Michelin, Honda to Pay Out After PAX Run-Flat Tire Settlement

Jul 3, 2009 Full story: The Driving Woman 77

Run-flat tires are a mixed blessing, for all the reasons listed here . Some owners of Michelin's PAX run-flats that came with the "Technology Package" on Honda Odyssey Touring and Acura RL models certainly didn't like them.

Another fact people do not understand. If you want a tire that's good in snow, then by a Snow tire. A all-season tire's chemical compound does not work in freezing temp's. I've been lucky enough to test Michelin and Bridgestone's snow tires. When a tire says M/S it means multi-purpose. Not Snow. Reading this forum has been stressful. I manage a major tire center. You people make me sick. You wanna complain about something you don't understand. Maybe you should of researched your van you bought, before you bought it. It was a option, you could of just got the EX or LX. I personally bought a 06 Touring today with PAX. Tires are new. So i will drive on them and buy a set of wheels/spare kit and snow tires for winter, to extend the life of tire.
You manage a major tire center? Tell us where it is so we can avoid you. M&S stands for "mud and snow". You could look it up. We're talking normal street use, not driving to the North Pole.

I just had 2 tires replaced by Town Fair Tire...the only place around, other than the dealer. The cost.....$713! They suggested that some people were buying a "total package deal" for 4 tires and a lifetime guarantee...I was not only afraid to ask that price, but I was also afraid that I would not be able to see the fine print that would preclude most normal conditions that require replacement.$713 and I should only expect 35,000 out of them! Pretty sad.
Judy, you need to read thru this thread and find out about putting "regular" tires on your van. You're getting ripped off replacing Pax tires two at a time.

Mr. Honda would not have allowed his customers to be taken advantage of this way. He would have settled this to the satisfaction of his Odyssey owners. Mr. Honda was an honorable man. I sure he not happy having his name disgraced like this after he worked so hard to make Honda the #1 automotive manufacturer in the world for quality.
RIP Mr. Honda.

Sure, go call any lawyer's office. By the way, Michelin made the run flat tires, not Honda.

You people are all morons. It's a run flat tire... That is a feature, it costs more. Just like a better stereo or trim package in an automobile.
This is not Honda's fault. It's not really Michelin's fault that people are so stupid.
I have a 2006 Odyssey Touring. I paid $1300 for four new tires at 26,000 miles. I don't need to worry if my wife has my two daughters and their great grandma in the car, full of melting ice cream in the middle of a Disney movie driving through downtown LA after dark.
If you want to save a few hundred bucks and let her get out and change the spare while some crackhead steals your iPad, then go for it.
Middle America... You disgust me. Do more research (if you'd done that in school you wouldn't be so vain) and think before you start pointing fingers to make up for your own poor decision making.
As far as Michelin goes? They were just trying to protect our families. Make money also, sure... But WTF people???
I got some cream for your wife!

We bought a 2007 Honda oddessey this year the salesman didn't tell us about the pax tire system or we wouldn't have bought it . He also said it had a spair tire and it didn't . Them and MICHILIN should have to give you a set of tires and wheels reg . size . I would tell any one they suck and you cant drive on a dirt road . And no body will fix them. The tires are high prized for a poor person you cant afford them.

Your beef should be strictly with the dealer where you bought your car. Honda developed the Pax system when the van was new and it was offered as an option, you could take it or leave it. As a used car buyer, you are obligated to inspect the car before buying it. That's all water under the bridge for you, so I would recommend you drive it until you need four new tires and then change over to regular type tires and rims. There's lots of information about that in this thread as well as on the internet.

Perhaps I missed it, but I would like to find out if anyone who has replaced the PAX tires on a 2006 Honda Odyssey has experienced any problems--like the van shaking--after they switched out the tires.
One of the guys from my dealership said they have heard (?) that the van simply doesn't run smoothly on regular tires and rims.

I BELIEVE THIS TO BE "BUNK" ! AS AN RVer, WE TOWED OUR 05 ODDY--T & WHERE FORCED TO REPLACE ALL 4 WHEELS / TIRES. WE DID THIS @ DISCOUNT TIRE UP IN BELLINGHAM, WA IN 05 OR 06 W / 25 K ON THE CRAP--PAX.........$ 1400 +/- OUTTA POCKET AS I RECALL. NEVER SAW ANY ADJ. FROM HONDA OR MICH, AND I EVEN JOINED A C /A SUIT.. I ALSO RETURNED THE WHEELS & TIRES TO THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER TO BE " RECYCLED " & STUDIED. NEVER A WORD BACK FROM HIM, EITHER.

ANYWAYS, THE NEW WHEELS (15" ) & TIRES RAN & HANDLED AS WELL AS ANY CAR I'VE EVER DRIVEN. WE STILL HAVE THE CAR & RIMS & I AM JUST NOW DUE TO REPLACE THE TIRES W/ MY 2ND SET AFTER THE UPGRADE FROM THE PAX. I STILL HAVE MY AIR SENSOR / MONITORS INTACT & WORKING ALSO. D--T DID CONTACT ME & WANTED TO " UPGRADE " MY WHEELS 3 YRS. LATER ...... YHEY SAID THE ONES THEY SOLD ME WERE UNDER--RATED FOR MY CAR. OF COURSE THEY WANTED ANOTHER $ 1000+ EVEN WITH MY PRIOR COSTS AS A FULL CREDIT. I FIGURED, HEY !! IF THEY WERE GONNA FAIL, THEY WOULDA DONE IT BY NOW SO I DECIDED I'D PASS ...... & THAT WAS 3 YRS AGO. NO PROBLEMS THUS FAR ........

I have 2008 Honda Odyssey Touring. I just replaced PAX tires with regular EX wheels. I took preasure sencors from the PAX rims and put it back on EX wheels. They work excelent. The only thing, I had to buy new wheel nuts, because they're different. PAX wheels are twice heavier than EX wheels. Less weight better gas mileage. No more PAX wheels for me. Now I can choose what tires to buy and where to buy.
P.S. I bought my EX wheels in excelent condition from craiglist and much cheaper than at the dealership.

So you switched your PAX to EX wheels? You simply bought EX wheels and changed them? My dad has a 2006 Odyssey with PAX and he wants to get rid of them.
Please advise?

That's basically what you have to do. There's plenty of posts on here about that. Take a look.

Since the PAX rims are heavier, thicker, and sturdier, are they not more stable and cause less rattle from the auto? Will my Odyssey vibrate and rattle when I put on regular rims and tires?
