I am having fuel pump problems with my 99 Astro. I know the fuel pump is not working because I do not hear the pump running. I was told to check the relay and the fuse first. I found the relay under the hood and that is okay. I cannot find the fuse. I checked under the hood and under the dash and cannot find the fuse block that holds that fuse. I was at the dealer one time and they said that their is another fuse block in the back portion of the van, but I do not know where it is. Is this true and if it is not true then where is this fuse.

I have a 99 AWD astro and the ecm-1 fuse (located under the hood, drivers side same box as fuel pump relay)also protects? the fuel pump wiring. When this fuse blows, the fuel pump is inop. Hope this helps.

I checked the fuse and it is okay. I am at a lose with this one because I took a tester and found out that I have no power going to the pump. I have power going into the relay. From their I do not know what else to check.

I have this troulbe with 2000 montana,. 2 years ago this happen, and new fuel pump fixed it. Last week the problem came back. I replaced the pump, but now sometimes the van will crank and run fine. Sometimes it will crank and run ruff and die. When this happens the pump isn't running. I can wait a while and it might crank and might not. Still pulling hair out on it.If find out anything will post back to you.

Yes, the fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. The tank must be emptied and dropped from the van. The pump assembly can then be removed by removing the snap ring and lifting the assembly thru the access hole in the top of the gas tank. New pump assembly about $300. Some owners remove the middle seat and mat and chisel a 'sardine can hole' thru the floor, hole must be cut over the access hole. Makes future fuel pump changes very easy. GMC people say running the fuel tank with less then a 1/4 tank lets the top bearing of the fuel pump sit in air and not kept cool by the gasoline, causing top bearing failure.

99 gmc safari. Sometime van starts and runs fine. Then will crank fine but will not start. has left me walking home twice. When hooking the battery cable to battery get a good spark like there is a short but does not run battery down. All fuses good. Don't know how to check relays. Could this be fuel pump or ?????

Nope!! It was a bad ground wire on the fuel tank harness right by the fuel tank. Its all painted and the only ground is were the screw goes threw the frame wire brushed it to bare metal re-connected it works perfect

Dane,

Thanks for the advice. Will call mechanic in morn ing to recommend he do the same before draining just filled gas tank. Been having troulbe with fuel gauge lately. Acting all screwy. Full, empty, back and forth no matter how much gas is in tank.
Engine cranking but not kicking over. Sound familiar.

To All
I have had no trouble with my van since!!
I did paint over ground wire and bolt to seal it up so it will not rust good luck

Okay, mine has been acting similarly. I have a wandering gas gage, have for a couple of years. Now no fuel pump. My question is, reading the relay I see the hot 12 V, the ground, 1.1 meg through the fuel pump, and I get 12 V from the PCM when the ignition is on. The manual says 2 seconds to prime, but I get constant 12 V. I'll check the ground but my worry is the PCM providing 12v constantly to the pump and burning it out. I've had no engine lights so I'd think I'd get some kind of engine light for too much fuel pressure.
