100000+ miles. For the last year the Service AWD comes on and off with no particular pattern. Neither 2 dealers or various transmission shops can tell me if the problem can be catastrophic or if the worst that can happen is the all wheel drive is inoperable but two wheel drive still works. Any suggestions or comments?

I have the same problem with the same answer from dealers and shops. After a while the light will stay on steady. I took it to a trusted mechanic and he said everything is working fine and it looks to be electrical (relay or something). I am slso researching further ti find solution. I will keep you posted. By the way my van has 185,000 miles and is running fine. if nothing else I hope that I have eased your concern that nothing catostrophic will happen

Thanks Joe. I just took the van into another dealer for a different problem and the dealer said they would "fix" the "Service AWD" light for $760.00. Your comments gave me some comfort. Thanks again.

I am experiencing the same problem, the item is an AWD module, and I have asked the same questions, I was informed that the flickering light means that you still have AWD when the light comes on and stays, your AWD is no longer usable. However the part is 480.00 that does not include labor. hopefully this helps.

Ihave a 2000 astro and it turned out to be the wiring behind the battery that bacame corroded. 2 dealerships couldnt find it neither could an independent auto shop. My father finally found it the first try. My friends 2003 van had the same problem and same fix.

I had the module swapped out and the light still came on. I made sure that I wouldn't have to pay for the module if that happened. If you do swap it out, as the computer analysis will tell the service dept. to do, make sure they will not charge you if it doesn't solve the problem. I'm going to check corrosion behind the battery next.

My 2000 astro awd has the same light on light off problem. However, the van feels like it is jerking while I am driving. The problem comes and goes. It feels like its down shifting then up shifting rapidly. It makes no difference whether the engine is hot or cold. I am going to check the wiring next as I had the van check by an independant garage, but they had no luck.

I have a 2000 AWD Astro (90,000 mi) also with an intermittent "Service AWD" indication.
Sounds like from what I am reading that it could be the AWD module or corroded wiring behind the battery. Any other possibilities? I also notice the tires scrubbing once in awhile, AWD module?

Had front wheel bearing replaced 1 month ago. Brake was pulsating . other day went to use brake and plowed into back of car. No brakes. Now they said it could be other wheel bearing. Anyone with same problem out there. Just fortunate I didn't hit a child.

Could be hard vacuum line that goes acceross the top of the engine. It will cause not only your heat/air to work only on defrost but will cause a large vacuum leak. This vac line going bad is common on these vans.

Change that coil it may be arcing. Check for vacuum leaks, including the clamps on your air filter intake hose.

I have the same intermittant misfire issue on my 92. changed cap& rotor, wires and plugs to no effect. Thanks for the vaccuum line tip. I believe that to be the cause, especially after the heater only working on defrost comment. Thanks!!

2000 Astro here, 160,000 - intermittent AWD malfuntion lamp comes & goes ... changed tranfer case fluid to GM's newer "blue" fluid" ... no change to AWD lamp. Checked wiring behind batt ? saw nothing. Jerky rear diff while turning tight radius turned out to be the bolt that are torqued to hold the bearing caps in the diff ... one was nearly finger loose & wiped out one bearing on diff. Changed bearings & all is well. Short of the AWD indicator coming & going.

On the vacuum line comment - Right on, the line that goes across then down to the vacuum ball was hard, flaking & porous ... especially right at the vacuum canister below the blower motor near the frame rail.
