We had a BMW X5 2005. On 8/27/2011 we had been home about 30 min.and the car was parked under the carport next to our kitchen. We heard a popping sound and my son went into the kitchen and saw flames coming from the front and sides of the BMW. We left the house and by the time the fire department arrived the fire had spread to our home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Does anyone know have there been any lawsuits filed against BMW ? Please e-mail us if you any information on this,at [email protected]

BMW X5 2002 caught fire after being parked 24hr. Owner stated that car alarm sounded, when he checked on the vehicle smoke was comming from the dash, and airbag had been deployed. Disconnecting the battery stopped the fire.

Why would this type of fire take so long to get started?

Correction, the car was sitting 12hr not 24hr. still, why would it take that amount of time for this type of fire to get started.

I just drove my new, just-purchased 2012 BMW X5 (with 60 some miles on it) around my house (I don't feel comfortable driving the vehicle for commuting yet) and parked in the garage. Just before I opened the door, I though i smelled something burning which was similar to either paper-burning smell or some plastic burning smell. After I got out of the car, I realized that the smell was coming from the engin compartment and so I opened the hood. Because it was dark in the garage, I couldn't see what was burning although I sort of suspected that it might be just some new parts getting used to the engine heat. However, when I rose up through the stairs to enter the kitchen, I realized that the garage was full of smoke! Scared, I searched for "smoke from X5" and here I am. This is such an awful feeling after spending some $65K on a car and got myself trapped in a fire hazard! I will have to check with the dealer tomorrow. Deeply worried....

We had BMW x5 2003, on 7/18/12 my brother park the car in front of walmart just for 15 minute and came back the car got fire. We wonder the wasn't even start the and how come the car got fire by itself. We bought this car on 7/18/12 on this car we had only liability insurance, the insurance didn't pay us any cent because they said that we didn't have collision.

If anyone could help please rely back, thank you

We have owned 5 new BMW's over the years.
Last Saturday while driving down the highway our (2005 x5) air conditioner began smoking, especially on the passenger side. We pulled over and within 10 minutes the entire cab was engulfed in flames (no flames under the hood). We were able to get out of the vehicle before the flames erupted.

The vehicle is totaled, along with approximately $12,000.00 in personal contents.

I googled "bmw x5 ac fires" and came across quite a few postings of the exact same experience.

Needless to say we are not very comfortable driving our 2006 535xi... not sure we would purchase another BMW.

Drove from work 10 minutes in my BMW X5 2003 to my home, pulled into my attached garage. I smelled smoke and looked to see the location, I noticed the location in the front passenger side infront of the tire where I saw sparks. I got into the car and pulled it out of the garage and drove to the front of my house. I saw more flames and ran in the house to call 911. I watched my car burn to the ground in minutes. I was in shock. We notified BMW of north america and they told us that they would remove the car from my house to a location where they could investigate. They got back to us and indicated that nothing could be done to help us because the damage was so extensive no cause could be determined. Do we have any recorse? Please help with any information

I drove 10 minutes to my home in my BMW X5. I drove into the garage and shut the car off. I got out of the car and smelt smoke. I looked to my right and saw smoke coming out of my hood and saw a spark down in the passenger side in front of the front tire. I quickly got back into the car and started it up and drove out of the garage into the front of the house. I went to get the hose and then I saw flames. I ran into the house to call 911. The fire trucks came and my son and I watched my car burn. I was so panicked that I forgot to grab my purse and real estate work. what a terrible experience.

I recently had a fire in my 2002 BMW M3, which Wawanesa insurance is trying to say was caused by an after market rear view camera.

1. The camera has no power source.
2. The camera is hooked up to the BMW fuse box, which fuses 7 and 41 blew, meaning it was also hook up to the radio.
3.If the fuses blew, then how did the camera cause the fire? The camera is activated only when the car is in reverse.

Battery caught fire outbo the blue - no explanation, my husband was driving, airbags went off - actually, one cut his arm. He pulled into a parking lot, fire department put out the fire - thank god he didn't have the kids in the car - he could have been on a highway - doesn't bear rhinking about.- this is so dangerous. Who do I start calling???!! If anyone has any ideas is be so grateful, thanks. [email protected]

Parked my 2002 BMWX5 after smelling someing burning 5 blocks from my home. From the time it took me to get out of the car and walk to the rear, the car was filled with black smoke and in short order the car burned. An independent professional company that specializes in vehicle fires and causation was hired. The conclussion was that it was electrical, originating in the center of the dash. I was lucky to have gotten out when I did.

Hello Ed,
Last week I was driving my 2001 X5 about 2 blocks from my house when dashboard lights went out. Then the car filled with smoke from above the dashboard. I pulled the car over and while I was parking the car the Drivers airbag deployed. I got out of the car called 911 and while waiting for the fire truck 2 more airbags deployed. I wanted to know if BMW repaired your car and did they charge you for the repair as it seems to be a common eneough problem and a potential deadly problem. please contact me at [email protected]

2003 X5 4.4L. Please check the wire that goes into the thermostat. This electronically controlled theremostat shortened and caought fire. Fortunatly my car was in the carport was able to put out quickly. The whole coolant sensor was burnt out and was lucky that the whole wiring system (including the MAF wire) was not affected. had it happened it would have cost me several thousounds. Check the sensor wires are not exposed. If so will shortened and will catch fire. If you see the engine temperature gauges swings erratically and getting "check collant temperature", the likely cause is this wire. Change the thermostat and the thermostat wiring.
