my 2008 Equinox a/c goes from cold air to cool air back and forth and does not cool the car ,also if you put a/c controll above 2 clicks it is so loud you can not hear any thing but the roar of it. The first time I took it to the dealer, they said it was low on charge , they evacuated the system and recharged it ,said it was fine . Still same problem .returned to dealer ,they replaced an ambient air sensor ,said it was ok . Still same problem.
I took my service person for a ride he affirmed the problem ,now he tells me this is the way all Chevys are made. I am 64 years old ,I have driven many cars in my life ,I know this is NOT how any car a/c should perform. Any comments would be appreciated.

I too have an 08 Equinox and the AC runs cold then goes warm, it does it all the time. I took it once in for service and they had to add freon to the system, it was nearly 1/2 gone, then it worked for about 4 hours without incident. However it started to do the same thing and 3 weeks later my vehicle is back in the shop again, same problem. They evacuated the system and had to add freon again. I made the svc manager keep the car and figure out why I have to continuously refill the freon every 3 weeks. That was today (5/7/08)

I bought an 08 Equinox last winter. The AC will get the car cool if I put it on recirculate and run the fan at a high speed but it won't get cold. The dealer repaired a small leak and added coolent. It still won't get cold. I wonder if the AC unit is undersized.

I have an '07 Equinox. I sent it to the shop for the third time today. It seems to go from cold to warm and back and forth. Also, the blower seems to kind of lose blowing power (although it doesn't completely die). The first time I took it in, they said the coolent fluid was low and added some but couldn't find a leak. Second time I guess they thought I was just crazy. Today, I took it in (but to a new service advisor) and he said "They found the problem". Apparently it's the heat/air controller. The part should be in soon - we'll see what happens.

I bought an 08 Equinox in December; didn't need AC during the winter; around April I started noticing the temp change when I accelerated or stopped; brought it to the dealership two weeks ago; at first they said it had too much freon, so they evacuated the system and refilled it to proper level; still had same issue; brought back on Monday; service rep felt the temp change but techs could not duplicate; they gave it back two days later without any repair and no advice; decided to google the issue and found this website and two others; I called the service mgr today; he said the techs couldn't figure out what was wrong; I asked if it could be design flaw, engineering issue, or problem with sensor or circuit; he said he had nothing in his system about this type of problem; I then told him what I found by googling and how this seems to have been an issue since 2005; at that moment he "discovered" that an internal memo went out about 2 days ago(!); the problem is a computer anomaly; it's the engine control module that is causing the problem, and the way to fix it is to have the software updated; brought it in, took 15 minutes for svc dept to reload software and, so far, it seems to be working correctly; they didn't give me an invoice, however, because they're waiting to see if the issue is resolved over the weekend; thought this info might help others in this situation

Priscilla - they claimed to have done the same software update to my '07... to no avail. I am taking mine back in on 7/8 - we'll see what happens next! This has been nothing short of a nightmare. GM needs to get their act together!

I have the 2008 Equinox also. Same AC problems the rest of you are having.....took it in and told them the problem of warm air and they said it is operating to the manufacturer's specifications. What do you do??? I get cool enough, but not like what I have been used to in other vehicles, I just fear that the whole thing will quite working when just as the warranty expires!

One more thought...Has anyone contacted GM about this? The only thing I have done is write in the comments they want after servicing your vehicle that I am not satisfied with the AC. They need to figure this out and have a recall on these vehicles. Sounds like there is something wrong with the AC in all of the Equinox's.

I have a 2005 Equinox that was blowing warm air off and on with the AC on. Took it to the dealer and they said its one of two things the expansion valve or the compressor. They put in an expansion valve first but it did not change, so they replaced the compressor. Just got it back today and so far its working great.

3 Hours labor $300.
Valve kit $167.
Compressor $460.

TOTAL $930.):

Still cheaper than a new car, Sales tax, dealer fees, so on...

So, I got the controller changed out - absolutely NO resolution. I called GM and they just want me to take it back to the dealer. I bought this vehicle BRAND NEW and have had it in the shop 5 times. I can't take much more of this BS.

Hey Hill.....did the new compressor work? Today they told me that no matter if it were the current compressor, or a new one....it's made to cycle between cold and warm air so the compressor doesnt overheat. Just curious as whats happened....as they told me that as long as it is working to "manufacturer specifications" there's nothing they will do. UGH

I have a 2008 Equinox that I purchased on June 25, 08 and it has been in the service dept at the dealership since Tues for the air going from cold to warm when I stop, slow down, take my foot off the gas, etc and when I get back up to speed it goes back to cold. They told me that it now could be a glitch/flaw in the engineering design and chevrolet is looking into it but they do not have a solution to fix the problem yet. I was told to call Chevrolet customer assistance to report the problem and if enough people call in to report the same problem it could be classified so that a recall is made, or it could possiblly fall under the lemon law if they can't find a solution to fix this problem. My dealership told me they tested the 08 Equinox's on the lot and most of them had this problem. When I contacted Chevy customer assistance they documented it and gave me a service request # and told me they could not find any other calls about this so PLEASE all of you with this problem call 1-800-222-1020 and report this and get a service request # so that something can be done about this!

So far, it has worked perfectly. It hasn't blown a single puff of warm air. The dealership we took it to was pretty thorough & tried a few things that didn't change it, but as soon as they changed the compressor, it worked fine... The service dept was a Chevy dealership. Here are the exact words from our invoice description:
Tech found low pressure to high (60psi). System not blowing cold. Tech installed expansion valve to see if pressure changed. No change in pressures. necessary to replace A/C Compressor that was weak causing low pressures therefore not blowing cold. Recharge system & verify repair.

If they wont take your concern seriously, I would definately take it to a different Chevy dealer.

I have a 2005 Equinox that is doing the same thing. I bought it used in Oct 2006 and when summer came around I had the problem immediately. I took it in to be checked and the warranty had expired 2 months prior. I could not afford to have them look at it at that time. This summer I had my dad look at it b/c he is a mechanic. He checked the freon--fine. He replaced the expansion valve--made no change. At this point I'm out 70 bucks. We were about to replace the compressor when I found this website. Thank goodness I didnt waste my savings on a compressor just for it to probably do the same thing. I called GM customer service and was told they could do nothing until I take it to a dealer and have it diagnosed. So I didnt get a request # and I will be out another $80-$100 to have it diagnosed.. I live in Texas and have two young children that steady complain about being too hot and sweating while we are in the car. This has been a nightmare to say the least. Why is GM not taking responsibility for this problem?

According to my dealership Chevrolet/GM is aware of the problem and they are trying to figure out what is going on. Since they can't fix it at the moment, b/c they are not sure how, I was given a loaner vehicle to drive. I am suppose to contact my dealership next Thursday and they are hoping by then Chevy/GM will know more about it or even have a solution to this problem so they can decide what to do about my vehicle since it is not even a month old. If they can't fix the problem they are going to have to replace my vehicle with something else that does work or I am getting my attorney involved.

This is BS!!! I called and reported it and it looks like 2 of you did also. I am going to get my attorney involved if my dealership does not do something about it or have any new information from Chevy/GM by tomorrow.
