I have a 2002 chevy cavalier coupe manual transmission. My husband went to put gas in it this morning after we changed out a dead battery last night. The car will not fill up, he got in about 2/10ths of a tank and the pump shut off and would not fill up the car. It's a gas station we frequent and we never had a problem there so it must be the car. I checked and there are no recalls. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Laura ,

My 2002 chevy cavalier is having the exact same problem. At first it was allowing me to put in a little gas at a time 5-10 dollars and that was at a slow pace. Now it wont accept gas period and its spitting it back at me. My uncle is a mechanic and he says its something called a fuel vent , which O'Reillys auto parts store comfirmed this. They have both told me that because its a newer car that you have to drop the fuel tank and replace it there. Hopefully this gives you some idea as to what it is thats wrong with it. But I to also have the same problem so any help you can give me email me back at Thomas_77_99@hotmail.com

i actualy had this problem too. i found that when i had my car running while trying to fill up it wouldnt let me put any gas in, the pump would immedeatly shut off. so i shut my car off when i fill it up. it really sucks shutting my car off to fill up with gas when it is snowing outside. oh well...

I had this problem too with my '02 Cavalier. I first shoved a skinny 18 inch broom stick handle; not sure if I went deep enough, I then shoved a coat hanger down the refueling hole and wahhlaaa! No problems since. Be careful though, when pulling the coat hanger out you must hold up
the little valve the pump handle goes in with your finger.

I have a 2002 Cavalier with 135,000 on the clock. I have witnessed this problem and another one, both related to the fuel tank vent solenoid mounted near the carcoal canister between the spare tire well and the fuel tank. The second incident resulted in just a 'check engine' light and a 'P440'(emissions evap code, I believe) trouble code. The part is real simple to remove and is a $30 item at the dealer. Both times I was able to pull the part out and confirm it was bad. The first time the solenoid was stuck closed thus the built-up pressure in the tank holding the check-valve closed on the filler tube (ie, no gas could get in). The second time it was stuck open.

Well I'm having the same problem get a bout 5 dollars in. I found the solonoid you are talking about. I have the part off now I'm gonna try and fill up with the part completely off to troubleshoot... if that is it. Does anyone know if the solonoid is normally energized or when it is energized? If it is not the solonoid does anyone have any suggestions where to head to next?
