However the Supreme Court rules after its landmark hearings on same-sex marriage, the issue seems certain to divide Americans and states for many years to come.

Realistically we can get about 20 states. After that it will take a new SCOTUS case to overturn the rest of the bans.

As long as we get the federal rights & benefits, I can wait for the rest of the states to come along.

In a growing number of places that is not true. Sucks for you to be on the wrong side of history! I'm sure the KKK can give you pointers on how to handle your loss.

I agree with this article. "Gay marriage" will be like abortion. Forty years after Roe V. Wade it is still a contentious subject. Many folks who were at one time on the supportive side of abortion are now on the the opposition side, including the guy who developed the marketing campaign for getting abortion legalized. I believe that many who now support "gay marriage" will have a different take on it down the road. As long as there good and evil, right wing and left wing, conservatives and progressives, Christians and non-Christians, abortion will never be settled. Neither will there once and for all be a brand-new definition of marriage. What changed a lot of minds on abortion was the reality of actual abortions and the aftermath for women who have had them. Sometimes I think the best defeat for "gay marriage" will be to push it through and then let the new reality play out in society. The law of unintended consequences will without a doubt produce results that a lot of current day supporters are not expecting. When they happen, it will be a wake-up call.

FaFoxy, except for your two men and two women example, all of the rest are still a man and a woman, just as biracial marriages are. Despite some of those examples being odious to a lot of folks, they still do not change the actual definition of marriage - a union of a man and a woman. Only "gay marriage" changes that definition. And, of course, the polyamory "marriages" that are sure to be next because once the definition is changed, anything is possible.

Not true. As far as cousins are concerned, 2 male, or 2 female, first cousins, or cousins of any degree for that matter (2nd cousins, first cousins once removed, etc.) could get married in New York and many other states. Furthermore, an uncle and a nephew could marry as well as an aunt and a niece. Unusual ? Yes. Illegal ? No.

Futhermore, when people who are blood relatives do marry, i.e. cousins, aunts, nephews, nieces, uncles, etc., who is going to know when they issue the marriage license ? Unless teh parties tell them ? And many states, such as New York, do not require a blood test of any sort, nor anything else. You just pay a fee and get teh license.

your made up scenario was proven wrong before you were told to parrot it...

in the states and countries that have had SSM for some time now, it has been a settled issue. and will remain so.

Thats what liberals want.
The closer they keep the blood lines, the more apt they are to produce low information voters, the core of their voter base.

But those combinations involve changing the definition of marriage, which I concede has been done already in some states.

Nobody told me to "parrot" anything. Settled in the law, perhaps. So is abortion. But I suspect that, like abortion, it is not settled culturally.
