Beware of this vehicle with only a 60,000 mile suggested timing belt replacement period. My 2004 Aveo threw the timing belt at 62,000 miles trashing the engine. Chevrolet will not stand behind this vehicle if it has a premature failure!

That sucks! but they say 60k and you went 62 so they will screw you for that one!

One would think wiith Toyota,Honda and other foreigns, Chevy would kiss butts to keep business, but they dont.I hear more complaints about how Gm treats customers, than the problems with the vehicles.Problems happen,it is just how its dealt with and GM sucks at customer service!

I have just under 65k on my 04 Aveo (bought vehicle from a used car dealer), I called dealer to schedule recommend 60k belt change and the service writer advised me there is a service bulletin about this:

# TSB #060601021 -- TIMING BELT INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, WORN, WEAR.*KB (NHTSA ID #10020843, OCTOBER 01 2006)

The bulletin states Chevy will buy the belt up to 55k miles (customer pays labor). However, my service writer suggested I call Chevy customer support at 800-222-1020 and see if they might work with me. Chevy called my dealer and got the field service rep involved and they offered to buy the belt. So in my case Chevy went above and beyond. As long as my motor doesn't explode between now and my appointment, I hope to be in good shape.

I have a 2007 Aveo with only 7,000 miles on the car. From the first day i drove it,the seering wheel shakes at about 55-60mph.also when i go over a speed bump,or any slight rise in the road i can hear a grinding or popping sound from the right fron wheel.

I have a 2004 Aveo with 165,000 miles.(I have a 160 mile per day commute.) any way I can't worn people enough to change the timing belt...i just threw a 2nd one because of my stupidity. I knew after I had to put a new engine in at 75,000 that i needed to have it changed at 60,000. but noooo i waitd, didn't have the time to leave it at the shop to get the timign belt changed. Now my car is sitting at the shop for the last 2 day and will be having a value job done for the next week.
my mechanic friend said chevy is suggesting the timing belts be changed at 40,000.
DO IT OR AT LEAST HAVE IT CHECKED AND SAVE YOURSELF $1000.00.

and on another note I had the same shaking problem at 60ish mph, i took it for a simple alignment and the problem is fixed.

My daughters timing belt broke on her 2004 Aveo. I've taken it apart and found this was the problem after spending $250 thinking it was the starter. Anyway, I can't find a "how to" book on how to change it. Can anybody make a suggestion on where I can get this kind of proper information? Also, a mechanic told me that I would have to rebuild the head. Why?

04 aveos have plastic thermostat housings, and once it blows, the replacment part from GM.......... is aluminium. Now thats news everyone can use.If you have not replaced this part by 70,0000KMS, keep a close eye on your heat gauge

My timing belt just went on my 04' Aveo at 52K miles, obviously short of the recommended 60k check. I had my local garage tow and replace the timing belt for $367.88. After replacement, they discovered that because of the belt failure, 3 valves became bent and the engine has lost all compression. Hence I need a new engine. Today I called Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 and they told me they needed to have a GM technician diagnose the problem before they would offer me any 'moneteary assistance'. They wanted me to pay the additional towing and diagnosis fees before they could 'determine' if 'monetary assistance' would become available. My first question was:

If they deem the problem (bent valves) to be the fault of the timing belt failure, how much 'assistance' would be offerred?

They could not answer this for me. So looking at the odds that I would get screwed even more, I declined thier so-called offer of assistance.

The bottom line is: Chevey knows they have a problem with their Daewoo supplier's timing belts and they basically don't give a damn. Who cares if the customer paid $14k for a supposed 'quality' product and is looking at losing $4k because of a stinking $15 timing belt.

Chevrolet - this will be the last car I purchase from you!!

Class Action lawsuit? My 04 Aveo is not starting and am leaning towards the timing belt issue. Sounds like a lot of problems with the 04's at 60,000 miles. Taking it to the delear on Monday, will let you know how it turns out.

Just had my timing belt fail. had it towed to a stealership . Diagnose the problem $200 . Deal calls me the next day and tells me I have 2 options. They can tear the engine head off and replace any valves bent etc etc . After this extreme it could be possible that the valves punched holes in the pistons heads . Exchange the engine at around a cost of $5200 . I still owe 4500 on the car. I bought the car used and never ever recieved any notice of the need to replace timing belts at such milage. My opioun of this junk car is not to be shared but i would gues it wouln,t be hard to figure it out ...

there is only one company on earth that should should be selling timing belts and thats gates!!!
the part number for the aveo gates timing belt is #T335 and for the tensioner #T43039.

gm has screw everybody over by buying cheap goodyear or dayco timing belts, these belts are really designed for a single cam vehicle from 1980s, not the newer high compression dohc engines.
