2004 Chevy Aveo5 won't go into 3rd or 4th gear.

Hi, we have a 2004 Chevy Aveo5, 1.6L automatic, bought it second-hand about a month ago for my daughter's graduation gift! Only minor issues to fix when we first got it, brakes, caliper, & top pan gasket. She would have first, second and third gear but would hesitate a bit going into 3rd, we has a friend do a DTC scan on her and came up with these codes: P0106 - Absolute Pressure Sensor performance, P0122 - Throttle Position Sensor Low Voltage, P0452 - Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Low Voltage, P0700 - Transmission Control Module and P1122 Throttle Position Sensor Intermittent Low Voltage...this past weekend she lost 3rd and only goes in 1st and 2nd, won't engage into 3rd just revs like crazy as if she's in neutral!! Also, when you start the car, she revs up and down as if your foot is on the gas pedal! Replaced Throttle position sensor and still no difference...was told that many "options" that it can be I don't even know where to start again on diagnosing this problem without spending a fortune at the dealership!!! Please Help!!

To KittiKat

What has happened is the computer has detected an issue with the transmission. It has placed the transmission into "limp" mode essentially only allowing you to utilize your 1st and 2nd gears (allowing you to get home or to a shop). The computer/transmission does this to keep your vehicle from sustaining any more damage than needed.

I believe if you replaced your Transmission Control Module it 'might' resolve the problem and allow it so come out of "limp" mode.

I would also recommend checking your transmission fluid and well as your transmission filter? If your transmission is low on fluid or thick due to old age it may cause shifting problems

I would like to clarify that I am not a mechanic, nor a certified service tech. Regardless, I am still providing some insight in hopes that this 'might' help resolve or diagnose your stated issue.

I will say that even though the Aveo was build with less than quality parts, just like every vehicle with proper care and preventative maintenence it can be substained for a very long time. If something is ever acting different or you feel a new 'vibration' by all means take it to a autoshop. Most often they can give you an idea of what it may be just from a description. Don't hesitate to mention some things that may be on your mind or any inclinations you may have as to why the issues are happening. Every little bit helps when it comes to diagnosing car troubles. Unfortunately multiple issues present similar symtoms.

Thanks for your reply Will, and any suggestions are more than welcome, lol! But today, after installing a new Throttle Position Sensor yesterday, and taking off the Idle Air Control Valve and cleaning it up we started her up and she worked perfect!! Better than ever actually, for about 20 mins or so :( She went from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and even overdrive perfectly, then she started revving again and wouldn't go into 3rd again. Just checked her out again and perfect again, we're thinking it's a stupid sensor (one of god knows how many is on this car!!!)or the Idle Air Control Valve.....

i was informed that the transmission control module must be flashed so it can sync with the motor, my car won't go into overdrive either. So how does a person Flash the TCM, to sync with the motor? do i have to go to a transmission repair shop?
