I have a 1995 Chevy Astro Van that has about 100K miles on it. The problem is that it runs REAL rough at idle and the exhaust smells. It runs fine at highway speeds, but at a stop it sometimes stalls or just runs real rough. It has been tuned up and I know that is not the problem. I had a real hard time getting it past inspection emmision tests. Any ideas out there on what could be wrong? EGR valve/oxygen sensor??
Thanks for any advice.

well, you are truly close to your problem. If you can get a hold of a scanner and read the voltage on the o2 sensor, that would be good. if they are more than 1 volt, they are trash. Less than a volt, they are still ok. Next would be the catalitic converter for the bad smell.. If it smell a lot like fuel, sounds like the o2's are out...rotten eggs smell....cat is out

Thanks, I will give the O2's a look over to see. The Exhaust smells more like it is running real rich, kinda like unburned fuel.

ok...not enough air, possibly a dirty throttle plate as well as the o2's.

Take it to the Dealer. They can plug it in and check the codes. You may pay a Little. But how much is your time worth and how many weekends can you afford in guessing.

No guessing here been there done that.
Fuel pressure regulator inside manifold plenum is leaking and causing a rich mixture.
$50 for a new one and acouple of hrs to chaqnge it.

Where did you get one for $50? I just called Autozone and they told me it was part of the Fuel Injection Unit -$285.99!

the regulator is separate from the injector "spider" it is $ 43 at advance auto and you can even see a picture of it. Although if you change the injectors then the advice would be to change the regulator also.

I have a 1995 Chev Astro. I have the "running rich" syndrome and poor gas mileage. Where can I find a little more information on how to check for leaks with the fuel pressure regulator? Also, can I "seal off" the EGR valve without reprecussion? or does the electric drive for the EGR valve also have a sensor built into it?

To all who replace the spider injector systems on Astro vans (vin W), beware! BRAND NEW PARTS CAN BE DEFECTIVE! I opted for the complete package (regulator, spider lines, and nut kit) and it was around $350 at Napa. I did the installation and the van barely ran. Figuring I screwed up, I removed the plenum again to find nothing wrong. Finally had to call my mechanic for a visit. We tore it apart a third time (nothing wrong) and he checked all the sensors, which were fine. The van still wouldn't run. Of course the fuel pressure was at 61 psi. Finally, after replacing dist. cap, rotor, plugs and wires, AND compression checking each cylinder (150 psi, each), he told me to take that piece of junk back 'cause it was bad. That lesson cost me $75 and some explaining to the parts guy. After the exchange, I reinstalled the new injector and the van cranked up and ran perfectly. To this day, it runs like brand new and the mileage is back up to around 17 mpg (It was 12). Hope this helps.

One Cat. converter, located where the two pipes join together from the manifolds. I just replaced mine and what a hassle. If you have a patience or time issue, I'd suggest taking it to a shop.

I have a 93 astro van thats running rich. I pulled the spark plugs and the 3 on the right side were black, but the 3 on the left side looked fine. What would cause that?

Brian, sounds like fuel pressure reg or bad injector line...
pull the upper plenum and if the right side is clean in one area it's most likely from fuel spray...
