1989 Park Avenue Hard to start

I replaced the magnet on the cam gear, double checked the timing marks on the timing gear and the crank gear, installed the timing chain. Now it is very hard to start when it is cold. It cranks and cranks, fires then spits back through the air intake. I crank it again and it will start but this takes 30 seconds. After it is warmed up, it starts instantly and runs great. Any ideas what may be causing this? The check engine light went out after replacing the magnet on the cam gear and is not on now.
