How would a winch work on my truck?

i think a winch would be nice to have, since i have a 2wd ram 1500 and like to go through mud. I am just curious about how it works.
First, i noticed all of them had to be installed. Is there a winch that you could carry in the back of the truck bed or in the cab that would have two hooks, one to attack to your truck and one to loop around an anchor?
So sort of like the actual motor was in the middle of two cables.
Second, if you are stuck and need a little extra force to get out, would something like 3000 or 4000 pounds be enough?
oh and to be clear, i DO NOT want one installed/welded onto the truck, i would have a trailer hitch i could attach a hook to and maybe another place thats it.
