In Australia the peole simular to Americans, some only see what they want to see and believe in what they only what to believe in. I see the boss of GM said the Volt is coming at $40,000 in 2010 but Gm needs it now. Gm in the Usa has no one to blame for its problems but itself for taking its people for granted, a simular situation in Australia where GMH and Ford did nothing relying on brand loyality and public relation spin. They let the Japanese in the back door to there peril as a result Toyota dominates the local market outselling both Gm and Ford combined. Toyota Australia has just anounced it will assemble the Camry hybrid within 18 months. By the way Gm still has 6,800 dealers in USA. take care it is nice to disagree sometimes as the motor industry will never be the same again.

At any rate, why are you so negative about GM?

I hope you are right about the Volt as it seems it has a long way to go before it is sold in dealerships. It seems to still be in the prototype stage with untried engineering, reliability and performance. There seems a doubt on who will supply batteries. I heard they intend to use a supplier who has sold them batteries that leak in current GM models. I like Gm cars like you like Toyota I give credit where it is due. GM like most car companies are real spin doctors who only see good in there products no matter how bad they really are. I fact I was once pre delivery manager at a Holden dealership for about 3 years, funilly at the time my late father was the pre delivery manager for a Melbourne Toyota dealership, moving there from Ford Australia wher he did some engineering work on fucture models. At the time we both drove Japanese cars, as they suited us perfectly price wise, performance, reliability engineering a good overall package. In fact my dealer principle agreed the car I drove was far better than what they sold. My father and I were both able to buy Fords and Holden at very good prices but decided to drive our Japanese cars for in our opion they were far superior to our local cars, I still think so for there over all reliability performance/economy, equipment, pricing and engineering that still holds true. catch up soon David.

i believe gm has already done that...but i guess it depends on your vehicle...i bought a 2008 chevy cobalt a month ago and i just went on vacation...i was getting anywhere from 38 to 56 mpg on the way there and back...and the car is stock...nothing extra on it to help with gas mileage..gm has won hands down Tom Loy wrote: GM will have a winner on their hands if it gets better than 40 mpg. The people's demands are to blame for the poor mileage in cars today. Back in the 80s cars had less features and got much better mileage. My 84 Celebrity was roomy and got up to 30 MPG.

As I said, its funny how people say that America is 'discovering' low mileage cars, this is bogus. GM midsize sedans of the 80s got in the 30s, now Aveo, which is half the size of a Celebrity, is about the only car that can hit the 30s.

Early to mid-1990's Saturns could post over 40mpg if optioned correctly. I'm getting 38mpg in my 1995 SC2 that is well broken in with the 5-speed. Get an 85HP SL1 from 1993 and you'll get 43mpg all day long with the manual transmission on flat land.

My past GMs got really good mileage and were very comfortable and great performers.

Interestingly, the Impala and Grand Prix and Malibu all perform somewhat decent on the highway, but the small cars don't do as well. I personally got 31mpg in a 3.8L Grand Prix rental while a Chevy (Daewoo) Aveo will only muster 32mpg EPA with the auto transmission. See a problem with that?
