fuel pump is fried 9 times out of 10 when you run the tank dry you fry it right then and there. as far as checking this out when you turn the key if you dont here that pump ingage you know its gone. other than that take a volts meter and check for voltage at the pump connector and turn the key and see what you get.

Same thing happened to me. All the crap at the bottom of your fuel tank got sucked into and clogged the filter when you ran out of gas. change your fuel filter and you should be okay.

look at the fuel pump. it could have burnt out when she ran it out of gas.

Put gas in it, turn key on and check for the "hum" of the pump priming. If you dont hear it, take a rubber mallet and give the bottom center of the tank a fiew good whacks. Turn the key and listen for "hum". If it kicks on after all that, the sending unit may be shorted. Repalce the fuel pump.

i did this and couldn't get it started after putting over 5 gallons of gas, so i dowsed the air cleaner with gas (not dripping wet) started right up and stayed running no problems since

My son has run his 2001 Cavalier out of gas several times since the gas prices got so high. Each time it was very difficult to start; but ran fine after it finally started. Obviously, part of the she solution was to put gas in it; but it required a significant amount of ags and was still very difficult to start. There must be something unique about the fuel system design that inhibits fuel from getting to the engine once the pump gets a little air in it.

The hard-start is mainly caused by "airlock" problem. That is: when the engine sucks up the last drop of gas right before it stops, it clears the entire gas supply line and it's being filled with air instead of gas. After you put gas in the tank and try to restart it, it's quite difficult to purge all the air out of the gas line and that's why it's wanting to start but not quite! What you can do is to disconnect the soft plastic air intake hose from the air filter housing. While one person is cranking the engine, have another person sparingly spray engine starting fluid into the engine intake hose opening (on the engine side). That should fix it.

You know when I first seen this, I thought wow this guy's a comic, lol. Man you were absolutely correct!!! Apparently, these cavaliers have to have at least 5 gal of gas to start. I've been working on cars my entire life and have never heard of this. So, I have to thank you for your comment and making me try it. Thanks again

I have a 2000 cav 2.2 engine no problems with until last night it died entering my work parking lot. Sounded like I ran out of gas, but it registered between E and 1/4. The gas light did not come on. I couldn't get it to start again. Towed it home. Added another 5 gals of gas, switched the Fuel pump relay with the A/C relay. Now it will start but won't stay running. disconnected the air intake as instruced above and shot sparingly the engine quick start. It try to run, but quickly stopped again as if it ran out of gas. I 1st ckd to see if I could here the pump engage and you can. I am very familar with this sound, but it now sounds "off" kind of gurgly?? What should I check next fuel pressure regulator, filter or could my fuel pump still be burnt.
