I have a 2001 Regal GS, and appear to be having the same problem. When I turn the car off, I am unable to turn the key all the way to where it will come out. Sometimes, it will come out with repeated tries, but the problem is getting worse. I too would like to know why, and what might be involved to fix the problem

I just had the same problem with my ]99 buick regal. The problem is the solenoid between the ignition switch. I paid 250.00 to have the tumbler replaced in the ignition only to find out I had the sanme problem as before. The solenoid fixed the problem immediately. Good luck.

I have the same issue with my 2001 Regal. I had the solenoid replaced, and it worked for about a day. I found out that it is a short in the shifting column and the whole thing has to be replaced. ~$550.00 with labor. Hopefully that will finally fix the problem. For those having the problem there is an override switch that you can press to release the Key. There is a small (about the size of a dime) cap on the underside of the steering column. Pry it off with a screwdriver and then stick the screwdriver in the hole. It will hit a button that lets the key out of the ignition.

Are you having any more problems? How much did it cost to replace the Solenoid?

It is the shifter assembly. I had the same problem with my 2000 Regal. The sensor in the assembly does not recognize the car as being in park, and will not release the key.

I am having same problem in my 1999 Regal, but also associated with total loss of electrcial power. If I boost the battery, everything fires up fine. It runs until I shut it off, then all dead and key stuck. No alternator waring lights so expect battery needs replacement, any other ideas?

Turned out all it was was a loose battery connection at the post. Removeed both posts ground and cleaned them. NO further problems.

After reading a post on carspace forum, apparently spraying wd-40 on the shifter console should cure it. Now let me tell you what I did with my newly bought 2001 Buick Regal.(Don't spill anymore coffee or soda on the shifter this is the cause, the shifter is not waterproof). The problem is the thumb switcheroo that enable a gear change does not make contact once liquid comes in contact. If your key is stuck work that thumb switch up and down a few times or use the release button mention above.

To make the repair:
1)with strong finger or a screw driver pop off the top middle piece around the shifter dial. No need to remove the side pieces.
2)Move the thumb swith used for gear change up and down and you'll see it has metal parts near the floor where an electrical connector is located. Spray any metal moving parts as you work the thumb switch up down up down. Thats it.

Moreover, you'll noticed a relay click on steering wheel as your work the thumb switch up down up down. Just perform this on my Buick so can't tell you how successful according to the post it may need a second coating depending on how much liquid spilled ... good luck!!!

One more thing to make it clear, when you pop the top middle assembly off this piece is what holds the coffee holder, traction control and the utility storage. Don't pop off the trim around the shifter, pop the whole top assembly off by prying on the sides where the top assembly meets the sides pieces.

YES, FOUND THE OVERRIDE SWITCH JUST AS YOU DESCRIBED AND IT WORKS! The key problem started with the 1999 Buick Regal intermittently then gradually grew worse the past month, no rhyme or reason, so have done this for several days now. Still not sure whether it's the solenoid or other more serious problems [drivers information module display has recently disappeared also] but will tide things over for now - THANK YOU!

Had the same problem wound up replacing computer because machanic said it had a short and was draining battery. It seems that a dead battery will lock up everything.

Under your steering columm is a hole, you will have
to pop the cap off.the hole is directly under ignition switch..once you pop the cap off take
a small screw driver and gently poke up in the
hole you will fill it hit the manual release
button and this will release your key every time..
this is a feature very few people know about..
but Buick put it in in case the battery dies you
can get the key out..beats paying $400.00 to get
replaced.and you don't have to spend time fiddling for 1/2 hr trying to get your key out..
the shiffter lock is not reading..common on
all buick regals 1997-2002's...

Thanks to Ben's report of the secret override switch to get a stuck key out, I don't have to spend big bucks on an old car - this worked great on my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. Thank you Ben, and thank you Internet!.

I am having that problem now with my 2001 Buick Regal. I cannot get the key out of the ignition. So, I need to replace the whole shift assembly and that costs $550.00 plus labor? You would think with all of us having a problem there should be something recalled.

To Randy - Thanks for the advice about that manual switch. I will try that as soon as I get home tonight. Thank you everybody for sharing, because I don't know about you, but I don't have the $$$ to pay for a new shift assembly, but I can carry around a screwdriver! LOL
