Bilingualism isn't worth the cost

There are 74 comments on the fullcomment.nationalpost.com story from Jan 21, 2012, titled Bilingualism isn't worth the cost. In it, fullcomment.nationalpost.com reports that:

Canada’s provinces spend almost $1-billion a year offering services and education in both official languages. According to a report issued Monday by Vancouver’s Fraser Institute, the more than $900-million spent by the provinces each year, coupled with the $1.5-billion Ottawa spends offering federal services in French and English, means that bilingualism costs Canadian taxpayers $2.4-billion annually.

Is it worth it? In just two provinces — Quebec and New Brunswick — are more than 1% of the population unilingual in a minority language. According to the 2006 Census, 2.4% of Quebec’s population (182,000 people) are unilingual anglophones, unable to speak and understand French. Meanwhile, 10.2% of New Brunswickers (about 75,000 people) claim to be unilingual francophones who struggle to comprehend English.

Hector, that 85 dollars per tax payer a year. Compare that to someone who drinks tim hortons before work....that figure is over $400 per year. So in essence, less than a cup of coffee. not bad really:)

There are other segments of population costing more money than franco minorities.

Those who are poorly educated for instance. Those who fall in the ''low human capital'' category = higher unemployment rate (limited competencies), higher health issues (adding to the costs of healthcare), higher level of incarceration (poverty issues) etc.

The economic argument, when it comes to franco minority, is foolish.

Bring something else to the table.

The french do not deserve bilingualism. They are no better than the Scots, Irish, Germans, Swedes or any others that built this Nation.

You french think too highly of yourselves.

no you got it wrong it the English that think to highly of themselves they are the ones that started groups of hates like the KKK and the white supremist and they are the ones that went around killing the real people of our country just because they did not want to speak their language ... they are the ones going around trying to impose their rules on the world ......
so in other words if they do not get their way they resort to extremes
