Another interesting article by The Economist.
This talks about the "Fiscal Cliff" and the hypocracy of politicions.
The last three paragraphs are the most compelling.

Comment on the first article – I don’t think it’s a well written piece and the author is liberal. Trent Lott could drive a go-cart if it makes him happy.

Second – What direction do you want to go? I’ll give a short answer and follow with another thought. Short answer is this, we’re in deep trouble and I think we’re in for a rough ride the next few years.

America must retain its ability to embrace open markets, rule of law and limited government regulation. We have to swing away from and slash government spending. Our current forecast points to increased social spending, increased government control, higher taxes on industry, and increased regulations. We are becoming less of a free society and falling into a tyranny, see government mandates forcing condoms, morning after pills and birth control pills on religious institutions as one example.

America’s electorate has chosen the path for the next several years. The real question is can we sustain this? I don’t know. What does the future hold? Could America split? I seem to think that latter suggestion is not as far off as some would imagine.

I found those articles interesting, that's all.
Didn't say I agreed with them---or not.
I will say this much---the fundamental problem in the US is that you tax like a small country and spend like a big country.
And you're not alone in that regard!
Im optomistic though the US will find ways to get things fixed.
Your comments resonate.

I hope you’re right about finding a way to get it fixed. One scenario I can see is this, just before the “fiscal cliff” comes along, the train wreck that is DC will successfully find a way to deflect the cliff by postponing the inevitable which is kicking the can down the road another few years.“Oh to hell with the Budget Control Act, we must take care of the people.”

Cringe
