X5 OWNERS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

I OWN A SILVER 2001 4.4 X5---------I AND HAVE BEEN HAVING TONS OF TIME AND MECHANICAL ISSUES

40186K MILES MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON
THE DEALER REPLACED THE AIR MASS SENSOR

40503K THE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN
THE DEALER REPLACED A DIFFERENT SENSOR

42978K I HEARD A CREEKING NOISE COMING FORM MY FRONT END OVER SPEED BUMPS
THE DEALER REPLACED BOTH MY CONTROL ARMS
AND THE REAR HATCH BECAUSE IT RATTLED.

43183K SINCE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CONTROL ARMS I HEARD A CLICKING NOISE
THE DEALER REPLACED BOTH OF BALL JOINTS

44471K WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL THERE WAS A THROBBING NOISE COMING FROM THE COLUMN
THE DEALER REPLACED MY POWER STEERING GEAR
AND THE HATCH WAS RATTLING AGAIN

45233K FRONT DRIVERSIDE SEATBELT WONT RETRACT
THE DEALER REPLACED THE LEFT SIDE SEAT BELT - AND THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK MADE ANOTHER
CREEKING NOISE, THE DEALER PUT A PIECE OF FELT TO REMOVE THE NOISE TEMPORARILY
AND THERE WAS A TICKING NOISE UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT THAT BMW SAID WAS NORMAL

48028K MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN
THE DEALER REPLACED THE OIL STRAINER FOR THE ENGINE AND THE LEFT SEATBELT AGAIN
I ALSO COMPLAINED ABOUT MY TRANSMISSION SLIPPING WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE
DEALER COULD FIND NO PROBLEMS

49835K A BAD GROANING NOISE CAME FROM STERRING DURING FIRST STARTUP
THE DEALER REPLACED THE POWER STEERING GEAR AND PRESSURE LINE FOR POWER STEERING
THEY REPLACED THE RIGHT SEATBELT AT THIS TIME AND THE REAR SUSPENSION WAS SQUEEKING

51210KTHE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING AGAIN
DEALER CHECKS FUNCTIONS NO PROBLEM, GO HOME.

51637K THE TRUCK IS MAKING CRUNCHING STEERING NOISES AGAIN
THE DEALER REPLACES THE POWER STEERING GEAR AGAIN-- THE TRANSMISSION IS STILL MAKING NOISES
AND THERE IS SOME MYSTERIOUS POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE CAR-
THEY HOLD MY TRUCK FOR 6 DAYS AND FINALLY REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION.

53841K MY TRUCK GETS TOWED TO THE DEALER BECAUSE A CHARRING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE
DEALER REPLACED THE WATER PUMP, COOLANT HOSE, BATTERY AND A NEW SQUEALING NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE.

56621K I VE HAD AN ELECTRICAL GLITCH WITH MY TURN SIGNALS AND HAZARDS, MY CHECK ENGINE OIL COMES ON 3X ALREADY THE DEALER SAYS IT COMMON. FOR EVERYONE WHO DRIVES A CAR IT IS NOT COMMON FOR A TRUCK WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE TO BURN OIL AT AN EXCESSIVE RATE.
THEY REPLACED MY LEFT AXLE ON THE TRUCK BECAUSE OF NOISE I HEARD A MAKING EXTREME LEFT TURNS. MY AIRBAG SCREWS WERE LOOSE, MY LOCK ON THE DRIVER SIDE FREEZES IN LOW TEMPS
AND THE HATCH RATTLES AGAIN.

IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE WHO OWNS AN X5 FROM THE 2000 YEAR
AND HAS ENCOUNTERED ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS THAT IVE HAD I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THEM AND WHAT
YOU OR BMW HAS DONE FOR YOU.

I have to start by saying I love my X5. It has not been problem-free though. I also had the seat belts replaced. The windshield wipers don't last long. The back door electric door latch had been replaced, it still pops open but when I hit a bump in the road it closes by itself. The key is the worst part of my car, I often go out to my car and find all the windows open because I sat on my key wrong plus I some times set off the car alarm by sitting on the key. The back-up and forward sensors keep beeping after I put the car in park. The radio reception is the worst so I listen to my CDs. Thank you, Charlie

OH, SHUT UP AND STOP CRYING. IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH, AND HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH IT, WHY DIDN'T YOU BUY SOMETHING ELSE LONG TIME AGO?!?!?!
IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THAT MUCH - GET A KIA. YOU MIGHT LIKE IT.
WAIT, ACTUALY THE CHRYSLER(M-B)ML350 SOUNDS BETTER. TRY IT, AND DON'T FORGET TO RENT A ROOM AT THE M-B DEALERSHIP.

I also have 01 4.4 X5 and on and off the car has spent 97 days at the dealer. I have experienced most of the problems you outlined. The seat belt is really our fault. we dont let it retract properly and it gets twisted. However, the X5 is still the best SUV out there and I put up with it. More than likely i will buy another X5.

There will be problems with these cars, Hell the way we make them I would never own one. " put a piece of tape here, put a piece of felt here, dont worry about that stripped bolt the customer will never see it, These things go on every day at plant spartanburg. Believe me I see them first hand. BMW is becoming FORD GM DODGE when I went work there it was quality over quantiy now its reversed.
min pay= pissed off workers who dont care
Upper management= treating workers like shit lies lies lies all the time.

Interesting discussion.
After I saw this, I bought MB ML 270 and I love it.
Also with this car I had to go to dealer some times, but mostly just because of some parts get used (breaks, oil, etc.)
Now I have it 2 years and only bigger problem was dropping oil from engine, which dealer fixed in one day.
The best on MB is, that I have for free all repairs at dealer and also they do for free standard service in first 6 years or first 160 000 kilometers (including price of oil and other parts, which should be replaced in this time)

I have experienced some of the same problems mentioned with my 01 X5 3.0i. At 80k miles there was a strange rattling, creeking, moaning noise coming from the front end. The dealer replaced both control arms. This seemed to temporarily fix the problem but alas the noise returned. Now it seems worse. Its relatively quiet until I travel unlevel roads and speedbumps. It feels like the engine is going to drop out! If that weren't bad enough, now at 100K the nav system, radio, and cd player shuts off every few minutes. The dealer wants $1800 to replace. Any ideas as to the noise or radio would be appreciated.

I have a 2001 3.0 sport with 32,000 miles on it. The rear hatch kept popping open of its own accord, this was due to water getting into the switch and corroding it. Apparently there is a new design now so you can buy the whole trim with the switch built in (inc. number plate lamps) OR do what I did and buy a new micro-switch from BMW for £11 and replace it yourself. I also have a strange little knocking noise coming from the steering column when you turn the wheel gently? And now the sound from the radio / cd player has gone off. Power to the radio is there but no sound, it comes back now and again but seems to have gone off for good now....any ideas?

Well I actually got my radio fixed and it only cost me £25. The amplifier which is located underneath the CD multichanger in the boot was sat in approx. 5 inches of water, luckily the place I took the car to are not rip-off merchants and managed to remove the amp and dry it out. Luckily it still worked when they put it back in. I was very grateful but now I need to find out where the water is coming in.....any ideas???

I have a 01 X5 3.0 and at 60k have had to replace sway bars, ball joints and have had electrical issues as well. There is a rattle that comes from the back hatch that no dealer can fix and they say it is just inherint with the design and that I have to live with it. I love the look and drive of the X5 but I dont know if I will get another because of lack of reliability. On the other hand our 2000 3 Series has been a incredibly reliable car that I would purchase again. I think I will look hard at the Lexus SUV vs. the X5 when I decide to get rid of the X5.

Electrical issues in my x5- door locks are a constant problem. Always misfiring. The water hose needs is loose. Wipers wear out fast (not a big deal). I want to buy another X5 BUT...the cost in repairs for something fairly minor is very high. I am also thinking LEXUS now.
