Americans shall win form oriental Toyota junk status.

Toyota's quality was never that much better than anyone else's, the perception was there. As such, Toyota expended a huge amount of effort to ensure the perception remained, but it seems they weren't expending that care in product development, design, engineering, etc. I still recall the head shake moment when Toyota said they were going to cut parts costs appreciably while retaining quality. It just seems an odd statement. It was a "pick a percentage" attempt of management whereby someone wants a specific savings and, inevitably, something had to give. And it seems that was quality.

Having been so fully pushed off the pedestal Toyota now finds itself grinding it out in the corners with the rest of the automotive players and not liking it.

Ironically, consumers will end up the winners. Much as the arrival of Japanese imports in the 70s and 80s showed North Americans that cars could be reliable and parts could be built to last beyond the warranty now we see a renewed price war that Toyota must fight to ensure it retains market share otherwise it could follow GM's path to ruinous market share collapse and the losses that entails due to the huge infrastructure Toyota has at hand.

Failure??? Because of the incentives, there were so many buyers that I could hardly even get into the Toyota dealership the other day! This is the first time in years Toyota has ever lowered their damn prices!!

The other benefit of all this is that maybe, just maybe, the focus with cars might turn to styling, ergonomics, etc. if the media remains fixated on the truth that all cars today are highly reliable. Of course that means no one automaker will rule the roost the way GM did in the past, but ultimately that type of competition -- design and substance -- is a win for consumers, assuming the automakers keep quality numbers up as they've done.
