Michael, can you explain more of what happened in your situation? I'm considering buying a 2004 Hinda Civic Hybrid with 100k on it, but am now nervous about these battery issues.

Tom,
It is my understanding there was an extended warranty on the battery packs but I am not sure which year. Even though you have a new battery, you are still covered by the original warranty. Consider it a blessing perhaps, you have a new battery under warranty that may last a long time now as opposed to one that is 1/2 done its life.
No it won't - get the battery replaced then sell it. Have replaced it 2x. 1 just before 100k. Now that one nay have failed 6 mo later and Honda says sorry you gotta pay for new one we don't warranty the one(s) replace when your under 100k. May take them to court - such bullshit. Never a Hobda again !

The IMA Battery on the 2003 Civic Hybrid is/was a flawed product. My first battery failed at 42,000 miles ( at 7 years) and was replaced under warranty. The second battery has failed with less than 27,000 miles ( at 11 years) and the dealer says it will cost me $3,684 to replace it with a rebuilt battery with a 3 year, 36K warranty.
So far, Honda and I have spent more on batteries than I have spent on fuel for this car.

With a 3 year warranty on a $3,684 battery, I'm planning on $1,000 per year battery cost going forward. Obviously, this is not the economical car we thought it was. I paid a significant premium to get the Hybrid, but from what I can see, the conventional 2003 Civic is worth more today than my hybrid. OUCH!
I carefully documented my battery failures and appealed to American Honda for some cost sharing on the third battery. They said sorry but you're on your own, nothing, period. I was very surprised they dropped me so hard. We bought two new Hondas in 2003, but they'll be our last.
Expensive mistake buying the Civic Hybrid!!!!

This is going to bite Honda big time. I tell everyone I meed what a POS the civic hybrid is. Word of mouth is the best/worst recommendation there is.

Honda Civic Hybrid has weaker motor than other cars. That is why it does not give the mileage which is shown in advertisements.
