transmission failure

I have an '05 MDX Tech with 120000KM. I bought it Certified Pre-owned in 08 at 80000KM and have an extended warranty till 130K. I am noticing 'revving' between 200-300 rmps while in D5 when the rpms are between 900 and 1400 and not at highway speeds along with a 'growling noise'. The Dealership (they get all my service for both of my Acuras) said that this was perfectly normal and is the transmission 'hunting' while under load and to let them know if the rpm revving range increase (anything above 500) And to drive it in D4 when in the city/heavy traffic if it bothers me. About 10K ago I was going about 30KM/hr and on an incline in traffic and the car started lurching. I gave it some gas and it seemed to 'snap out of it' when it downshifted. This is starting to happen more frequently but I can't reproduce it on demand for the dealership to diagnose. No warning lights and all the dealer did was update my software which did nothing. I have it noted in the service record at 110KM but am wondering if this is the dreaded transmission/torque converter issue that seems to be fairly common in the 01-03 MDX? If so I guess I'll just have to grab someone in the service dept for a test drive until it happens?

I have a court date tomorrow. I'm sueing Acura for this. They had a recall on the transmission and it also said if you paid money to have the tranmission replaced you can get reimbursed. They did not reimburse me so I'm taking them to court. Wish me luck guys. send me a message of advice if you have any. Thanks.

I am an Acura technician of 15 years. You people are crazy. The MDX trans has had some problems. However most MDX owners never experience any trans problems at all. How can you complain about a warranty that was extended to over 100k miles. How can you complain about paying a small portion of a trans replacement at 70k 80k 90k miles etc (well after the warrenty has expired). Nothing made by a human is perfect. Every car manufacturer has its problems. Every car has it bad points. Give it a rest, the MDX is a fantastic car. I would never own anything but a Honda. My MDX, 3.2 TL, CIVIC, and LEGEND are more reliable than 99.9% of the vehicles on the road (even with trans issues).

I had the torque converter replaced and software updated which has solved the problem. This was done under warranty and at no charge.

I have an 06 MDX with 65k. I'm experiencing the exact same problem (grinding/shaking from the rear of the vehicle in high gear and low rmp; it does not happen when driving in 4th gear). When I had recent service they change fluids and that lessened the sounds, but it still occurs. I plan to get this repaired before the 70k powertrain warranty expires. Not sure why the 06 vehicles have the longer warranty period, but I am glad they do.

I have a 2001 Acura MDX with 189,000 miles. I have had it serviced to Acura specs. Lately it has been starting to slip in all gears. What could this be? What is the best way to fix it?

I have a 2002 Acura MDX with 172,345 on it and it started vibrating very badly and then the check engine light came on. Had it checked and the code was the idle air control senser as I am writing this it is being repaired, but will this stop my vibration. It will only vibrate when i mash the gas and then let off.

I am the owner of a 2001 mdx and have been getting a bad hum and vibration coming from the transmission. Is this a precurser to what happened to you? I would definitly like more info on how to go about this recall. I that you for any of your help.

Dona and all, I just have had a transmission lock up at higher speed on the highway and almost lost my family, I also learned that there is a recall for that transmission on all MDX's build in 2001 and 2002.
The dealer says that it is only recall for inspection but in fact if as a result of inspection they will see some indicators on the gears they must replace the whole transmission.
I have more if you are interested.

I have to hand it to Acura Customer Service and my local Acura service dept.
They were responsive, polite, and accomodating. My case was escalated and reviewed, they engaged my local dealership and service manager. My argument was logical - I have done all recommended maintenance at the dealership, there is a known issue with the 2nd gear re heat build up and excessive wear, and a car of this quality and price should not have a major component fail at 87k mi.
In the end, Acura picked up 80% of the new transmission cost and the service dept kicked in another 10% so I only have to pick up 10% of the cost ($480). Now that is customer service and Acura has just retained a customer. Needless to say, I am not in the market for a new car, and when it comes time to trade in my Maxima, I am getting a TL.
Where did you go? I am in Chadds Ford and need to get my trnsmission replaced at 70K. The Dealership in West Chester has not been accomidating.

2004 Acura TL. Car is shaking/shuttering when going steady pace between 25-35 mph (and when very slightly accelerating in between these speeds). Took car into dealership this week and they advised, "No codes pulled. Checked Transmission fluid...burnt up. Recommend new transmission for $4100 plus tax". Took my car into another shop the next day to have a transmission flush done on it and was advised "Nothing is burnt up. You just had a transmission flush 10K ago and the fluid is FULL and barely dirty at all...we see no problem". I called the Acura dealership and made them refund me the $ I paid for the diagnostic that was non-conclusive. When I called back, they then suggested it COULD be the torque converter but do not really know for sure. Seems a bit shady to me to recommend someone pay $5K w/taxes on a new transmission when you are not SURE that is what is needed.

I have a 2000 MDX Salvage, I have 119K miles on it, just now it started with the slipping gears issue and the jerk on 2 and 3 gear. My issue is that the Dealer washes their hands the minute they see is a salvage. I took it to a Transmission Shop and they replaced it run good for 4 days, started doing the same thing, they said it was the computer the controls the transmission, Paid extra for computer repair and programing, tested ok for one day and started again with the same issue. Does anybody has any idea what should I do in this case or what shouldn't. thx.

I have a 2002 MDX with 61K miles. Engine Malfunction light came on 09-15-06 and I went to my dealer. They have ordered me a new transmission under warranty. Please note that I followed the required maintenance schedule for the transmission. In fact I had just had the 60K mile service done four weeks ago. Prior to the MIL light coming on I was experiencing gear slipping between 2nd and 3rd. The dealer told me that Acura was replacing all of these transmissions.

Hi, I have a 2002 MDX which needs it's transmission replaced. I called Acura and they said they only had a second gear slip problem that they have a recall on. I am worried about the locking up situation you had. Do you have any additional information that might help me? Thanks
