I have purchased a 2005 X5 4.8is it currently has 14,890 miles on it and uses approx. 3 quarts of oil approx. every 7k miles. I previously owned a 2000 X5 4.4 and it did not use any oil that I know of. The dealers i have found have a policy of topping off the oil and not telling you.

Are there any other X5 4.4 or 4.8's out there who have X5's that use oil? The Dealer is telling me this is normal which i am finding hard to believe. I have owned many BMX's and I have never to my knowledge known of one that used this much oil in 7K miles.

I just bought a 2006 4.8is 4 months ago and have 5000 miles on it. I have gone thru 3 qts of oil and have been told by multiple dealerships that 1 qt per 1200 miles is normal. Not very happy about this since I was never told this when I bought it. I also found out about the consumption while on a road trip in another country and had to scramble to find a dealership to buy a 14 dollar qt of oil! My 2005 M3 dosen't burn a drop either! I find it hard to believe this info.

I owned a 2003-3.0 for 48,000-only oput oil in once when it was a quart low-currently have a 2005 4.4- 16,000 miles no need to add oil--but with both vehicles I changed oil one between each of the the factory recommended change periods

I leased a 530XI 9 months ago and my check oil light has gone off 3 times already!!! I brought it into the dealer each time and each time they had to add 1-2 quarts of oil. I only have 9000 miles!! Crazy! At least it is covered, but still a pain to bring in the car so often.

I have a 2002 X5 4.4. I don't have any issue with oil. That sounds very strange to me.

Yep. Awfully strange but i have a 2001 X5 3.0 and the oil consumption drives me crazy. In less than 5000km, I've put in 4 litres of Mobil synthetics, and now the indicator (those maintenance bars that come on at startup) shows one bar, ie. time for an oil change. Well, I've already changed the oil essentially...
Gotta go and buy me an oil field in Calgary.

Hey bud, sorry but that's not common. I've changed every 12000K.
I have a 2002 X5 4.4. no oil problems, my bud has a X5 3.0, same no problem.

Yes, this is certainly a problem with my 01 x5. I always change the oil well before the manufacturer reccommends but the light seems to come on about evey 4-5 months. This is especially true when the season changes from cold to hot. It seems the hotter it is the more likely it is to come on. The dealer told me that this is usual with this vehicle. Never was a problem with my 1990 525i. That's progress for you.

that seems very odd. Using a quart every 6 to 7,000 miles is normal, but every 1200 to 1500 is not normal. I would push them

My 01 x5 just turned 79,000 and for the first time ever the low oil light has come on( oil chage every 12-15k miles). Not sure why now it is using more oil and hasn't the last 79,000. Not dealer says it's normal. very happy though :(

I have a 2001 X5 3.0L w/ 190,000 KM's on it and I add about 1 litre (1 QT.) every 2000KM's. I had a 1998 E39 528i w/ 140KM's and NEVER added a drop between changes. I found the 2.8L to be more efficient but this 3.0L works harder on the X5. I don't bother adding Mobil 1 anymore. I just add the cheapest synth avail since it consumes it anyway. Try a 0W30 synth. WalMart has it for $5.55 a litre. Whatever you do, remember to ignore the BMW Service Lights! Change the oil & filter every 10,000KM no matter what! There are sludge issues if you keep the oil in for more than 15KM's or so. Also, drain the tranny every 50,000KM's. It's not 'lifetime' as noted in the books.

I have a 2002 X5 3.0 and it does consume oil. 4 quarts for 10K miles. I only got 50K miles on it, the dealer said it is ok the engine is designed the way to consume some oil.

My 2003 3.0 X5 did burn oil. I have mine serviced by the dealer regularly but I got the CHECK OIL LIGHT on two times and each time I had to put 1 quart in there. After that it seems OK. I own it since May 2003, bought it new.

My 2006 325xi with 4,985 miles had the same problem 3 days ago. The CHECK OIL LIGHT on and off every few hours. I brought the car back to the dealer today. They said the OIL SENSOR is defective (?). Took them an hour to replace it.

I have an 01 3.0 that recently had the check oil light (oil canister symbol) come on. First I thought it meant I had to change my oil, but from what I am reading it seems like I may jist need to top it off. Had the oil changed about 4k ago. I have no spots in my garage either, so it must be burning! Taking it to the dealership today to see what's wrong..

My mechanic told me that the guage in the BMW and some Mercs can get stuck below the already conservative check oil level and this can trigger the dash light even though the oil levels are fine. I have had no problems with my 2001 3.0 X5, but check the oil regularly anyway.

Hi there. I have a 2005 BMWX5 4.8, and the check oil light has come on atleast once a year, and yes it needs to be topped off. I also have owned many BMWs and this is new to me, my last bmw 740 never needed oil added. Dealer told me the same thing. I have now 12000 miles and have had to add oil twice.
good luck!
