My '97 Z24 is doing the same thing right now. It abruptly began starting hard (used to start right up). Then, it started bogging down when I would accelerate. Finally, it began occasionally stalling a few seconds after being started and would not restart until it sat for about 45 minutes. Now it just won't start at all. It turns over fine but will not start.

It started having a weird flickering in the electrical system around the same time the other problems appeared (all lights flicker rapidly). Not sure if it's realated or not.

I've seen some people say Fuel Pump, others say Crankshaft Sensor or Ignition Cylinder. Honestly I'm not even sure where to begin. If anybody has had similar symptoms and found a fix, I would love to hear about it.

I am having a similar problem with my 96 Cavalier, but rather than dying or not starting, it is running very rough, like it has a miss. My husband is fairly mechanically inclined and has checked all the usual culprits...plugs, wires, ignition wiring, fuses, etc. A guy at the local parts store said he found something about a recall on the ECM...the on-board computer, but when I called the dealership to ask them, they said that my car was not included in any recalls. Does anyone have any information or suggestions?

I see a number of posts on this subject and a lot of work has been done that wasn't needed.
When the theft system light goes on and flashes when you try to start the car and it starts and dies but will not start if you crank again but will start and die again if you shut off the key it means the computer needs to be reset. The problem arises from a disconnection of things like the gauge cluster etc without the battery being disconnected first.
The procedure is simple. Disconnect battery and set sit for about 1 minute disconnected. Reconnect and with the parking brake on attempt to start car. It will start and stop and the theft light will flash. Do not shut off ignition. Leave the car sitting with the ignition on for appox 15 minutes or until the theft light quits flashing. When the light quits flashing start the car as usual. Most times you then have to shut off key and do a normal start. I have done hundreds of these cars this way and for the first 20 I took to the dealer and he charged me $50 to $100 to do the same and they never took the car into the garage. I see a number of you have replaced a lot of parts. If you have replaced the Ecm etc I would recommend you put back the old one before you attempt to do this. The reset of a new Ecm usually does take a reset by the dealer.
Good luck all. A common problem for these cars. I am surprised it wasn't spelled out earlier in these postings.

help me please... i just bought a 97 cavalier, i noticed there is a wire run from the fuel pump relay to the ignition fuse which is making the fuel pump run all the time. i drove it for a week seemed fine then it died on me, pulled over crunk up check engine light came on and still was on. then started hesitating and dying more and more and now wont even run. crank up for a sec then dies have to turn key off then back on same thing. i can give it gas while cranking and revs then dies. replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump relay to see if i could get rid of the wire but i cant fuel pump doesnt work unless wire is connected to the fuel pump relay and the ignition fuse. it does push gas out of the filter when key is on havent checked at the fuel pressure regulator but noticed a little discolor around it and smells like gas so i know i need a new one of those but any one have any ideas on what i should do next?

Hello,

Saw your post concerning late 90s Cavaliers shutting off after 1-2 seconds. I replaced my key lock cylinder because the old
Key would not turn. Now Iím having the shut off problem. Iíve tried all the suggestions with no help. Disconnected the bat then
Reconnected after 2 minutes and tried to start which it dies but left the key on since thatís suppose to reset the computer.

The new lock assy. Said a similar thing leave the key in the run position for 10 minutes and that would reprogram things but none
Of that stuff works.

Whatís your plan? email me at pkssreid@comcast.net

Thanks

hi i have a 97 cav basicly doing same thing but it wont start u could pump the gas and it would start but this all happened i changed the entire exhaust system and the catic coverter started over heating changed it again and O2 sensor still same i let it idle afor an hour and came back it shut off now it doesnt run again did pull couple sensors off while it was running at time to test if it helped or not, but now the theft light is on

it doestn flash like everyone talks about just stays on solid i know when i was starting it for llong periods of times the dash lights all flashing on and off at the same time, dunno if that matters but i tried all the tricks minus replacing ignition cuz mine doesnt show up flashing or going away theft system

I have a 99 cavilier 2.4 engine that when started it shuts off and if you try to restart it will start. Has also stalled while driving a couple of times. We have replaced spark plugs, coil boots, coil housing, ignition module, fuel filter. Took it to the dealer, no codes show up, only thing they found was a plugged fuel filter. Engine idles fine, doesn't make any noise and runs smooth. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

ohh it is a commen problem , all you have to do is to change yor ignition swirtch ( or maybe the ignition wires ), to be sure before you buy it just put you switch in on postion then go and start your car from the starter it self ( by connecting the terminal on the starter )located between the engine and transmission if it is workes then you know it is the switch .

if not email me as i dont i was just browsing in thes website and may never come back again

My Problem: When I Turn The Key, The Engine Will Turn Over, And Will Sometimes Run For 1-3 Seconds (if At All), And Then Shut Down. When It Shuts Down, You Have To Turn The Key Back Off, And Then On Again To Get It To Try To Start.
At First, None Of The Dashlights (including The Gear Shift Indicator Light) Would Come On. Since Replacing The Electrical Part Of The Ignition Switch, The Lights Now Come On.
We Have Replaced The Battery And Had The Alternator Tested. Have Replaced The PCM (powertrain Control Module), Still Nothing.
This Is My Only Car, my budget is very tight, and Any Help/advice You May Have Will Be VERY Appreciated!!
Thanks In Advance!
