Every time the key sticks in the ignition, I loose 1st and overdrive.??? Then the key will become unstuck a week later and I'll have 1st and overdrive again?? WTF??!! Gremlins?

I Bought a 97 Chev s10 in 2002, and within a year the key/cylinder had to be replaced, then again in 2012, and now in 2013. from what the transmission shop said there is a common problem with the electrical in the steering column.
In my case there is no voltage to the transmission so the truck wont get out of 4th grear. The wires from the auto center console shift lever broke in 2012 so I couldn't get the key out, once I replaced the connector from the shift lever and connected to old wiring harness, I was able to remove the key.

Does anyone have detailed info on the steering colum electical issues ?

Thank you, that worked but unfortunately I have to do it each time to get the key out. Do you have any idea what I need to replace?

That works....
To try it out start the truck, put it in something other than park and turn the key off. The key will not turn all the way to off so it can come out. Remove the plastic plug from the lower steering column shell, put something long and thin up in the hole until you feel the switch and it presses in, now the key should turn to off and come out.
Thanks for the tip, I saw that plug when I changed my ignition switch and didn't think much of it. This is the 3rd ignition switch I have gone through, all AC Delco parts. The original and the 2nd one would intermittently not supply power to the tans, throw a code and only allow the trans to run in 3rd. The 3rd and current switch is intermittently not allowing the key to come out. These ignition switches on these trucks suck big time, lucky they only take about an hour to swap out and cost about $75 for the OEM AC Delco part.

I have put 4 ignition switches in my 1997 chevy blazer. Ity ussually corrected the many little clitches but this time it did not correct my problem cannot get car out of park clicking in the steering wheel. Im going to replace the brakelight switch this will be the 2nd in 2 yrs. Any other ideas also my blower doesnt work tryed a new relay and blower motor, also a resistor......I am also looking for the BCM body control module cannot find.

just happened to me today in my 97 blazer; googled this site & got the answer: popped off the cover to that area & used a small skinny screwdriver to get the key out. I put the key back in to see if I could get it to start but no go. had to use the screwdriver again to get the key out. this was at 9pm tonigh & temps in the teens here in kansas city. so QUESTIONS: is my my battery dead? do I need to get a new switch. btw, the batter is only a few months old. anybody please help. thank you
