The headlights on the Acura RL are a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. At times I find myself driving blind. The road is completely in the dark. The headlights are not suited for this application. Its as if a dark curtain descends over the road and I find I have to "feel" my way along the road. Anyone else is this situation having a problem ? Otherwise I just love love this car.....just dont drive at night on dark country roads......

what year is your car? i have the 2006 acura rl with the active headlights, my only complaint on them is that they should be tilted slightly highere. sometimes, i feel as if they are aimed too low.

I feel exactly as you do. My dealer has told me several times that there is nothing wrong with the lights. Only last week they recommended that I look at installing some type of after market lighting system in the grill. No idea what they would cost.

I have the 2007. I only have this problem when I am on very dark windy up/down hill roads......very scary when you cannot see. I love the car and am very worried when I drive home at night.

Let me know if you get this installed and what the results are. I love the car otherwise and feel that this flaw makes it very dangerous to drive. I hope there is a recall to correct. I wanted this car for a long time and hate that Im scared to drive in the dark.

We are a family of Acuras. 3 out of 5 cars are Acuras. We love them, but recently my 2001 Acura TL's headlights all of a sudden went dim. So dim that cars were flashing me to let me know they were dim. Acura quoted $600 to replace both headlights. What does it take to cause a recall. May have to start purchasing Mercedes or BMWs from now on.

holy crap that is scary... i had no idea. my thoughts are... upgrade your fog lights in the mean time? i did an upgrade with a kit (you can get them at places like www.neverburnout.com ), but you could go with a place like hoens-usa.com just as easily.

2005 Acura RL Intermittent Headlight Problem. Headlights flicker when going over bumps but also one or the other of the other headlights goes completely dark while driving at night. Sometimes it is the left and sometimes it is the right headlight which goes dark while driving and for no apparent reason. I can “reset” the dimmed headlight by switching the headlights from “Auto” to “off” and then back to “Auto” again while driving.

I have voiced my complaint to my dealer twice and the service manager even drove my vehicle home. Of course, there was no failure while the car was in his possession.

As everyone knows, it is not always easy to tell that you are driving with only one headlight. And, as everyone knows, it is dangerous to drive with only one headlight.

Any clues?

I HAVE A 2006 RL AND FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS... LIKE I WANT TO USE THE HIGHBEAMS MORE OFTEN THAN I SHOULD. ACURA SAYS ITS NORMAL, PART OF THE AFS.

I just purchased a 2005 RL and my lights have been flickering as well. On one occation the right front headlight went out but came back on when I turned the light switch off and then on again. When I asked the Service Manager at my local Acura dealer they said that it was probably a computer "mis-read" and that it shouldn't be a problem in the future. So very satisfying. Do just wanted to throw in on this thread. If anyone finds "the answer" please post.

J Stanton,
I have a 2005 Acura Rl and had the same problem, your ballast must be changed to stop this problem, the headlight will not stop flickering. I wonder why Acura technicians tend to guess problems and solutions for this car and not actually check Acura Service Bulletin.

Christine Shey,
You can adjust your headlight aim level, look in your owners manual and you'll find how.

I'm with you. I have 2 issues with the 2007 RL headlights - they are pointed way too low and very noticable when driving on roads with steep declines. The other issue is the flickering of headlights when I hit a slight bump in the road. What can be done about this?

Is there truly a service bulletin on this issue?

My 2005 RL's headlights are far from adequate. I feel highly insecure on any roads that aren't well illuminated. How did this happen? How did a $50K plus flagship car, nine years in production, wind up with primitive lighting? My '96 RL had fine lights, offering great security on all roads.
Clueless Acura engineers. How will they treat the 2011 Acura RL that's in the works? Same lighting? That would remove me from Acura's family after almost twenty years. I won't risk my well being.

Christine: I believe that the problem goes beyond how the lights are aimed as mine have been adjusted. The lights are simply inadequate, regardless of where they're aimed.

I also have 05 RL and have exact same problem with the driver's side headlight. It goes off whenever and when I turn it off and back on again the light always come back on but it will go out again a moment later. I took it to the dealer it cost me over $1,400 with just that driver's side headlight issue. They said they replace some kind of a suspension on the AFS, headlight power supply and a bulb. You mention that you also have issue with both side. That sound scary, it's rediculus to spend another $1,400 that would make it $2,800 for headlights?... Other than that I love the car.
