I have driven everything from a chevy small block to a 390 ford with many German, English and Japanese cars and I believe, without doubt, that the old Toyota 2-TC hemi type engine is the best and most reliable engine ever built. I owned three early to mid to late Corollas and I can tell you that you could NOT kill that engine, the big drawback was that the body would rust away from them.

This engine had one big advantage over some of the other great engines and it was called a timing chain and not belt.

1999 Chevrolet 3.1 V6 93000 miles still runs great quiet smooth Just keeping basic fluids change etc. A very tough engine. 3.1 OR 3.8 GM V6s both seem to run forever.

<quoted text>. I will second that GM is the number 1 auto manufacturer in the world. They will not build you a bad car. Period. Some better that others...but no bad!!! I have an avalanche with the 5.3 and it has over 200k on it and runs like the day we drove it home. Also let everyone remember pearl harbor, and buy.merica!!!!!!!
Lol!! Let's try to remember something a little more recent than pearl harbor, say maybe... a recession. And in said recession let's also remember which domestic auto manufactures needed government bail-outs. Ignorant misplaced pride never pays. I mean, to be fair, I personally prefer German made autos, but I would never be so bold as to claim their superiority. Their build precision is unmatched, and WHEN they're running their performance is too. But they can break down quite consistently, and when they do it is dead expensive to repair them. So quantity goes to the Americans, but quality is still with the Japanese.

Mercedes Benz with OM617 (1974-85)engine is considered to be one of the most reliable engines ever produced! Around 100.000.000 miles. Needs every 250k change timing chain!
Many laboratories using Mercedes engine 617 for experiment! Toyota long time ago purchased an engine from Mercedes to study from what he is reliable.

I cannot believe in 172 post nobody mention the Nissan KA24E and KA24DE that powered many a Nissan pick up around the world and suffered heaps of abuse and never complained. There are folks building reliable KA24DE's w/ 400 horsepower on stock internals.

Far and few between though. Stock internals on average can only handle 250-310ish reliably. SRs were a little better there, and higher revving.
