I've been having the same issue with my key getting stuck. Sometimes I have to turn the car on & off 10 times while slowly moving the shifter from D to P. It's annoying and embarrassing, but at least you can still drive!

Today, I turned on the car and went to pull out of my driveway to find that my steering wheel wouldn't move an inch. We thought it was low on power steering fluid but it's not...we don't even have psf in the Equinox. The steering is controlled with the motor. We were told we needed an 80amp fuse because that most likely went out. Well that didn't work either! Now I'm sitting here with an extra fuse and a car that I can't drive, reading all of these posts about having to have the whole column replaced.

I'm not a very happy Chevy owner right now.

My first comment was August 19, 2010 and we are still dealing with the problem and this is September 16,2012. I have learned from someone on this board that if I wait, the key will eventually release. The only thing is it can take anywhere from less then a minute, to up to 3 minutes or so. I have had to sit in the car and just wait it out which can be frustrating at times. Thank God it has always released so far after waiting. You pretty much have to just wait it out :(

I'm so sorry you are having this problem. I hope this isn't related to the key issue. I really hope you can have someone figure out what is wrong, and I hope you get your car fixed soon so you will have your car to drive again.

Same problem just started with my 07 Equinox. Very frustrating. Any one else have issue with turn signals not automatically clicking back to the middle position? Get ready,$500 to fix. Also just had a check engine light issue. Good thing it's paid off, couldn't afford all of the upkeep.

The key won't come out, the brakes won't release the gear shifter and the locks don't work. I gave it a jump and still the same problem. This is not the first time the key wouldn't come out, but it is the first time the shifter wouldn't release. Cars stuck with the keys in it and its pouring outside. This is the worst time to own a AWD.

We have the same problem with our 2009 Chevrolet Equinox. It started all of a sudden last month. Park, place gear in Park, Motor turns off but ignition does not release the key and the battery, lights and everything is still on. So, we start it again, back up, pull back in and hope for release. Sometimes it works the first time, sometimes it takes over five minutes of pull in, back out, pull in...drive around the block...try to park again. Embarassing and I love the SUV...just want to know how to fix it. We have the Power Train warranty since we bought it new. They tried to see us the additional warrant that covered "power door locks" but we didn't think we needed that...hmmm, wonder if they already knew about this problem?

After putting the car in park and turning it off just sit there and do nothing. It can actually take anywhere from a few seconds to up to 3 minutes but it should eventually release. We used to do different things to get it to release until I read someone elses post where they said to just sit and wait and it will release, we found this to be true for us also. It can be frustrating I know but so far it has always released after a little waiting. I hope this helps you.

Well, I had a similar problem and initially I thought it was related to ignition or steering column. Key kept getting stuck more frequently so I paid more attention to what I was doing and it was that when shifting back to park, it wouldn't trigger the ignition keys to unlock. As others have said, it takes anywhere from few seconds to few minutes to get the keys released.
I took it to the dealer and explained the symptoms. The replaced the shifter assembly. The thing is made out of plastic and over time, the internals do not make proper contact to tell the car that the gear is set to park. Cost me $500!!! Well, this car is getting expensive to maintain...

Yeah can you get them to recall the crappy job they did 'sealing' the headlights too?!? I have been collecting moisture and now rusty water for about 18 months. They have both finally burned out and I have to drive with my high beams on at night because those are the only ones that work! No recalls so I have to eat the $350+ for new headlamps!!

The key stuck in the ignition is a Chevy thing. My mother had a '96 Blazer with the same issue. My husband had a '97 Camaro, same thing. My Mother in Law another Chevy in the 90's...yep you guessed it..SAME THING! I should've stuck with a Honda!

I think what concerns my husband and I is that if they replace the shifter, who is to say the next shifter doesn't do the same thing. Plus while changing the shifter something else could get messed up. That is why so far we have decided to live with it. It is frustrating though when you have to sit up to 3 minutes sometimes for the key to finally release. Thank God many times it releases under a minute. It is when it can take up to 3 minutes or so that is a real frustration.

2007 Equinox. Same problem with key not releasing. Paid over 800 to get it fixed six months ago and key stuck again! I use the button inside steering column to release it. I do hear a click after two minutes then it releases.

We are having the same problem with our 2008 Equinox, and as a gentleman posted in 2011, I found right under the steering collum a small square cover. Up inside is a plastic white switch. If you push the switch in your ignition will turn and the key will come out. Tomorrow I'm going to find out the purpse of the switch. The car runs fine with it pushed in and I believe the only purpose of it is so you can't turn your ignition all the way off and pull the key out when the vehicle is in gear... My-self, I can live with that.......

I had same problem with key not releasing. I had ignition replaced. still does it. Not happy at all. they said it was the key. I had to buy a new key for $30. Still does it. It would be nice if they new what they were doing, besides just trying to get more $ out of you!
