Equinox air conditioner

I have a 2006 equinox and the air conditioner gets really cold when I first turn it on. So cold that little white flakes some times come out. However, it starts to get warm after driving for about 25-30 minutes. I took it and got Freon but it in but the problem kept happening. I know it is not a problem with Freon because it is super cold and goes hot instead of never getting cold.

I took it to a mechanic that was a family friend and he figured out the problem. I have no clue what anything is called but basically there is a valve or something that is supposed to shut to keep the outside air from getting in so that your air conditioner will cool. Well mine keeps getting stuck open and allows the hot air from outside in. I would have gotten it fixed except the mechanic was an old man who had no help and he said he couldn't take the dash off himself. He did tell me how to fix it for now...it doesn't always work but you turn the temperature knob towards hot and then back to the coldest setting and sometimes if it works you will here the valve shut and the air will get colder.

Does anyone know what this is part is called? I want to be able to tell another mechanic what is wrong so I don't have to pay for a diagnosis.

I have an 06 Equinox with the same problem. It cools but does not get cold. Taking it in again tomorrow to the service department, but I refuse to buy a new compressor. And they wonder why no one wants to buy American made cars!

I have a 2011 Equinox. The air conditioner works fine 90% of the time but at times it will not come on at all. As in the fan does not blow. Banging the fan does not help, but then mysteriously it just comes on. Sometimes after messing with the fan speed control, but sometime not, then it just comes on for no reason.

I thought I had my problem fixed by having the fans replaced, it worked great for about 1 year. Now the problem is back, starts off cold but after about 30 min it will get warm then cold again. I know it is not the compressor and the Freon is full. Has anyone figured this thing out yet.

ok I got my wife's 05 equinox in the shop right now for the exact same problems. I am glad that all of you have posted info on here. Something is going to have to happen cause I refuse to shell out all this money to keep working on my car. I will be looking forward to your posts to see if GM finally comes up with a fix.
Thanx all of u
I am so mad, have spent a lot of money and time with the same problems. I bought my equinox new off the lot (GM). I took it to the Dealer had it serviced and returned to me stating that there's is nothing wrong with my air conditioner . I time that GM accept that they have made an error in that compartment . I've spent my hard earned money on a new SUV to come to find out its a lemon, never again will I buy a GM

We own a 2007 Equinox. It's been a workhorse for us... hauling complete dorm room accessories to and from colleges, luggage and equipment for various vacations... even debris from hurricane Sandy. Three days ago our A/C got funky. Driving to upstate NY, the compressor cut out, blower blew hot air into the cabin, followed by droplets of condensation and ice crystals. Sound familiar? Called dealership's service dept and was told "we know nothing about that problem"..(seriously???) so we hit them with the multitude of blogs screaming about this problem and asked if we should print copies to show them. We told them that we saw case numbers being offered after contacting GM to fortify others who followed up with their own story to GM. We saw bulletin and document references from techs that already scoped out possible reasons... he said he'd call back. They scheduled it to be diagnosed next Wednesday. I emailed GM. I will print off a sampling of various blogs, even the Chevrolet forum speaks about this issue from a Cust Svc Rep named Tricia... when I hear something, I'll update.

**Update**
I got my car back and it has officially been in the shop for 30 days. I have hired an attorney. When I got the car back on Tuesday evening, it was getting cold and today BAM warm air blows out again. This time they replaced a filter and the evaporator temperature sensor. They still did not take care of the moldy, musty smell or fix my window. AND now the compressor constantly cuts off and then comes back on. The service manager said that was a concern of his. Then in the same breath told me that he found that it's normal. I'm sorry, but the compressor cycling off and on EVERY FIVE SECONDS is NOT normal! I am completely fed up with this car. GM's legal department called me last night but my attorney advised me not to return their call and that he will call them back to let them know that I have retained legal counsel. I will update when all is done to let everyone know what happens.
Tracy, the similar problem happened with me. At first, I thought it just needed a recharge. In the end, it just didn't blow out cold air at all so that wasn't the issue. So my husband and I took it to a mechanic that he knows wouldn't just make things up to get money. Turns out the car needs an expansion valve. It's broken. He also said not to try and use the ac at all or the whole unit could blow up. So be careful! THAT is an expensive fix.

Yes, I have a 2005 Chevy Equinox,I bought it in 2007 , I had all of my problems happen to me after my extended warranty ended. Every thing from breaks 2005 needing repair,2010 key ignition locking up,2012 blown head gaskets with a repair bill of $3,500.00,Cd player stop working in 2010,2011 ac diagnose and service check for leaks non found and they put freon in the vehicle it got cool for a little while,2013 96,000 miles over heated just recently replace two hoses, and I was told that their was no blocks in my radiator. Now my Equinox has this funny over heat smell. My AC still blowing hot air. My heater works find bill $398.00. But I still think something is wrong. In last past 6 years over $5,000.00 in repairs.I was told compressor is good but I may need an ac pump. I think somehow my vehicle is not recognizing cold from the hot once the ac is on. Now I just want to say my worst second investment with six months left to pay on this vehicle. I'm accepting all comments and donations at this time. This is my story Got to love Chevy. Do they really stand behind their products, or is it just about the money. PS going to call the 1 - 800 number and talk with someone as well or maybe even join a class action law suit against GM/CHEVY !
Same exact problems with mine as yours except I threw an engine rod through the block last year and had to have a new engine installed.Bottom line is this clearly a design problem and GM just chooses to ignore it. So many identical AC problems but "The General" won't stand behind their shitty products. Not surprising as I used to work for GM. Biggest POS company on the face of the earth!

I have a 2010 Equinox with same issues. I have owned the car for 15 months and had AC issues every step of the way. I am to a point now where I think I have pretty much replaced the whole AC system. Last year...they first replaced the freon...that lasted about a month. Then...took it back because of hot air blowing in the cabin...compressor replacement. About 5 months later (4 of those months the AC was not being used because it was winter in Tennessee)...they replaced a valve and the compressor again. Now we moved to Houston and it is another $700 fix for a new condenser. So all in all...this AC system will cost us $2,000 in a year.

If you are getting little snow flakes it is holding humidity. You need to cleam or have someone clean the evaporator core drain. This should keep it from freezing up and keep cold air flowing.

I ended up replacing my entire AC system.... Cost me about $1000 but It works now... In my case, when the compressor would cycle off, I was told that it was because it was low in Freon which to me is either a Freon leak or a bad compressor... My two cents.. Not a mechanic BTW.
Since I replaced the entire system (not just piece milled it) it works fine.

Go ahead and bite the bullet and replace the AC system. I recharged the AC on this car way too many times... Works for a few weeks and then hot again...

I just replaced the A/C compressor/kit on my 2011 Equinox with 27,600 miles. Of course, the generous 3-year warranty had run out so I had to pay $1364.00. GM has not been cooperative at all--they just keep reminding me of their Bumper to Bumper warranty guidelilnes. I told them I've had 7 GM cars, and I'm well-aware of their sorry warranty!

My 2006 equinox is feeling like it's going to stall and is idling slightly when I have the a/c on. When I turn it off its all fine and doesn't do none of that. What could be the problem?

a problem with it but the dealer doesnt see it.
If I dont turn the fan off then when I start the car the A/C light comes on the dial. This is even when I have the temp to max red for heat. i brought it to a dealer and they showed me another
equinox and a gmc terrain that did the same thing.
I have found many new Equinox that dont do that.
Why would I want to have to shut the A/C off everytime I startup? My garage is not heated and I live in NY where it is still chilly at night so why
would I need the AC to come on in the morning? The dealer told me that by default the A/C comes on if you have it directed at the windsheild this is to clear the fog (ok but my car it happens at all locations feet, vent, windsheild. I dont know what I should do next?
On my vehicle there is a setting that I had to change for the AC to not just come on when the vehicle is started. Its under settings

My sister's 07equinox is having ac problem.. It cuts off when the air starts to cool. My mechanic checked it out, freon level seems to be good and is not sure what the problem could be. No ice crystals or mist. It just cuts off when it starts to blow cooler air. Didn't have this problem when she bought it about a year or little more ago. I hope by posting this, an answer can lead me & him in the right direction to fix it. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be??
