I am having the exact same problem with my 2005 equinox. I have contacted GM as I do not feel it should be our responsibilty to pay to replace the pipe and valve. Logically if you discontinue a part and make a "replacement" kit then there was a reason = it was faulty to begin with. I am very disappoionted with everything I have researched on GM and their customer service or lack of. I even tried to just research positive remarks and I can't find one! It's a real eye opener for what they have become. I should hear back from them in a few days. I will be sure to share my experience good or bad with as many people as I can. If it is good, I feel they deserve the credit, I've always bought GM. If it is bad, then I will be sure to share that as well. GM had earned high praise in the US and the american people have been supportive. If they can't hold up there end if the deal then I will be sure to let everyone I know be aware. I was planning on a new vehicle purchase this spring. If this isn't handled to satisfaction, I will NEVER buy GM again.

I am having the same problem with my EGR Tube (which has a crack in it), which is what is causing the noise and smell in your car. I have a good friend that is a mechanic and showed me the deal. The problem is Chevy had a problem with the EGR Tube or Valve we took the EGR Tube off in 5 minutes and ordered the new one for $55. Turns out it is 2" shorter then the original. We called back to the part supplier and they said Chevy was having major problems with the EGR Tube or Valve and now you can only buy a kit that replaces both (with the EGR Tube now shorter)for $280 and a cost of around $400 to have someone else install it for you. I am now looking on how I can get Chevy to pay the difference in cost due to it being a defect on their end. If it was not a big difference in price I would not care, but Chevy screwed up and needs to pay for it, not us. Let me know what you ended up doing, my email is: sparks103074@yahoo.com. Thanks

If anything spilled, even just a little it will fry it. Tried to fix _yself by taking apart and gently taking corrosion off and nodda. you can find the_ occasionally at salvage yards but very hard and a few on refurbished sites. looking for a second ti_e for another. so_thing was spilled on it again, just a little too. so if i find another then will deff cover it. good luck in finding one.

Add me to the lemon pile, my equinox has a little over 74000 miles ... I have owned it for 2 k of those miles, but it has been in the garage most of the time.. New head gaskets, transmission, drive shaft.. Piece of junk.

After coming back after a couple years and reading a lot of these posts, I felt the need to add to the discussion once again. This probably will be my last addition.

A good number of you are having repairs done that are not even theoretically possible, or at least not on a 185 HP grocery getter vehicle. You really need to educate yourselves before walking into the dealership or make sure you can really trust your mechanic - because things like a $2000 job on the rear differential (part time unit, NOT full time unit like trucks) is a total screwing. A drive shaft replacement is bull crap, they probably put in $25 u-joints. Head gaskets can happen, but probably because you haven't changed your coolant or you rev the motor to high heaven every day. The old 3.4 (grand am, Buick rendezvous) had problems with this, but the new 3.4 (LSJ) has new design gaskets. That $1700 fuel pump problem someone had costs $250 at Advance Auto Parts - so you just paid $1450 for 3 hours of labor. Don't even get me started on the $70 headlight bulbs you can get a Walmart for $15.

I now have 205,000 miles on my 05 Equinox. I have done only routine maintenance and my worst problem was that I had to replace the front shocks with new design shocks because of a clanking sound on turns. That's really not a bad problem and was under $500 to repair. The key here is to do the maintenance either yourself, or educate yourself so you don't get screwed. Buy the Haynes manual for the 2005-2009 Equinox and you'll find that the $1000 dealer or shady mechanic repair can be done yourself for $50 and a couple hours honest labor.

The paint on the radio controls has started to wear off. This is mostly an annoyance but from what I understand was fixed in the 07+ models. Not a major issue for me but it should be pointed out.

I have the leather interior and it looks as good as it did 7 years ago, which is durable and clean looking. I did not buy the cloth because it looked and felt cheap then and I'd imagine it looks the same now. It was the same cloth as the rental spec Chevy Cobalt cars.

As far as gas mileage goes, I average 19-20 in a mix of 50/50 driving. When I do highway driving I can pull 25 mpg all day long provided I go the speed limit (65 mph)- if I cruise at 75 it drops to about 22 mpg. So go the speed limit and save some gas.

I'm sure a number of you have had real problems and it is too bad that GM won't help you out to keep your business. However, a number of you are getting totally raped by the dealer or your "trusted mechanic" and have only yourselves to blame. The rest of you reading this, learn from others mistakes and save some $$.

Neb,

I too have a 2005 Equinox. It has 100,000 miles on it now and very few problems. A couple of wheel bearings replaced under warranty. I also had the problem with the drive shaft going bad. It wasnt horribly expensive to fix.

As far as the paint wearing off the radio knobs, you can order new knobs from replacementradios.com . The 6 disc changer went bad in mine, I got just the changer part from the same website and fixed it myself for about $100.

It needs the 100k mile service, and the 'Nox is having a hard time starting occasionally when warm. It probably just needs plugs, wires, and fuel system cleaning, but I've read about the PCM recall here and wonder if it has anything to do with that too. is there a vin# range of the vehicles affected by this recall?

Thanks.

I have a 2006 Equinox which has run fine since I bought it in 2008 from a dealer. In the last several months my headlight went out, i replaced it, it went out again after only a month, same thing with my back right brake light. Then both brake lights, not the bar across the top, only the bottom 2 lights, but the bulbs are fine. then last week the headlights wouldn't turn off when I turned off the car, this happened several times over the last couple of days and i only got them off by switching from bright to normal, etc. When I opened the door this morning to leave for work, the radio was playing (NOT supposed to do this without starting it!) and when I put the key in the headlights immediatly came on and the brand new battery was completely dead! I never got the lights to go off again and had to drive my daughter's car to work because you apparenlty can't jump an Equinox without letting it sit on the cables for an hour???!!! Any suggestions? I am lost.

I just bought an 05 Equinox less than 2 months ago..I absolutely loved it until it decided that it wasn't going to start when it didn't want to..took it to the dealer who kept it for 2 weeks and claimed that it had "bad gas" when I refused to pick it up because I knew better than to fall for the "bad gas" excuse they decided to put it on a machine that 19 out of 20 times the car would start and they found that to be sufficient for them..well, I beg to differ..it should have started 20/20 times..needless to say, I had it back for 2 weeks when it decided to strand me again and not start...this is getting to be crazy..I love my equinox but I could certainly do without all the problems..my biggest fear when buying a "new" used car has come true...it's back at the dealership now and they're supposed to be replacing my PCM as well as my fuel pump and gas tank..if those aren't helfpul in fixing my problem their next step is to just get me into a completely different vehicle..I would hate to see it go but, it would sure be nice to not have to drive a rental for weeks on end!!:(

I am a second hand owner of an 05 equinox.Ive put 50,000 miles on her.It now has 110,000.Sure I had some issues, nothing that most chevys have.IE: wheel bearings. But overall if you take of it,its fine.As for the AWD,I went thru a foot of snow ,where a new 4WD ford pickup was buried and of the road ! Just remember to service it at manufactures specs ! IE: surpentine, tranny, rear end,etc... It matters !

What was the remedy or is the trunk still leaking? As an on-going headache the trunk wheel well fills with water and it needs to be emptied. This usually occurs when it rains as a minimum. We purposely left the Equinox in the driveway, did not drive it at all and it rained for the better of a day. The next day opened up the trunk and the water had returned. I requested the dealer provide a suggestion and his response was to check the seal around the back-up lights, so I will. Can't be any worse than sitting in the trunk area watching for a flow of water while someone hoses down the car.
All I did to fix it was drill a few small holes in the bottom of my trunk and it has been dry for 6 years. Hope this helps.

I have had my 2005 equinox for 2 years now and have had to replace practically every part of the engine. I have not got more than 3 months without a major repair, including replacing the fuel pump and struts 2 times! I am literally going into debt to keep this car running!
I HATE this car!!

I have a 2005 equinox, 23,497 miles, runs great some of the time. Usually I start up in morning, engine revs up, no throttle control. I let the car take off on its own and as it gains speed, I press on the brake, the engine immediately looses rpm, take my foot off the brake and the engine revs up and away we go, no throttle control. Some days the car runs just fine. Help!

I just want to know how to go about having the dealer check out this problem. My 2005 died on me Sunday evening. Have been told by a few mechanics it is probably the fuel pump.
Neb wrote:
I just posted this in a separate post, but I thought it would be beneficial for this information to be posted in a new topic for discussion.
Fact: A small percentage of Chevy Equinox vehicles manufactured in 2005 shipped with a faulty PCM. The PCM is the "Powertrain Control Module" which controls virtually everything on your car. Think of it like Windows on your PC at home. If Windows fails, the PC can't do what it is designed to do. Same with the PCM in your Equinox. If your PCM is faulty, you will get random problems at random times - most of the time this cannot be diagnosed at the dealer because the PCM itself cannot tell them it's failing, other than complete failure.
Problems:
The faulty PCM, which is covered under a NHTSA Recall for replacement, can cause the following problems at random times:
-Failure to start
-Poor fuel economy
-Radio/CD failure
-Fuel delivery issues (engine shut-off)
-EGR issues
-misc other issues
Replacing the PCM and having your new one programmed by a dealership will solve most of your problems.
Cost to fix the PCM:
If your specific Equinox is not covered under the Recall (which some are not) you can still do this on your own at your cost. A replacement PCM should cost no more than $400.00. The PCM takes under 10 minutes to physically install, and about 15-30 to program with a Tech II scanner costing you 1 hour of labor. Suggest this route to your dealer - and if they are honest - they will understand your concerns and go this route. Find a reputable shop/dealer you trust.
Minor Problems not related to the PCM:
-Thumping sounds from rear: Rear sway bar noise. You can replace it but it's not necessary.
-Odd smells in interior: This is most likely caused by the AWD unit (physically damaged from a road obstruction, or leaking) or possibly a leaky EGR valve. Get these checked out and hire a professional Carpet Cleaning service to clean your interior after the problem has been fixed.
Summary:
In all reality, the Chevrolet Equinox is a great vehicle to look into if you are looking for a Crossover SUV. It offers a mechanically solid drivetrain that has years of dependability behind it (3400 V6 is from the 60* V6 family of engines dating back to 1980, transmission is from Aisin in Japan and also used in the Saab 9-3.) The Equinox can also tow 3500 lbs, has attractive styling, can carry tons of cargo and materials, and has more rear-seat legroom than most BMW/Mercedes luxury sedans. Granted, it's got it's fair share of problems, but don't let something like a faulty PCM for one model year (2005) scare you away from this great deal of a vehicle.
For those of you who are mechanically inclined, this powertrain is extremely easy to work on as well, similar to working with a 3800 V6 powertrain.

My 2005 equinox 24,0000 miles runs perfect for a few days then goes haywire. Start up in AM, engine idles up to 2,000+- rpm then settles to a rough idle. Shift forward car takes off with no throttle control. Runs on its on. Will accelerate to appox. 45 mph with no throttle pedal control. To slow down, apply brakes, engine instantly loses rpm, release brakes, engine takes off and away you go. No fault codes. We are in a remote area of Alaska and no dealer. Help!

You probably got a lemon. Most of the people who come to the internet to post their problems are the very few who get lemons. The other 99% are happy and have no reason to post.
By the way, the 3400 V6 is not a "crappy" engine. It is time-tested and is warranted for 100,000 miles. This is from the same 60* V6 family that had motors frequently surpassing 250k miles with no major work.
As far as "the engine sounding like it will blow up" you are wrong. This is an OHV Pushrod engine, just like the engine in the Corvettes. That is how it sounds, the distinct roar of an OHV motor. Pushrod engines return better fuel economy and higher torque numbers than comparable OHC/DOHC engines. You can't complain about the acceleration either, as 0-60 in 8 seconds is pretty damned good for a SUV at this price range.
Get your problems fixed and get a different vehicle. Getting angry and losing focus won't solve your problems.
AT 100,000 MILES I WAS BARELY BREAKING IN MY NEW HONDA 3 YEARS AGO. MY HONDA HAD 160,000a 2005 AND RAN LIKE BRAND NEW SINCE THE DAY I GOT IT. I NEVER HAD FUEL PUMP ISSUES OR PCM ISSUES WITH HONDA. JUST YOUR NOMAL MAINTENANCE: TIRES, BRAKES, OIL CHANGES.
i CANT BELIEVE HOW DIFFERENT STANDARDS ARE FOR AMERICAN CARS OPPOSED TO IMPORTS.
I WAS RAISED TO BELIEVE THAT AMERICAN CARS BASICALLY LAST YOU 100,000 AND AT 100,000 THEY ARE READY TO HAVE ALL THEIR GUTS REPLACED OR JUNKED. tHEY SURELY WERE NOT WORTH MUCH AT THAT POINT.
IF ALL VEHICLES ARE THE SAME HOW COME ON AVERAGE SOMEONE CAN GET 200-300,000 OUT OF A ONDA OR TOYOTA WITH NO ISSUES BUT FORDS, CHEVY'S ETC ARE NUTORIOUS FOR ISSUES WITH EVERYTHING AT 100,000? HMM.. i CANT WAIT TO GO BACK TO HONDA.. REPLACIGN MY FUEL PUMP ON THE BROKEN EQUINOX i WAS SOLD BACK IN MAY. THEY HAD TO LIE TO SELL IT TO ME, THAT IS PRETTY BAD. i AM HOPING REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP ENDS MY NO START ISSUES AND DYING..I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE BATTERY, AIR INTAKE HOSES ON THE ENGINE, NEW TIRES, BRAKES, ROTARS AND NOW A TRANSMISSION FLUSH, AND FUEL PUMP. I HOPE TO GOD IT ISN'T THE PCM. I CANT AFFORD MY PAYMENTS IF I NEED ANYMORE REPAIRS. I THIK ALL 05-06 MODELS ARE LEMONS. THE FIRST THEY MADE SO THEY HAD TO WORK OUT ALL THE KINKS..
BY THE WAY, STILL TO THIS DAY, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A HONDA BROKEN DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD...... JUST A OBSERVATION ADN TRUST ME, I HAVE LOOKED.. I HAD A CIVIC FOR 6 YEARS.
