I noticed your article about sending cigars to the
troops overseas. I am a veteran of WW II, 25th
Inf. Div, on Luzon and Japan occupation. It is
amazing how little many people know about how dangerous smoking cigars and cigarettes is to the
person smoking, and to other people from the second hand smoke. Do a google search on 'smoking cigars diabetes' and other kinds of illness related to smoking. No one needs to have that kind of risk to their lives, literally. I am a
victim of cigar smokers in my workplace 20 some
years ago, such that I now am a person with
respiratory disabilities, hypersensitive to tobacco smoke. Do a google search on 'SAFE stories' and my name.

So you consider sending cigars to the troops as some kind of favor??? Why not send them bottles full of all the poisons in cigar smoke in liquid form, including arsenic, cyanide, cadmium (battery acid, alkaline (3000 times the content of a cigarette!), nicotine (poison... insecticide), acetone, formaldehyde, polonium 210, etc... and let them drink it instead? Much faster, more humane way to die... and it won't kill all their poor friends and innocent bystanders who would choose not to poison themselves or be subjected to pulmonary and cardiovascular rape!

As a victim of secondhand smoke who has asthma and permanent heart damage from working in a smoke filled work environment, I find it inconceivable that handing out cigars would be considered anything other than the worst form of cruelty and abuse imaginable, not only for the person smoking,(of which over 50% will DIE from this product which kills when used as intended!) but also for everyone who is subjected to the smoke.

Why not sell them back to the murdering tobacco pushers and use the money to pay for some of the health costs of the millions of smokers who are already dying from their poisonous products! You can start with Patrick Swayze. It's too late for Dana Reeve, unfortunately, who never smoked a cigarette in her life, but died of lung cancer due to working in smoke-filled night clubs for 20 years!

ALL cigars should be incinerated!!! If it was any other product which caused the death of 500,000 Americans each year, they would be ILLEGAL! Amazing what trillions of dollars can do...

If there is still any doubt, read the Surgeon General Report. "NO safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke"....

Our soldiers are already in harms way, we should not be trying to kill them too. Look what the free cigarettes did for the soldiers of WWII, it addicted them and half of those long time smokers died from their addiction.

It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to rile some pople whenever smoking is mentioned, and to read their knee-jerk reactions.

Sure there are trace elements of harmful chemicals in smoke. There are also many of those same chemicals in tap water. Should we force anyone who willingly drinks tap water to also drink a bottle of arsenic? Benzene is in coffee....why not force all coffee drinkers to chug a bottle of benzene?

Cruelty and abuse to hand out free cigars? No one is forcing them to ACCEPT them or to smoke them once they have them in their possession.

Strange how the one person in favor of cigars for the troops is the only one who might be directly affected by this proposal.

While it may not be Politically Correct, I think Sheriff Bouchard is doing the right thing. Some of our soldiers in Iraq or Afganistan would probably appreciate a cigar given the hardships they face on a daily basis.
Sheriff Bouchard should be praised for his thoughtfulness.

Hello, I am a US soldier stationed in Iraq. I was your blog regarding cigars for soldiers and would like to say for all of us fellow cigar smokers " We would love a good Cigar". Most of the cigars we get here in country are over priced and most of the time they are stored incorrectly and are dry. We have found several on-line places to purchase cigars but with a healthy shipping price. If you would like to send Cigars I will be glad to make sure that the the soldiers stationed here with me receive your cigars. My e-mail address is [email protected] l. Please contact me with this e-mail for shipping information.
May those who take the challenge to protect and serve do it with pride and dignity.

I am stationed in Iraq now.I would agree that a nice cigar is awesome to have every once in a while. We can get some descent cubans here if we look around, but like it was mentioned above-they are usually dry and stored incorrectly. Anyone who would like to send cigars to us working our @$$es off in the scorching heat (all while trying to shake off the stress) is a good friend in my eyes. Whats gonna kill us quicker, some nicotine, or an EFP and an ambush?

Me and the guys over here have been looking for organizations to send cigars to soldiers, and cant seem to find where to sign our unit up...You people can smoke or not smoke if you want. Its a personal choice to do so if you want. I myself choose to for my own reasons. We do what we do for you people and dont expect any trash back from you. We would greatly appreciate getting cigars over here!

I get sick of people always deciding what is best for others. Just maybe; you should let the soldiers decide what they would like to have to help them through a tough time. They are the ones fighting for the freedom of choice...or maybe you bleeding hearts would like to grab a rifle and stand a post!
