the problem is not that your engine is burning oil it is the oil that you are puting in your car i have been a bmw tech for 10 years if you use a ligher oil like 0w30 and your oil light is going off and on or just on next time go with a thiker oil

We have owned several BMW's, only 2 of them were X5's. We now have an 06 X5 4.8is and we are disappointed that is also burning oil. We previously owned a 4.6is that burnt oil, we thought the 4.8is would have the problem corrected. What a let down, these are great vehicles in every other way, but this is a huge flaw. I don't plan on purchasing another X5 and I am not sure I am going to trust this manufacturer again.

I have a 2002 4.4i X5. I have the same oil problem. I run a quart low every 1200-1500 miles. I have to keep about 4 quarts in the trunk for those places that don't have synthetic readily available. It is hard when you are in a foreign area on travel and don't know where the autozones etc. are located. I use the manufacturer recommended Castrol Syntec 10W-30, so I maybe I can try a slightly thicker viscosity. I love my truck, but this is a bit excessive for oil consumption. I am surprised in the amount of difference from different owners. It is interesting that it isn't all X5 V8 engines. I wonder what the problem is that they won't recognize and fix.
