Blazer 4 wheel drive problem

I have a 1996 S-10 Blazer and every time I push the button for 4 wheel drive it skips over it and never goes into 4 wheel drive mode. Has this happen to anyone before? What does this mean? Can I fix it myself? Is it expensive?

it has happened to me a couple of times, the best thing for me is to disconnect the battery for about ten minutes. it only happens if i try to engage it in reverse. hope this helps!

I have a 2000 blazer and all my 4 wheel drive lights come on and stay on. Then the service 4 wheel drive light comes on and the other lights go off. Can anyone help?

The same thing going on with my 96. Had the transfer shift motor replaced and still does the same thing, cost a bundle to have the trans takin out of 4 wheel at local garage, it went into 4 wheel with new transfer motor but would not dissengage. garage said blown fuse, replaced fuse an dissengaged. the next time same thing, would not go into 4 wheel.

Freddy! Your the man! I just fixed my Blazer that was stuck in 4 wheel drive lo. I unhooked the battery, hooked it back up and wala. It reset it self! Thanks for sharing this info! Michigan

Check the 4wd Transfer Case Electonic Module in the right kick panel, passenger side, for corrosion. Where the module plugs in is the corrosion. This is a common problem in S10 Blazers. If posts are broken or burnt they can be replaced. A new dealer module costs $485, used $150-$250. You can fix it yourself for nothing.

i have 2000 chevy blazer before i would try to press the button for 2wheel hi but it would flash and go into 4hi. then i would press the 4x4 button and it would stay there but now all the lights are not comming on and the service 4wd is on permanatly. any suggestions

i have a 1997 blazer, and every summer the 4x4 actuator rips, and no one can figure it out, can any one help me...... thanks...

I have a 2002 GMC ZR2 that won't go into 4 wheel drive, when I push 4HI both 4HI and 4LOW will start flashing. This last about 10 seconds and then it will kick back into 2HI. I've tried the battery thing and that doesn't help. Anybody have any suggestions?

I have a 2004 blazer. It will not go to 4wh high.
When you push 4wh high, light flashes and it goes back to 2wh high. when you push 4wh low it works.

Garage says it is the motor, but I do not agree.
Any ideas???

Frank, I tried unhooking the battery cables for ten minutes like Freddy said and it did work. Also a mechanic at a GM dealership told me they've changed a ton of those 4-wheel drive buttons, all three of those buttons are built into one switch. The switch cost about $80.00. I try the battery cables first. Good Luck!

My 96 Blazer does the same thing and i found out if i get the actuator from the junk yard and its a O.E general motors actuator It lasts about 3 years. for some reason the after market ones just aren't strong enough for the vacuum that the truck produces. hope this helps

i had that same issue with 01 just by happen stance earlier this morning while checking fluids i noticed a vacume line disconnected up near the firewall reconectted it and i'm back in business. the line is back of engine compartment close to the firewall about center. there are two lines plugged into a plastic houseing with two hose nipples and two electical plugs the bottom hose nipple was my problem.good luck hope this helps

all i did was unhook the battery and waited abot 10 minutes and hooked it back up. Mine still goes in great.

My 1997 zr2 4wd has a problem with both HI and LO. You push the buttons and the light stay on like they are engaged but nothing.

Seems to me like no one read there owners manual. To get your truck into 4wd low gear "First put the truck in neutral, then press button, then gear into park, then into drive or reverse" From 4wd low to 4wd high
"Repeat" But press the 4wd high or 2wd button.
Now most of you should be able to just press your 4wd high from the 2wd and it should work.

my 1998 blazer is stuck in 4 wheel and it wont go into 2 wheel!!! It will switch from 4HI to 4LO, but jus makes a clicking noise and the light flashes when i try to put it in 2HI. i disconected the battery and plugged it back in but that didnt work. Any suggestions???

I have a 2001 blazer. I went to use the 4FWD and the lights would blink on the switch. Reading from several responses on websites, I found that it was a broken vacuum line at the switch centered on the firewall that goes to the actuator that engages the front axles. The actuator is under the battery support plate. The way the vacuum line was run made for a very tight bend at the switch on the firewall and that is where it cracked, I moved it to eliminate the bend. With stupid problems like this, no wonder the US auto industry is struggling!!!!
