We have a 06 x3 when my wife turned on the heated seats it burnt a hole in the seat and her jeans. I'm taking it in to the service center tonight. Has anyone else ever heard of this? or any advice. Im concerned that it could have happened while she was driving and caused an accident or worse.

I also have a 06 X3 and I have the same problem. While I was driving, I felt as if my butt was burning. It burnt a hole on the left cushion of the driver seat. Probably there is a problem with the heating element and the wiring. Taking it to the service center Monday.

Thanks for the response. We took it in and they said that it was a problem with the heating element. They replaced the seat no problem under warranty, and did a great job. Our burn was on the left cushion also.

Since you have an x3 let me give you a heads up. I left my X3 out of the garage one night and leaves covered the car and apparently worked their way from the cowl vent to the blower motor assy. I took it in because it was making a rattling noise when the fans were on. They tried to tell me that the blower motor needed to be replaced and wouldn't be covered under warranty. I started complaining and finally they just cleaned the leaf debris out of the blower motor. And were very nice about it.

Thanks for the heads up.

Got my car back after one week. Yes, it was the problem with the heating element. They did a good job changing the seat. Also, there was a problem with the passenger seat air bag sensor. It was always Off. So, they had to repair that and changed the seat as well. Other than those two problems, my brakes were changed, and of course the oil. Now, the car is running smoothly. I find that it is more fun to drive it in winter than in the summer. With all the snow we have up here, we definitely need the X drive.

Hello just letting everyone know I got the burn on the left drivers side lumbar cushion too. Seems like it came right after 36 months but its obviously a defect im sure they will take care of it rather then a recall which is verfy expensive. Ill have them do the passenger seat also as you can see the leather has started to shrivel in the same place. Ill let everyone know how they (P and W in Pittsburgh, PA) handles it.

This is a follow up to my post 12/14/2008 re burn on the left drives side lumbar cushion. P and W the dealer replaced just the right leather strip that had been burned and they didnít write it up on the repair receipt, but the seat itself now heats evenly again. They did at no charge though im out of 36 month warranty though this kind of item may be covered. Id have to give them a 10 out of 10 as they fixed it politely and professionally.

My wife just experienced the same problem with our 04 530. Heated seat burned through the leather and burned her leg. My car is our of warranty. Anyone have any additional experience with the dealer in an out of warranty situation?

I bought a brand new X5 in 2005. I usually did not turn on the heating for the seat. I have noticed a coin-size melting spot on the cushion of the driving seat. I have been wondering when and how it got there. Yesterday i turned on the heat for 30 mins when I was driving to work. I was shock to find out the same spot turned into a big hole. My car was just out of warranty last year. I think it is a malfuncion which could cause serious injury. BMW dealer should take care of it, free of charge.

I had the exact same problem (the left seat on the side)- a hole burned through the leather.
I am wondering what I can do since I do not have a warranty on my 2006 X3?

I have an 05 x3 and twice my driver seat has burned through, burning my 'bum'. First time it went through my anorak and jeans and these were replaced as was the whole seat. This time I recognised the problem and managed to turn the heat off before it went into my clothes. It has burned a hole in the leather seat though.

04 525i with no waranty. There is a recall on seat heating circuit. The recall campaign No 04V575000 from NHTSA recall Bulletin. The recall is expected to begin during Dec 2004.

"It is possible that the heating mat in the backrest's side bolster could overheat and damage, or melt a small hole in, this area of the seat cover"

My local dealer didn't even know there was a recall. They tried to make me pay for whole repair since no waranty.... What a shame......

Hi, I have had the same problem today with my 650, its an 06/55 plate and out of warranty. Have BMW replaced the burned seat and parts? even though its out of warranty?

David, This just happened to me as well-luckily I wasn't sitting in it at the time, just left it on when I went to warm up the car-it's still at the service center AND I've been told that I may need to pay for the labor. A defect with the seat and I'll have to pay to fix it. Doesn't sound right, does it? BTW, I ALSO have a 2006 X3.

My heated seat in my 05 BMW X3 started burning a hole in my seat and nearly my pants last week. Seconds after smelling something burning, I felt my leg burning. I have contacted BMW and am waiting for some help. I also filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's safercar.gov web site.

2004 x3. When turned on, smelled smoke, seat was real hot to the touch, and leather started to burn through. Took to dealer today, and they said because it was out of warranty, it would cost me 1200.00. I complained, and will have to speak with manager Monday. Does anyone know if there was in fact a recall?

Wow, I didn't realize that this is common. I too, was burned on my left thigh. They measured my seat at 150 degrees! They replaced the heating element and the leather since a hole burned through the bottom layers! Also had the passenger airbag sensor problem and they replaced the seat pan as well about a year ago.
