Ok, I bought a 2003 Cavalier barely two months ago with around 64,000 miles on it and it broke down on me one night. The guy at the dealership told me I needed to replace my fuel pump, while others have told me it may be some burnt out wires connected to the pump (I bought a new set for 11 bucks) or it could be the fuel filter or even just a fuse. Since I have no way of checking myself, based on where the car is, I just wanted to know: has that particular year's version of the Cavalier been known to have fuel pump problems? I mean I know I bought it USED but for the fuel pump to already be out and the car is only 3 years old is ridiculous! Anyone with any info, please help and thanks.

I have an 03 cavy and just got an oil change from regular to full synthetic well i filled up and ran out a full tank of gas in two days. Before oil change i was using a 1/4 tank a day changed fuel filter ,air filter and got an obd2 scan and nothing showed up on scan. Now call me crazy but it should not be doing that. everybody i talked to says they have no idea what it could be if somebody has an idea please let me know.

Erick,
If you have increased friction you will naturally use more fuel to run the car. Try adding Lucas oil treatment and see if that helps. If not go back to your old oil.

I have a 2003 Cavalier with 63,500 miles on it and the EXACT same thing happened! They say it's my fuel pump and it is going to cost me $660 to replace. Merry Christmas huh? I am wondering if this is a Chevy problem now. Gary B wrote: Ok, I bought a 2003 Cavalier barely two months ago with around 64,000 miles on it and it broke down on me one night. My daughter owns an 03 Cavalier with about 73,000 miles on it and the fuel pump went out. What's up Chevy? There appears there should be a recall on this.

Gary B I have a 2003 Cavalier that the fuel pump has went on as well. That was my Christmas gift. From the feedback I have received, since mine stranded me,this is a common thing and is rediculous. The only thing I can recommend is tap on the bottom of the gas tank with a rubber mallot...ONLY TO GET YOU HOME...this should get the car started. You will then have to replace the fuel pump. It cost me $400 for a GM brand replacement part. The aftermarket one was $179 BUT I have heard they are not as reliable as the GM ones. Depends on how much money you have to play with.

Grannyan Don't deal with dealers. Deal with someone independant. I just replaced a fuel pump in my 2003 cavalier (12/29/06) and it was $400. You may be able to have them locate the connectors you need on a car in a junkyard for under $100. Believe me I am a female who repairs vehicals and I play dumb when I am at the dealership. One day my bill to repair my car was over $800, after I revealed how mechanically inclined I really am, my bill went to $385! Best wishes!!!

I have an 03 cavalier and I am sorry for those who have already dealt with their problem(s). Now is there anyway that we could let GM know about this? I mean I've already read enough people that have had this problem in this forum and it's ridiculous. Either I am going to trade in this car before hell breaks loose, or GM would do something about it. What does it take for there to be a recall on a car? Don't they believe in financiality besides safety? Haha yea right. But come on, if we were stuck in a snowstorm, or hurricane or something, we would be stranded there thanks to GM. Im just curious how a recall happens.:)

I have a 2001 Cavalier, the same thing happened to me. Drove all the way to Houston from at Atlanta. Didn't crank the car for 2 days and it wouldn't start, had it towed to a shop. And was told it was the fuel pump. Cost me a $700, something that wasn't in my vacation budget. There seems to be something wrong with this picture.

I wouldn’t be afraid to go with a cheaper after market fuel pump being that GM's OEM parts are your trouble to begin with.
