mine new and have hardly had any problems. In fact, I've only had the water leakage problem discussed broadly in another forum. I've enjoyed the car otherwise.

My daughter's 2007 was having a similar problem, the dealer said that on some 2007=09 there is a problem with the spark plug wires. After checking the VIN number her's was one of the. They put in the new wires and replace two plugs free and it runs great

They didn't show any recalls on my particular model but that is def a starting point. that and maybe bad gas....... and on thursday the stupid ignition wouldn't release my key.... my husband almost punched a hole in the console. lol. This is very disappointing for our first new car :(

My wife has a 2008 LS and cylynder #1 and #3 missfire due to a bad ignition coil, making it burn gas crazy.. So my mechanic replaced it and no more problems.....

I want to let everyone know the cause of my problem was bad spark plug wires - the same problem TEM from Atlanta discussed. It is considered a trend and a known common problem by the company and they fully covered the $300 repair. I had an extended warranty and the claim was denied so I called the company's customer service line and after their call to the dealer it was approved internally. I was very impressed with the professionalism and quick assistance of the agent.

Same bucking issue as described.Took it in and was told bad wires and plugs .Have paid for extended warranty but was told this is not covered over 300.00 repair with diagnostic check. I can t afford that so i brought the damn thing home and willtry t ochange them myself.Had this car for a year and have already had to replace ,thermostat, radiator, water pump and head gasket and got jerked around by the warranty co. on every issue.Radiator costs 700.00 out of my pocket because dealer put wrong detail on paperwork so warranty co. wouldnt pay and dealership wouldnt backthier mistake even after admitting to me and warranty co. I am exhausted with this.

Chad, no!!! If it's the spark plug problem I described above there's an internal company bulletin that covers it free of charge. I also was told my extended warranty wouldn't cover it and would have to pay. I saw a trend from my online research and thought the company must also know about it. I had the dealer call the company to appeal the decision and it was still denied. I then called their corporate office customer service line and after several hours received a call back saying it would be covered. It ended up being a great experience and I have faith the company will back up their product.

So glad to hear that we're not all crazy!!We just picked up a 07'LS with 37,700miles.I thought it was a "miss" at first. When accelerating very gently/easy up a incline,it felt like a miss or chug. I believe now, that it is in the tranny or shift point. The car runs fine other wise.It seems to me it cant "decide" what gear it wants run in. If you step on it a bit it will kickdown a gear,no problem. But,ease into it and seems to kick in and out for just a milla-sec. So I'm heading to the dealer Fri. a.m I hope its plugs/wires but.... I'll post my findings! Peace...

Well I stand corrected again! It was NOT the tranny. 2 bad plug wires showed up. Service rep. said there was a "bulletin" on wires that were known faulty. So no charge, took about 3 1/2hrs. 30 mile drive back home,so far so good!! Not a bad experience at all. Good luck.....

Chris, that was the same problem I had. Hopefully our collective experiences will help other people with the same problem.

I am having the same problem on my 2008 Equinox. I have 50,000 miles on it. Every time I am accelerating between 45-55 mph the car misfires and sputters. No check engine light comes on. This problem started two weeks ago. I have tried a fuel injector cleaner, and that did not work. I am glad I am not the only one with this problem. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow to see what they can do for me.

2011 EQ 4cyl bought new 3 miles on it. It started jerking when it lugged down. GM replaced sensors. Had in in several times and now they are saying it is working as designed. Well! it didn't do it when it was new and it didn't do it when they first changed sensors. The're telling me its my problems now and I'm just making it do it.

I'm having this engine sputter problem too, with my 2008 Equinox LS, AWD. The Chevy dealer I took it too ran a diagnosis and test drive and found no indication of a problem. They wont do anything because there is no code stored or check engine lite. I showed the service rep the letter I got from GM about the problem with spark plug wires and he ignored it. He said it could be the torque converter and they can fix it under the 5-yr powertrain warranty if it gets worse. Bill in Crofton, Maryland

I just wanted to write back about my problem (Mar 15, 2012). They ended up replacing 5 spark plug wires and I haven't had a problem since. It was covered and no charge to me. I would print this forum and show your dealer. If they won't do anything for you, call chevy directly.

I have a 2005 Equinox & had this problem 2 years ago & now it is doing the same thing! No more warranty. It was covered the first time. Going to be interesting to see what they will charge me this time.

Susan, Are you getting a check engine light this time? I've still got the problem and am just living with it.
Your 2005 should have a 5-year powertrain warranty.
