Hi Im having problems with my wifes 2003 chevy cavalier. Her heat will only come out of the vents that would face you. The front window defroster and floor heater controls will not work. I looked behind the dash board and noticed that the cable that controls the vents has a lot of play in it. but I have no clue where that cable runs too. Its been snowing out and it sucks not having any defrosters, the window just keeps fogging up, I have to keep the heat cranked to try to defrost the windshield. Does anyone know where that cable that controls the vents leads to so i can see if it broke or fell off. Thank you!!

On my 2000 the damper controls in the heating system are controlled by vacuum. I found that I was not getting any vacuum to the controls. What I found was a small black vacuum hose had come off the nipple located on the back side of the motor/intake manifold under the hood. It fell off again a couple of days later so this time I placed a small wire tie on it, with just enough pressure to prevent it from falling off but yet not so much as to distort the hose and cause a leak around the nipple.

Do you have to take the dash apart? In what order do you have to take the dash apart? Does the part that goes around the speedometer just pry off? How long is the cable? Where does it end? Has anyone replaced this cable? Thanks for the info.

I had the exact same problem with my cavalier. Brought it to the dealer and said that some sound dampening foam jammed in between the door that makes the heat go to the defroster, and it snapped the cable. They said it was a heck of a task to get at that cable. Had to take the whole dash apart. Luckily it was covered under warrantee, so the only loss to me is not having a car for a day while it was getting fixed.

I just had this same problem with a 2004 Cavalier. The heat would only come out of the AC vents - nothing from the floor vents or defroster. Dealer charged $203.00 to install a new cable. My had gotten "kinked"

Heard the kinked cable story and I also heard the dash has to be removed, which is why I have survived without defrost or warm feet for three years now. Might change this week, but we'll see what the estimates say.

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. TAKE A PAIR OF NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS AND PUSH THE CABLE BACK TOWARD IT'S HOUSING. IF YOU CAN GET IT TO MOVE, IT WILL CHANGE POSITION TO THE FLOOR AND DEFROST POSITION. WEIRDLY, IF I GO TO FAR TO ALL DEFROST,
THE A/C COMES ON. THIS DOESN'T COST A DIME!!!!

Can you be a little more specific as far as what you mean by pushing the cable back towards its housing?

Just checked it out and I tried this method. My cable was really kinked...but I was finally able to slide a lot of it back up the housing like you said.

The result for now is that I get defrost, feet and dash blowers going, but if I change the setting, the cable slides back out of the housing and wont go back in enough for defrost to come back, but feet appears to be here for good.

Way cheaper than the alternative, so I guess my car will be stuck with all 3 blowing at the same time.

Thanks for making the internet great. I have a 2000 Cavalier too - nearly 700,000 km, so I didn't want to spend $. After, reading your post, I went out to look for a vacuum line. Found one pulled apart right behind the brake fluid reservoir. Hooked it up, and now have everything working again. Thank you very much.(Before reading your post, I was going to start pulling the dash out)
