You would think that a quality car like Buick would have GM having a recall over the ignition key problem. I wonder why they don't.

My 99 regal horn does not work. Have checked the fuse and relay. Both ok. What else would prevent horn from working?
check the horn itself could be worn out and seized or shorted alltogether.check for power at the horn. with someone elses help, have thempress the horn button and with a test light make sure you have power going to it and on the other side.

After reading a post on carspace forum, apparently spraying wd-40 on the shifter console should cure it. Now let me tell you what I did with my newly bought 2001 Buick Regal.(Don't spill anymore coffee or soda on the shifter this is the cause, the shifter is not waterproof). The problem is the thumb switcheroo that enable a gear change does not make contact once liquid comes in contact. If your key is stuck work that thumb switch up and down a few times or use the release button mention above.
To make the repair:
1)with strong finger or a screw driver pop off the top middle piece around the shifter dial. No need to remove the side pieces.
2)Move the thumb swith used for gear change up and down and you'll see it has metal parts near the floor where an electrical connector is located. Spray any metal moving parts as you work the thumb switch up down up down. Thats it.
Moreover, you'll noticed a relay click on steering wheel as your work the thumb switch up down up down. Just perform this on my Buick so can't tell you how successful according to the post it may need a second coating depending on how much liquid spilled ... good luck!!!
I just used WD 40 as described above and it appears to be working just fine...

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have had this problem for years and refused to fix it for the third time. I had the selenoid replaced and it happened again a few days later. You would think Buick would know about this! Again today it happened and this time I could not get it out after hours of trying. So I used the screwdriver method and I'm thrilled.

Why in the world did not the first class Buick division of GM recall this problem and fix it?

Just want to let anyone out there with a Ford fusion if you ever get in a cituation where you put the car in park and can't get the key out, well Last saturday Aug.7th,2010 I was faced with this. I was out of town and didn't have the means to go to a mechanic. I was able to drive it home. I called my nephew which is a mechanic and he thought it was the censor but come to find out it is the little silver plastic piece that goes around the button on your shifter. A piece of it broke off and it cause some kind of mechanical problem to the point that when you put it in park the ignition did not acknowledge it. So if you just pop that silver plastic thing off it will go all the way into park and you can remove your key. The dealership said that the whole shifter and all would have to be replaced and that is big bucks. So I called DOT Vehicle Safety and filed a complaint. If enough people do this they will be forced to do a recall and for has to flip the bill. That number is 1-888-327-4236

I wish I had seen this forum sooner! Just paid $300 to have the steering wheel lock solenoid replaced. Although I'm happy that my key now comes out, I was not happy when told that I needed to have my solenoid control switch on shifter replaced as well. I told the mechanic at the dealership not to replace it ($600!?), however, I do need someone with the experience to explain how I can do this myself. Please help!

I have a 1999 Honda Passport and the key will not come out. Cannot find the override switch under the steering column. Can someone help me please?

I'll be sure to try to find this override switch when I get home! I've been dealing with this for over a year. All i could do before was push the button on my gear shift and listen for the "click". Sometimes it would work after 1 or 2 tries other times it would be over an hour. I also forgot about it a few times and had to get a new battery. Thanks Randy!

I have the same issue with my 2001 Regal. I had the solenoid replaced, and it worked for about a day. I found out that it is a short in the shifting column and the whole thing has to be replaced.~$550.00 with labor. Hopefully that will finally fix the problem. For those having the problem there is an override switch that you can press to release the Key. There is a small (about the size of a dime) cap on the underside of the steering column. Pry it off with a screwdriver and then stick the screwdriver in the hole. It will hit a button that lets the key out of the ignition.
thank you very much. I've been struggling with this problem for a year, and it has gradually gotten worse. When it first started happening, I would only have to wait about 60 seconds for a faint "click" to allow me to turn the key to the release position. The last month it has been taking 10-20 MINUTES before I can release the key. I just used your screwdriver solution. Thanks very much!

Just started to have this problem on my 2002 Regal LS (141,000 miles) four days ago, and it happens now virtually all the time. Replaced my worn key with my still-new original spare - and that did not fix the problem.

Will try the screwdriver trick tonight - as well as the "thump the shifter forward" trick. I hope that I can avoid replacing the lock tumblers, replacing the solenoid, or the other more-expensive fixes.

I have had the same thing happen to me. i took the steering wheel off, you will need a steering wheel puller and a tool to get the small ring out. took out the set screw and changed the switch out cost about 14 bucks

We are having the same problem with our 2002 Regal GS. We thought it was the shifter, however, last night we wiggled the steering wheel back and forth and then forward & back (just a bit) not much movement there - but we heard a pop and then the key came out. This is so wierd because it's intermitent - sometimes it comes out fine and other times you have to try & try to get it out!

Got mine fixed this week. Mechanic said spilled soda made gears sticky. He cleaned and lubed the gears. No more problems.
