My 2005 Avalanche is having a problem starting. When I turn the key it will turn over but wont start. When I try the second time it will start every time. Anyone, have any ideas as to what could be causing this.

The truck has 97,000 miles on it.

Check the fuel pressure, sounds like you have a fuel pump going south and not retaining pressure in the fuel line.

Did you ever find the problem with this? Mine has been doing this for 8 months. I have replaced the battery. I can't believe that it could be the fuel pump. The avalanche runs excellent except for the not starting on the first time. I also noticed that it starts on the first time and quickly when the temp is about 40-50 deg F. Under that temp it takes the 2nd start and above that temp it takes the 2nd start. Any help what you found would really be apprieciated. I also was getting my traction control light at the beginning of this but have noticed that it has been off for quite a while now.

Yes, it was the fuel pump. If you don't have one already, go to any auto parts store and purchase a cheap fuel pressure gauge. If you look under the hood, on top of the engine, there is a rail (either regtangular or circular, depending on where your Avalanche was built) this is the fuel rail. attach your gauge to the fuel rail and then turn your key to the on position. The gauge should read a CONSTANT 60psi while in the on position. If it spikes and slowly drops down the electric motor in your fuel pump is bad and need a new pump.
Don't get cheap when you get the new fuel pump. Tell whoever you take it to, that you want the new sending unit to go with it. If you re-use the sending unit you currently have your gas gauge may or may not give you the right fuel level. Not a problem that I would want to have on any of my vehicles.
I hope this helps!

I'm at work right now and can't really check it but will soon. It is just hard for me to see how it could be the pump. Why in cooler weather does it start up immediately? I have tried to turn the ignition on and off several times and it still has to crank over before it will start. If it was the fuel pump wouldn't it build pressure and start? Your probably correct it just doesn't seem feasible to me that it could be that. And if it is then it will just have to stay like that cause I'm not going to spend that much money on a fuel pump when it is running just fine.

I also have a 2005 avalanche, but mine has 158,000 on it. Mine just started today it wouldn't start on the first try but it did on the second.About 2 week ago my gas gauge started up I would have a half a tank of gas in it but the gauge was saying I was on empty then it would go up to a half a tank again. Have no idea what it would be

It is gonna be the fuel pump. The solder connections are breaking down. It will get to the point if it hasn't already that your fuel guage will only work in the forward drive positions. Make sure and change fuel filter when you change the pump or you will be doing it all over again in the near future.

I have this issue now. The difference is I believe my issue is my ECM. Fuel pump was replaced not too long ago and still sounds strong when I turn the key to (ACC) accessory... My truck sounds like it will start but kills the engine immediately. I thought it could have been the starter kill relay on the alarm system but sometimes it tries to run but RPMs sometimes don't balance out. A faulty starter kill relay shouldn't cause issues in the actual running of the engine.

I had the same sporadic issue with a 2001 Dodge Durango for 3 weeks and once I replaced the computer ($900 later) we were back in business. My Avalanche's ODB points to a faulty Mass Airflow Sensor & MAP. Replaced the map sensor 2 weeks ago and it worked until now. Tested the MAS, the new MAP sensor, IAC sensor... nothing. It sounds like my issue is electrical/ECM.

What I can recommend if the fuel pump is starting to go... First, have someone turn the key to the (ACC) but don't start while you stand back by the gas tank. You should hear the fuel pump running. If it's a sporadic issue, you may just have to drop the tank and replace. However, before you go that route, buy a $15 fuel pressure gauge and attach it to the fuel rails.(On an '03 - 5.3L it should range from 55 - 62 psi) Depending how far you are below your truck's proper threshold, you should check the fuel filter for clogs and re-check your pressure or just go ahead and start replacing your fuel pump. I hope this helps.

I have an 06 chevy avalanche that turns over fine, but it's not starting up, when it first happened it wouldn't even turn over, just a click, I found out that there was a fuse burnt out for the Ing starter, and now it turns over but wont fire up, i can hear the fuel pump coming on, I've changed the computer, neutral safety switch, all fuses, went though the electrical system to make sure everything was plug in, I'm stumped . any ideas or have any tips?

Replace your fuel filter first might save a lot of money
