I just bought a 02 from a dealer and the back window
plastic casing was cracked in the lower passenger side corner. the dealer is replacing it. Hope it
doesn't happen often.

I used the midgate feature for the first time on my '02, and my window was broke in the same place as yours! I am the original owner, so I know it's way past warranty. I put the window back in, and it hasn't leaked yet (lol). I'm curious, did the dealer tell you how much this was costing him to replace? just wondering.....thanks.

$780, to replace.. a auto glass shop gave me some window caulk. i am going to take out the window and try to fill in the crack and let it dry so that it is not sticky and see if that will fix it.. I just bought a 02 avalanche and did not notice the crack until a few days later so it was just my tough luck..

I bought my 02 Avalanche brand new and of course the warranty has expired. I recently visited the dealer where I purchased it and asked if this has been a problem for others. He related that he has not seen it before and it is not a recall problem. He also stated that I could buy a new one for almost $800.00. It is just the plastic molding that has cracked not the window. I am still looking for a place to repair it. No luck so far.

Boy I hope this doesn't become a problem with my '02. Right now the only problem I have with the glass in the back is that it squeeks and groans when I go over bumpy roads. I do have a problem with my dome lights however. They no longer come on and when the doors are opened the "cargo" light on the dash comes on. Looks like it's time to go to the dealer and find out what has shorted. This minor problem is not enough to make me dissapointed with my truck however....I love my Avalanche!

I had the smae problem. Took it to my dealer and they replaced it. Then about a month later turned on my rear window defroster, the whole window shattered and the metal tabs for the defroster seperated from the glass. I am now meeting with the factory rep to discuss what they are going to do about it.

I have a tint shop, and we had the misfortune to tint a 2002 Escalade EXT (just a pricier Avalanche). A week or so after we finished the owner came back to say he had "discovered" a crack in the lower passenger corner of the frame around the mid-gate glass (just like Niel in Calgary). At first I was going to replace it, until I saw posts like those here. Now I am determined to fight. Any ideas? How many more of these defective glasses are out there?
By the way, for Bryan, the wholesale cost on the glass is currently $545 here in Mississippi.

I have a 2003 Avalanche and a crack suddenly appeared in the plastic frame around the mid-gate glass on the driver's side. The window hadn't been out in months. It doesn't leak (so far. Obviously by judging all the other postings this is a common problem! Other than that the vehicle has been great. I would buy another one.

Hey "Kip." Evidently you never intended to send the glass. I have sent a complaint with all our emails and the money order information to the FBI internet fraud division. I also alerted the owneres of this website. Of course, if I am treating you unfairly, just let me know, by sending the glass.
Message to ather posters and lurkers:
Don't be a dummy like me. If someone wants a money order, just tell them where to go.

I bought an 02 about a month ago and didn't notice a crack in the frame when I bought it, and took it out a few times. Tonight I noticed a crack in the lower driver's side corner. no signs of leaking yet, but the lower corner is cracked (frame only) and about a 1/2 inch chunk gone near the top driver's side corner

This was a problem that they had back in 02 and most were replaced at the dealers..I had mine done a week after I had it and it's been fine since.. 6/01/01

Yes you can take the middle bar out by looking on top there is a little tab that you have to push in then just turn the handle...

Thanks Glenn

For all out there in avalanche world. This back window cracking is widespread and the dealership doesn't want to recall it because almost all of the 02-03 back windows do break. If anyone finds a cheaper way to fix this problem let us all know. Thanks

I bought an '03 in May of last year and I just noticed the same crack evberyone talking about. Dealer and GM customer services say I'm out of luck for many reasons. They issued at least 5 TSB's (techical service bulletins) on this issue with no recalls.

If anyone is willing to take a photo of their defective window and send it to me at [email protected] I'd appreciate it because I'm about to raise some hell with GM and need all the documentation I can get.

Our truck is a 2002 we bought it new we have the same problem they will not cover the window under our major guard warranty plan because they claim it's a glass problem and glass is not covered. It is a cracked frame what gives! Also be aware there is a recall on ABS cylinders but no recall notices were sent out at low rates of speeds you will have little to no braking power when they defect. We have had 2 replaced so far. I am on the phone right now with chevy over dust plates that rot out around your rear brakes which have caused my emergency brakes not to work the rear axel needs to come out to replace these things a $600 dollar job. It is no wonder chevy sales are doing so poorly. I am sad to say chevy trucks are not built like rocks. They are built to rot.
