OK 2 things here. The newer cavalier and sunfires 2000ish had a problem with the tail light bulb sockets and had to be replaced with the pigtail and such.

As far as the 90-91 turn signal brake light issue I must agree that it's most likely the multifunction switch (turn signal switch). The third brake light circuit doesn't go through the switch thats why it still works. I have seen this sooooo many times. I am a gm tech

I have a 2005 chevy trailblazer. The brake lamps are not working. The tail lights, turn signals, hazzards, and third brake light all work fine. I also already checked the fuse. Could it really be that both bulbs burned out at the same time? Any suggestions?

i had same problem thats how i found this site.i temperarly fixed mine the redneck way,my 3rd brake light was working so i pulled both sockets going to 3rd light down unhook car battery of course, leave bulbs in pulled white and black wire upart took razer knife scrape wire so metal showing not cutting the wire, but if you want i guesse you can then use wire nuts, clean spot on both wires on each socket and do the same to trunk lid brake lights you shouldent have to pull sockets out on the left and right ones then cut piece of automotive wire around 3 feet long attach black wire to black and white to green do same on otherside make shore you tape wires good.again this aint the right way or safe way but it worked for me

I have a 2001 Cavalier and my turn signals, running lights, and 3rd brake light work just fine too. But when I press on the brakes, they don't light up! This is so frustrating and it is nice to know that there are so many other Cav's having the same problem....I am asking all of my friend's who also own one to see if they can help and my brother who is a car genius. I will let you guys know if I figure it out!

Socket/Bulb Thang!! The problem is that the socket has a short shelf life...over time the socket will melt into the the bulb resulting in a bad connection with the metal parts(those little wires on your bulb). That's why if you wiggle it sometimes it will come on and stay on until you hit a bumb or slam the hood then you signal will start to flicker fast as if the bulb is out! I KNOW THIS FOR FACT BECAUSE I REPLACED ONE SIDE LAST YEAR AND NOW ANOTHER TOMORROW!:)

We are having brake light problems with our 1991 Cavalier Coupe as well. The brake lights do not illuminate when the petal is pressed. The parking lights and turn signals, and third brake light work just fine. We have checked the fuses and changed the bulbs. Can someone please shed some light on this issue. Thanks

I have a 90 1500 and I have a very similar problem. When my lights are on my tail lights aren't, and when I turn my signals on they are very slow, and then when i put my truck in reverse (manual) the tail lights, license lights, and reverse lights come on, and when I take it out of reverse, the whole back goes out. All of the bulbs are fine as well as the fuses. I even took every bulb out of the front and back and checked them on a meter. God help me!

I have a 2003 cavalier and I am having a problem with my rear passenger brake and signal light. It's always going out, sometimes the bulb is blown and sometimes not. I just switched out the bulb and it started smoking and the bulb shattered. Any ideas what could be the problem?

HELLO,
I TOO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. BUT I AM GOING TO TRY TO CORRECT IT TODAY. TRY TO GET THE FLASHER UNIT OR THE FLICKER. THE PART NUMBER EP27. THIS IS LIKE A FUSE THAT CONTROLS BREAK LIGHTS AND THE TAIL LIGHTS (SIGNALS) ITS LOCATED RIGHT ABOVE THE ACCELERATOR AND THE BRAKES. FOR A 2001 CAVY. BUT I AM NOT A 100% SURE. MY BF AND I ARE STILL LOOKING INTO TO IT. TODAY WHEN WE TRY TO FIX IT AND IF IT WORKS THIS SHOULD HELP YOU FIX YOUR CAR ISSUE AS WELL.

Cavalier 2002....Went to my 4000 mile oil change, told me my signal lights were out, changed fuse nothing. Went to change the bulbs and noticed a crap load of corrosion, cleaned the sockets with a small piece of brillo and such, appears to be working now. Not a "car guy". Did not know about the rapid flashing of the ind light meant they weren't working til today. Rust/Corrosion appears to have been the prob.

Toyota Cavalier tail light just installed on 2003 Chevy Cavalier. Wiring done exactly to the wiring diagram of a Toyota Cav. However, my brake lights will not work when the pedl is pressed. Everything is kosher though. . .bulbs, ground, fuses. Unsure of what to try next.

I have a 2001 Chevy Cavalier and the front right signal will not flash although the light is on. The blinker on the dash will flash like there is a bulb out. Any suggestions?

I have a 00 cavalier and recently had no brake lights, but tail, reverse, and signal lights worked fine. My husband read the postings on this page and went thru each step that everyone suggested. When he got to the multi function switch step and took apart the steering column to get to it, he noticed that something in the multi function switch mechanism had come undone, so he snapped it back together and I had brake lights again! This forum saved me a trip to the mechanic! I hope this helps someone else out there.

If the 3rd brake light works and others dont. Replace the pressure switch connected to the upper portion of the brake pedal. If blinkers, or blinkers and ALL brake lights are not working. It is the multi function switch in the steering column. I am a mechanic. I replace these all the time.
