Nationwide Marriage Equality Protest Listing

Full story: queersunited.blogspot.com

In the wake of marriage equality being defeated in Maine, and the one year anniversary of the passage of proposition 8, activists are holding protests throughout the country to express their outrage that the majority has the right to deny civil rights to a minority population.

At least we are now protected under the hate crime law. Our rights may NEVER be won by popular vote. The rights of blacks and women never were to my knowledge. It's going to have to be won through the courts.

Think of all those millions of dollars that those "moral" organization could have put to good use by buying a hospital wing or food for low-income families. All that money WASTED on hatred. All their hard earned money spent proves their HATE.

This is the reason that the U.S. Government did not allow the public to vote on interracial marriage. If they had, a vast majority of states, specifically those in the South, would have made it illegal. You do not vote on a person's rights, it's that simple.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of people who voted against marriage equality in Maine did so based on the untruths of the ads and did not bother to go to Factcheck.org , etc to vet them out. So sad.

What can we do in the meantime? I'm going to the protest at Union Square today at 5:30pm.

In an article in The Hill, which explains how some Democrats don't want to take up "controversial issues, we learn that the number two Democrat in the Senate, Dick Durbin (D-IL), is now saying they may not take up the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell next year.

So the compassionate ads showing loving families don't work. Several issues need to be addressed head on in the next fight.
1. Kids & School. So what if they learn about Gay Marriage. Kids need an education, cause ignorance isn't bliss. What harm is that going to do, really.
2. Religious Rights. No church is going to loose rights to discuss their views on sin. Although, there certainly should be changes in the tax law for church who speak on political issues.
These issues have to be confronted in our next ads.

Uh, you guys.

It's probably time to start ramming home that *these families and their children*-- specifically -- are damaged by laws and votes which *strip them of equality*.

That's probably pretty important.

In the meantime, the protests are great, absolutely. And the sudden shift toward a (seeming) mass realization that this *MUST* be accomplished through legislatures and courts seems a good thing, too.

The anti-gay of today are the racists of yesterday.(Confront them with it. They get HY-STER-I-CAL and deny, deny, deny.) They won't give *any* minority rights *for reasons which are nonsense, lies and knowing misstatement*.

Another suggestion? Start looking into class action lawsuits *where what they say is a PROVABLE lie or where it is an opinion they represent as fact and which they CANNOT prove*. Lawsuits for slander, libel and/or defamation of character. Never been done and there's a first time for everything,*trrrrust* me on this.

On the contrary, the ERA was defeated by a MINORITY of a popular vote. The ERA required ratification by three-fourths of the states, and a minority of states rejected the amendment.

Had the ERA been ratified, same-sex "marriage" would be legal nationwide.

Basically, I agree with you. What I don't understand is why gay organizations don't start a movement for gays not paying taxes. If we don't have full equality---which is clearly the case---then we should not have to pay the same rates as those who do get the privileges of the majority. Maybe a movement to refuse paying taxes would get serious attention, esp., in economic times like these.

Forget the Pope. He's small potatos. Evangelical/Fundamentalist kristyans account for 25% of the religious population in the U.S. and the next biggest religious faction is the Southern Baptist Convention which agrees entirely with the E/F's. They raise massive amounts of money using scare tactics. They all vote all the time. As a result they took over the Republican party and are now going around the country throwing out anyone who is not socially intollerant. Although head counters now say that self-identified Republicans only account for 20% of the population they still win elections. This is mostly accomplished by voting. They all vote, all the time and no other popultion bothers. In my own city so few people showed up to vote in the Democratic primary this fall it was announced on the news that 20% of the registered voters were making the choices for the other 80%. There's that magic number again.

If every GLBT person in the country only voted for politicians who support our civil rights, if we dragged along just one other friend or relative who would vote likewise we would win.

And if we follow his lead, we'll wind up in court. No paying my taxes is not a road I want to go down. To many legal ways to fight that won't put my home and property in jeporady.

I totally agree. If I was a Senator or Representative I could get away with not paying my taxes but just a regular person like you and me?

And at the risk of pointing out the obvy, it's not only LGBT persons who support equality and tolerance. I'm none of the above, and I absolutely support it.

Maybe Gays should refuse to pay taxes... since they are second class citizens but on average make more money and are better educated then their hetero married neighbors

Daily Horoscope for January 4

Pisces

Family, friends and in-laws are all hard to please. It is better to please yourself for once, dear Pisces, than to bang your head against a wall. You need to relax and get in touch with your own feelings. Do not hesitate to speak up for someone you care about. Someone may try to curtail your freedom. Set them straight and do not give in.
