I believe, the best motor, for longevity, is the stovebolt, straight six by Chevy ! I have many old cars, and trucks, of many makes, and models, even the /6 mopar can't beat it, and I have four ! The stovebolt, straight six, could set for decades, as long as water didn't get inside, and still be drivable ! V8's won't do that usually. I own three stovebolts, 46, 49, and 59, and they just wont let you down, and super easy to fix ! My /6's, 65,66,66, and 67, are real diehards, with a lot of power for their size, but won't hold a candle to the chevy's !!! I can't count the vehicles I've bought through the decades, and most even sitting in fields, with a little cleaning, fresh electric, would almost always start, and drive, as long as it didnt get taken apart, and left to get water in. I used to buy, and sell classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles, so this is from experience !

How about the 4.6 Liter v8 in my 94 crown Victoria. Over 200k with a small oil leak(ran it low 3 times) fires up right away every time even had it set for 6 months without starting it and drove it 40 miles. You can't kill these things.

ford inline 6 300 best engine by far ever made bullet proof the only reason ford stoped prodution of it in 1996 was because it never broke down so they never sold parts for them

3406 CAT. Only thing that comes close are Detroits
If your talking about car/truck engines the 6.9/7.3 idi's in 83-94 ford trucks are bulletproof
300 i6 is probably the winner for a gas engine

If anyone talks about something other than Toyota, it just shows what they know. Nothing.

I hear you on the 225 slant six they also made a 198 slant six if I remember right. They had a very distinctive sound on the starter but like you said quiet after that. I had a Duster and also a Valiant. They just kept running until I decided to go with a different color to be honest I should have kept both of them.

i have a 1990 ford f150 with the 300I6 and a granny low 4spd. i got the truck with 320k miles from my grandpa and he changed the oil every 2500 miles and took good care of it. he pulled a feed trailer every day with that thing and i pull a trailer at least 4 days a week and it has over 390k miles and doesnt burn a drop of oil. the only thing i have had to replace is the rear main seal the water pump and the valve cover seal and the u joints. i think hands down the 300I6 is the best motor ever made. it runs forever and can almost pull anything. if i cant pull it in high range i just put it in low and try and get the tires to hook up. this motor is just an absolute monster.
Anyone who says they have had reliablity experiences with Ford is in the minority. I will never buy a Ford vehicle. Too many horror stories . Ive got a a pontiac vibe with a toyota 1.8 with over 200,000 miles and it starts like new all day .

I wont buy anything but toyota products. I have a Vibe, not the manliest car, yet practical and reliable, with a toyota 1.8 with over 200,000 miles on the clock. I will never buy a Ford or Chrysler product ever. They make crap cars that have "cool" appeal but thats it. Not a big fan of rust, transmission, and anyone problems.

I think the Germans and Italians makes the most reliable engines.
I'll go with BMW S54 and an honorable mention Alfa Romeo V6 24V.
