Given the terrible gas mileage of SUVs and the energy and global warming crisis caused by America's gas guzzling, should SUVs they be banned and how? Would gas prices go down if they did ban gas guzzlers? Would we be independent of mideast oil?

What?! People need these vehicles, and FREEDOM OF CHOICE also includes CARS!! Please, global warming "crisis", where have you been brainwashed kid? Gas prices are due to greedy gas companies whos profits are going higher than ever, just like prices are!! No country (exept maybe Norway) are oil dependent, I mean, USA is the biggest economy in the world, it will never be independent on ANY ressources!

If the sun comes up tomorrow, the US citizens will still like big and flashy. Get over it because the SUV is not going anywhere.

Let's drill the arctic refuge for energy independency. Let's ban Class 3 and above trucks while we're at it. That way all the imported goods can sit on the water for 4 weeks and then in steamy hot rail cars for another couple weeks.

Oh please! So the US is the cause of global warming? Erik, explain to me how the US is causing temperatures to go us solar system wide? Nasa has the figures. Erik, have you ever heard about coal fired plants in china? They don't have any of the US emission controls. And the marketplace is quite capable of pushing SUV's into oblivion. With gas hovering near $3 a gallon, no one is rushing out to buy SUV's and pickups like they were.

Exactly, USA is a leader in efficent appliances and products, its just that people have more stuff than the average people in other poorer countries. Appliances and cars are old and inefficient in MANY countries. Most of Asia has no laws on pollution, focus on that, NOT on trying to make our lives less comfortable and taking away our freedom!

I don't know if you are necessarily safer in your SUV than a smaller car. the new yorker had a fascinating article about SUVs last year. one of the myths is that SUVs are safer. they are manufactured to a truck's safety standard which are more lenient than a passenger car. also, a study (studies?) were cited that drivers of smaller cars got into fewer accidents as they drove more defensively.

I think you missed the point, is not about the gas price, it's about the amount of fuel suv consumes, it kills the environment, and they are a liability to other drivers, suv blinds other driver on lower cars with their headlight, blocks other driver's sight, and chances of survival in accidents in suv vs sedans are very low. They should pay higher taxes, fees and registration. I mean MUCH HIGHER FEES.

People do NOT need SUVs, 90% of every SUV driven in North America never goes off-roading. They just perform the exact same lengthy commute on paved city streets that regular cars, bikes, and city buses drive every day..
...And brain washed, maybe you should look into our society a little deeper, you my friend a long with most Americans are brain washed by this idea that our standard of life is sustainable and always will be.
I'm going to be laughing my *** off when the oil crisis hits in a decade or 2 and all you middle/upper class people are complaining why gas prices are so high, and blaming the government that you can't afford to drive your cars 20+ miles to work every day. Well you can thank our car dependent society that we've relied on for the past 70+yrs draining all of the crude oil the Earth contains.
And by the way, I will agree that gas companies are greedy, however USA pays some of the lowest prices of oil compared to many other developed countries, so you shouldn't be complaining. And gas prices have coincidentally raised over the past decade or 2 but so have the oil prices. For the record, Americans pay more $$ for a bottle of water than we do for oil. So shove that up your SUV's exhaust pipe and smoke it...

You're correct. Its not the vehicle that makes you safer, its the driver. I went from driving a chevy half ton 4x4 to a honda civic hybrid, and everyone was telling how unsafe the small car was. I didn't have a wreck in my half ton, and its the same in my civic. Just getting much better gas mileage.

To protect myself, I drive a 4,300 lb passenger car because of all the large SUV's on the road. My car gets lower gas mileage than a 3,000 lb car which I would be willing to drive if all other vehicles were about the same weight.

I've been driving my civic since 2009, still accident free.

There is no way SUVs can be nor ever will be banned.
But I do agree that drivers are the problem, not cars or trucks.

SUVs should be banned or not depends on some facts. SUVs are producing more pollution than other vehicles and they consume more fuel than others. Drivers drive their SUVs at fast speed in the town. It might cause accidents in the town. But speed lovers might not love this post. But safety is the priority of driving.

I agree with Mike.
Most people here are probably the dumbfounded patridiotic typical American liberal arts major.
If you retards don't understand the world, don't comment.
SUVs are needed yes, but when i see a plus size woman driving her suburban multiply that by millions of dumbfounded patridiots.
Learn science, facts are facts but not to the uneducated.
I bet most people in this thread can't even do simple algebra.

SUVs should be removed from the roads.......only if they are domestic! The ignition "death" switches are exposing a multitude of issues and problems from a botched recall system......Recalls save lives GM!!!!!
