I had same problem with key not releasing. I had ignition replaced. still does it. Not happy at all. they said it was the key. I had to buy a new key for $30. Still does it. It would be nice if they new what they were doing, besides just trying to get more $ out of you!
From what I have read on here it is the shifter assembly that needs to be replaced. But who knows how long it will be before a new one starts having problems. Our car was not that old when we started having this problem. So I'm wondering if the shifter assembly wears out pretty fast.

I had that problem and found if you push the key in,and turn to the left before pulling it out, it wont get stuck.

i have been having the same issues with the wife's torrent. the key will not release after you turn the car off. i have done some research and took the steering column cover off and shifter covers off over the weekend. i tested the connectors and everything is working well. after a few minutes of listening and playing around with the shifter, i noticed there is a bar right below the shifter that activates the switch on the key release. i noticed that if i slam the shifter into park this little bar goes further into the shifter then it is supposed to, causing it not to activate the release switch. i have not priced the shifter or release switch, but i have found the culprit. for the time being i am using the manual release under the steering column with a zip tie to keep it activated. not the right thing to do, but it works for the time being until i can figure out how to permanently fix the shifter/ release switch issue. if you decide not to use the manual release switch put your foot on the brake and press the shifter knob a few times and that should make it set in place and activate the release switch in the shifter.

I've resolved this issue, cost...$0, well maybe the price of one zip tie. The vehicle: 2008 Chevrolet Equinox 3.4L. The problem: key will sometimes not release after shifting into park. The issue is with a small switch on the left side of the gear shift under the chrome shifter plate. The small switch tells the ignition the vehicle is in park and its ok to release the key. I took the switch out of its holder and zip tied it closed. I tucked the switch out of the way and put everything back together. Now the vehicle always thinks its in park. Works perfect, key come out every time.

Hope this helps someone else.

My key as well will not come out. Sometimes there is no problems but when there is, I turn off the radio, and sit and wait till I hear this click in the steering column, then it's been released and I can take the key out. I've had problems with the engine so GM put a rebuilt engine in two years ago. I'm still getting engine lamps on in warning. The dealership is very good at helping me but I believe that all Equinox cars are Lemons. Why else would a LA lawyer contact me saying that they are contacting all original owners.

I know what you mean about the clicking sound. We have to sit and wait sometimes up to 3 minutes but other times less. I suppose the clicking sound is trying to tell the key to release. Each time it clicks we think it is ready to come out so we will try it, but many times it will have to click several different times before it releases.

The click sound you describe is the key release at the ignition. This is triggered by the microswitch on the gear shifter handle, more specifically the button you press prior to shifting. If you use my method of using a zip tie to permanently close that switch then the key release at the ignition switch will always be in release mode and you will be able to get the key out every time. Since my repair in September the key has not gotten stuck once! For more info see my post seven up from this post. Good luck!

I have an 07 Equinox that I bought a year and a half ago with 72,000 miles on it. It has been a pain in the rear since I bought it. 1st oil change-Down 4, yes FOUR quarts of oil. No leaks, it just drinks it. Then they said I needed plugs and wires, and that would fix it. Um, no, it sure doesn't. Then came the stabilitrak issues. Lights always on for warnings. They re-set it, saying it was a fluke. Low and behold, my rear drive shaft goes out!@#$%$800 later, my freaking key is stuck in the ignition on accessories, and won't budge. Shifter button is stuck and won't move, everything is deader than a doornail, now, so I couldn't tell you if anything works. It seemed like when I started it it made a pop like noise and then didn't fully start. Key stuck, and here I sit without a vehicle again. I cannot afford this vehicle anymore, and the dealership that I have worked with and bought it from won't do ANYTHING! I still owe almost $11,000 on this truck!

HELP!!!!!!

Come on GM/Chevy-step up to the plate and take care of this crap!!!!!

I cant believe that a common sense thing like a dead batter preventing the key removal was thought of. I will NEVER buy a chevy ANYTHING as they are shitboxes.

This car was a gift....and even considering that, its a piece of shit and not worth it. This is the product of our newfound american ingenuity?

And we wonder why this country is rapidly turning into a piece of crap... look at GM engineering

Great news to hear that the key gets stuck from all of you. It is -18 degrees my wife tried to start by remote nothing put the key in nothing now the key won't come out the shifter won't come out of park and the nose is against the garage and won't be able to tow to the shop without breaking something else. First Chev in the last three vehicles...no car, no work, no money, big problem. FROZEN FINGERS AND NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks! My 2009 does the same thing as the key just will not come out at times and I have to wait. I believe there must be a relay or computer chip that is built into some type of sensor because you can hear it click and release sometimes. My 2004 Monte Carlo wouldn't start when you turned the key and you had to leave it in the on position for 7-8 minutes for the system to reset before it would start..... GM knows about the various issues but won't recall their products obviously, because it will cost them big dollars. They have a head gasket problem with all of the old Monte Carlos as well and every mechanic will explain it to you because antifreeze gets into the oil via the defective intake gaskets. And we wonder why folks buy foreign cars!!!!

My Equinox has been having this key problem for several months. It is totally unpredictable as far as I can tell. I have to be sure the wheel is straight, then I push the shift bar forward before I try to remove the key. One day this week I thought I was going to be stuck, and I needed to get into the school building and get to work. I had to restart the car twice, then it came out. It seems like from what I'm reading the dealerships don't know what to replace, so they just start changing out the ignition. Seems like that's not really where the problem is. I really like the car, but I'm concerned about getting stranded.

Ours is a 2007 and we are the original owners. The key has always eventually came out after waiting anywhere from a few seconds to up to 3 minutes. It can be frustrating when you just want to be able to park and get out of the car quickly. But we pretty much deal with it. The other thing I noticed is my passenger air bag does not always show it is on even when I am sitting in the seat. I have to move around and hope it will come on, other times it is fine. I don't know if any car is going to be perfect anymore. All the recalls over the years is a scary thing.

If you open the hood and remove the ignition fuses(probably 30 amps) that should work.
